Considering ED doesn't have a monthly subscription, I'd say you're looking at it the entirely wrong way.

They don't owe you content, therefore you're getting quite a good deal with them.

CCP on the other hand, charges a monthly subscription and has barely any content in their updates to speak of.


At the end of the year, how much will you have paid to CCP for that lack of content you've been receiving? Hmmmm...


CCP charge a monthly subscription for access to the servers to play the game. The updates are free. While we're comparing content though, I do laugh a little when someone makes like EVE has less than Elite in any way shape or form.


In terms of content totality, its hard to claim that.

In terms of content per update, it isn't..

And if you think CCP is retaining customers based on server access, you are mistaken. They might be charging for that on paper, but it's not what's being sold. If EVE never received another update again you would see player numbers plummet.

Similar to how the recent updates now have no content that actually matters to anyone, and as a result those numbers have gone down. Funny how that works, eh?

The older game has more content. I imagine if Elite is still about when it get to the age EVE is now it will have more content. EVE has had a lot of times when it's fallen back on content delivery which has hurt it in the long term. For example, EVE has pushed for so long on "look how many players we have in one fight" first running into lag, then compensating with tidi, then encountering more lag, trying to break out services and then finally changing mechanics to reduce the number of players in a fight. A lot of time has been wasted pushing for a goal which they've now done a 180 on.

Elite by the way also gives server access.

At least the TrainSim guys have some kind of excuse and historical reasoning behind their business model. They're going for the model train market where, at the extreme end, a single engine can cost almost as much as all that DLC. Sure, we get into the whole “hand-crafted super-detailed working micro-machinery vs. infinitely reproducible digital download” at that point, but they know their market and they price their stuff accordingly.

Similarly, on other parts of the sim spectrum, we have stuff like this for the flight fanatics and these guys for the driver nuts — each happy to take your $5,000 for a fully kitted-out set. Simulation accessories has always been a funny business. P

Agreed; although my point was more about the Train Sim guys having now also taken over the Steam distribution of FSX. And that ain't right.

Somewhat guilty as charged though: never shelled out for a yoke but have always had a decent HOTAS, currently a Saitek X-55 which I can also use for, you guessed it, E:D. Also have a set of rudder pedals lying around somewhere(tm). Didn't use those for very long though as I just never could get them to work realistically enough for my liking. And yes, I do know what rudders are supposed to feel like.

Oh, damn. I didn't even realise that. Shocked

Then again, MSFS, or at least the MSFS-addon developers, have a long and proud tradition of making people pay through the nose for small additions. So no real change there… Lol

...and, five minutes later, booted up Frontier: First Encounters. Much better game.

Compared to the sub money i spent on EVE in the last 12 years, 130 quid seems like a good deal.

If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all...

I find it funny to a degree...

Elite is a single player game that happens to have other people stumbling through your business on occasion.

EVE is a multiplayer game that most people happen to play solo 99% of the time. Even social agreements are generally just an excuse to get people to mind their own damn business.

If there is one thing EVE does better (and probably always will) it's lore. And that isn't even reflected in the game itself very well most of the time. Oh, How I wish that EVE would do the stuff that ED and SC are doing.... like they were supposed to.

Nope, bought the main game beta without the expansion pass as I wasn't sure about it then. Will be buying the pass close to the expansion release or sometime before then if they do any deals with it.

Edit: Tell a lie, they had a deal on now it turns out, so yes.

I don't regret any money I've spent on EvE. Really EvE is fairly cheap entertainment.
A month of EvE is cheaper than going to one movie.
A month of EvE is much cheaper than dinner and drinks.

Just for the money I've spent on divorce lawyers alone, I could sub all of you in this thread and all your alts for a long time. Smile

No instead you're paying 10 pounds a month per account but let's just forget it because its divided into tiny pieces so surely it magically makes the total sum per year less important.

Elite isn't actually charging for a DLC, its charging for a year worth of updates at 3,33 pounds a month. Meanwhile EVE charges us triple that amount.

Elite has its flaws, but at least they are trying to make the experience enjoyable and FUN.

Hell, if you look at the way powerplay works, its way better than the Aegis Sov. And yes, it could totally be transposed to EVE.

I'm late, but I haven't paid for eve in over two years. It's really awesome they give you the ability to do that here.

ED is a half complete beta that got sold as a full product. I was very pissed when I realized that.

I'll not be spending any more on ED. Which sucks, because at its core, the gameplay is awesome.

It just feels half baked. From the ships to the weapons to the market to the missions. All seem half baked

What's fun for you might not be fun for someone else.

Not played ED myself and don't intend to.

Cheaper games are usually subsidised with an in-game shop, players can spend far more in those shops than they would normally on a subscription.
