Crane: Why bother with Industrial skill bonus?

I think I'm missing something when it comes to some Tech 2 ship bonuses. I'll use the crane as an example, but I think one can see this in other places.

According to my page here in EveMon, The Crane grants a bonus 5% to max velocity and cargo capacity per skill level of Caldari Industrial. But.... the ship _requires_ Caldari Industrial V in the first place.

So why bother having Caldari Industrial bonuses for the ship in the first place? Why doesn't CCP just set the base stats for the crane to be 25% higher for max velocity and cargo capacity?

What am I not understanding?

One sees this in every T2 ship. There used to be a niche case where you could fly a CS with BC 4; I don't recall whether that's still applicable and am too lazy to check.

It's legacy. It isn't doing any harm. It leaves open the possibility of lowering the requirement to fly a T2 ship to something lower than 5 on the base hull in the future. But for now, you're right: it has little practical meaning.

Me thinks Zhilia Mann is onto the basics of this.
CCP keeps them this way even with all the rebalance work that is going on so there must be some deep down in the code reason for it. I suggest that you simply ignore it like the rest of us and just move on to the next thing.

It is redundant information, but 'information' is the key point.
It's telling you that the bonus you acquired has been passed along.
You might not remember what the T1 bonus was, and it saves looking back for that.

Plus you cannot bake in most module bonuses to base stats, for example rate of fire on missile launchers are not part of the hull attributes.

It a way to show that T2 ships have mroe bonuses than T1 ships, by keeping a bonus for T1 skill they have +1(or more) bonuses than the T1 counterpart

Makes sense if those are bonuses to mods. When they aren't, that information is largely meaningless. I mean, so what it's it's 4000 m3 base with 25% bonus or 5000 m3 base? You don't need to look at T1 bonuses for anything, you can go and check stat value.

Besides, T1 bonuses aren't always translated onto T2 ships.

Just think of it as your reward for skilling into a Crane (or any T2 for that matter). It's just letting you know, "Hey. You trained Indy 5, this is what you get for that on top of your super sweet Crane."

When CCP re-worked the HIC lineup a while back, they took the previous +4% resist bonus for the racial cruiser skill and lumped the whole thing into a +20% resist role bonus instead. This freed them up to give them more combat-oriented bonuses. Also, if memory serves, for a long time the Assault Frigate lineup only had one bonus listed for the racial frigate skill with the other bonuses being built into the hull.

While these examples don't really provide any insight into why CCP does it that way, it at least shows that they have some flexibility not to if they choose.

And I agree with your advice. There are far more interesting things in EvE. Blink
