One of the main basic differences that I would like to point out that seperates eve from other MMOs is that many other MMOs base their PvP around highly structured, highly balanced PvP. In PvP where excessive amounts of time and effort are spent making sure everything is as close to even as possible, often little differences in "gear" can make a big difference.

In Eve there is no such thing as a fair fight. There is no even up PvP. A two week old character in a frigate can blow up a 10 year old player in a Battleship. You and 3 of your friends can engage a couple of other players only to find out that they have 15 buddies 1 jump away. Your skill points, expensive ships and expensive modules mean little compared to good tactics, intel and game knowledge.

You are all so helpful thanks!

Does anyone have any advice for some frigate fits that will be helpful to learn with? I am training this Gallente now but I am thinking of just buying a character that can fly basic stuff. That brings up another point.

Any tips for buying a character?

I'd advise against buying a character until after you have a better grasp on what the basics actually are. There's a lot to learn by just training your new character in as many skills as you can afford just to see what they can do, go out and do as much as you can to see what you like.

Check out the youtube channel EVE is Easy for low sp skill and ship fit ideas. He has several videos dedicated to pvp with characters less than 30 days old.

IIRC: the RvB forums have some extensive basic fits.

but here's one of my favourites:

Atron

Mids: MWD, Point or Scram, Web.
Lows: Damage Control, Small Ancillary Armour Repper, Magnetic Field Stabiliser (replace with a resistance module if you want some more tank).
Rigs: 3x Small Transverse Bulkhead I

Highs: your choice, blasters or rails. I've been having fun with 75mm railguns lately on this hull. Carry some Caldari Navy Antimatter S and Caldari Navy Uranium S ammo.

I'd suggest: Wait.

Patience is a virtue in this game. Give it another six months or so to get a feel for what you're doing, then consider it. If you buy a whiz bang, all skills at V 1337 peeveepee character now, you'll be tempted to start bling fitting expensive hulls and biting off far more than you can chew, which will then lead to expensive and embarrassing lossmails and huge dents in your wallet.

I'm fond of the incursis myself.

And I'll echo the sentiment about buying a character.

There's a fair bit of player skill and knowledge needed to succeed in eve and buying a character might interfere with that I.e. the people you interact with may treat you differently than they would an obvious nubie.

Hold your horses there, Cochise. Buying a character your first month will only result in flaming wreckage. Even as a vet coming back from a short vacation, one simply does not walk into mordor without taking some time to re-orientate with the game. For someone that has yet to really get their hands dirty at all, results are disastrous.

At least get your frig experience, or maybe destroyers (T1's T3D's etc). Frigs train fast (though bombers can take time), and you can have a lot of fun and good game exp training a couple T2 frigs. AF frigs are one of my favorites in the game, they are pretty much mini-cruisers with a whole lot of speed-tank. Or put some time into T1 cruisers, a lot of experience there too. I'd give it 4-6 months, then you'll have a better understanding of the game to start looking at the character bazaar... which can take months of waiting to find what you want, and a whole lot of money to get it. Best not blow it.

I'm in it for the money

Please allow me to echo a sentiment of yours from earlier:

Hmmmm yeah I like the attitude but you aren't going to lose a week, a Month or a years worth of work in an instant of complacency in dota.

Your losses here will be felt in the time and effort spent and believe me you will feel it.

It's part of the charm of the place in my mind but it can get to you from time to time.

I couldn't agree more.

It often only takes one misclick for disaster to befall you.

I've found myself sitting on a Titan, waiting for the tackler to light the cyno when the Titan pilot pipes up with: Oops, I forgot to fit the Bridge......

The concept of "Loss" in EVE is on a level to be found in no other game.

Personally I'd recommend against buying a character, simply on the grounds of I like creating and building my own characters in games, and I think that's a huge part of the experience in EVE. Azda has her own story attached to her, lot's of fun watching her come up from humble beginnings, and continue on up, not only SP wise I might add. It really does feel good to 'grow into your own' so to speak. Azda has a way to go SP wise, but my fun isn't dependent on being there ASAP.

I'm biased, but them's my 2c.

Grrr.

Forgot my login and came back to some great replies! I think I may hold off on the character buying for now, at least for 1-2 months and make sure I actually want to play.

Working on getting a training plan together now and going to get into RvB

Bought a couple plex to keep my account going and to have some to buy ships with. With as cheap as Frigate Fits look like I should be able to last awhile on 1 plex worth of isk.

This is very true. Cara began as fresh alt to try a bit of PVP. I figured I'd just train her for a month or two and do some frig PVP in RVB while doing other stuff with my "main".

By the end of the first month I was so attached that I moved her to her own account and kept on training. Now she has a long history and her own identity - many more people know her than any of my other characters and I still use her the most.

The Atron fit a few posts up is very solid and would be a good place to start. If you're headed to Faction Warfare space I would switch out the MWD for an afterburner for better range control (most of the fighting there happens in scram range because of the way FW complexes dump you right on top of the beacon). It's a very flexible ship, so experiment with the fitting and see what works for you in different situations.

If you learn to fly frigates well you can always find a way to entertain yourself in EVE. Although I can fly almost all the subcap ships I still fly Atrons quite regularly because the cheaper you fly the more likely you are to get fun challenging fights. Frigate fights are usually short and brutal, but learning to handle the split-second decision making required for them will make you a better pilot and the larger/longer fights in bigger hulls will seem easy in comparison by the time you are ready for them.

Alright guys, a quick update. I bought a plex to sell for isk, then found out that I redeemed it in the wrong station. After freaking out for a minute I got some help from a couple nice pilots.

Joined RvB and logging on today to get ships bought and shipped to my new home.
