Has the Rorqual become mostly useless now?

It seems to me that, with the recent change in Jump Clone creation, the Rorqual has lost its last real reason to exist in Low Sec and a large chunk of Null.

Ores can be compressed in Towers, and now JCs can be created damn near anywhere without regards to standings.

The Orca, while providing slightly lower overall boosts, is considerably less expensive, so with both the Compression and Clone Vat abilities rendered mostly moot, what use is there for this once venerable Industrial behemoth?

Does CCP have any plans to allow new, useful augmentations to the ship that could return it to a prominent role in low/null industry, or is it destined for the bin?

Idle curiosity......

Slightly lower boosts? You must have a different definition of slightly than I do. The only people in null who use and Orca are those who don't have a Rorqual capable pilot yet.

"Become useless"? I don't recall a time where it could actually be considered 'useful'!

The only purpose a Rorqual has ever had is providing superior mining boosts from a POS.

Compression was never a useful mechanic from Rorqual because at the time when you couldn't compress at a POS module, there were better alternatives to compression (eg. building 450mm rail guns).

Rorqual clone vats were used by exactly nobody, ever.

The Rorqual hasn't become useless, it is and always has been useless: nothing to this regard has changed.

As for it ever becoming useful - Soon(TM)

The jump clone creation thing isn't really “a change” — it's a bug, and it may be fixed at any point.

A Rorqual provides about a 17% advantage over using an Orca. That's a pretty substantial step up. It still boosts as well as it ever has.

Granted, that's basically all it can do now that something else can't do better/easier/cheaper/safer. But if you look back, Rorquals have never been prominently used as anything other than a shiny POS module.

Rorquals need an overhaul, desperately, but not because their role is gone. Rather, Rorqual pilots need something valuable to do beyond loading up heavy water every 3 hours or so then going afk.

Ummmm, no, pretty certain the devs have said it will stay, due to popular feedback.

It's not actually very hard — you just have to be willing to provide supporting information when asked for it. That's where most people instead opt to flip out, and go on irrational berserker rants instead, inevitably proving themselves wrong in the process. Blink

the rorqual's purpose wasn't meant to be creating jump clones, that was just a handy thing it COULD do.

And it provides SIGNIFICANTLY more boosts than an orca. Sure its more expensive, but the higher the functionality of something the higher the price.

A Titan deals less DPS (overall) than a supercarrier, has about the same tank, but it can bridge and DD, yet its 4x the price. You don't see people complaining about that.

High end stuff is expensive, if you have to worry or complain about the price, you shouldn't be flying it.

Rorquals are pretty much just meant to sit in POSes anyway. If you lose one youre doing something wrong

They will staple a few turrets to it and make it a battle platform, so you could get inside one of those turrets and destroy pirates infinitely advancing towards your sorry ass. But it will be in completely other game called Gunjack. In EVE you will just click a turret and it will shoot, without breaking immersion of clicking stuff in space..

At the first serious hint of rorquals being allowed into highsec, the New Order will deem them all to be unlawful and they'll die in large numbers to stupid and / or lazy people. We may even use a fleet of mining barges or something equally hilarious to kill some of them. I say open the floodgates.

Anyone remember when the rabble believed that the Rorqual was too powerful and Battle Rorqual fleets would blot out the sun after the jump nerf?

I seem to remember that being a thing.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

Orca: 69.97% effective ore yield bonus
Rorqual: 98.92% effective ore yield bonus .... or 41.37% more than an Orca

Max boost orca vs max boost rorqual (follow-up)
