Upgrade to a mining barge?

I've very recently started playing eve and I'm having a fair old time mining small asteroids in my venture. I feel that I would be happiest if I moved out into industry once I've trained my mining skill a bit, so I could process and make valuable items to sell.

I read the (probably outdated) article on the eve wiki that said I should be looking to build myself a mining barge once I've trained the skills to use it. However to my horror I found that the average price for a mining barge blueprint was 2 billion ISK!

2 billion?? I'm never going to get that kind of cash together with my venture. Should I just grind the 23 million to buy it new? that seems a little anti-climactic to me as I was kind of looking forward to building it myself Sad

I guess I'm just looking for a little advice on what I should be focusing on if I want to make money from mining/industry, I feel I'm missing something about the way it all works What?

Cheers.

There are BPOs and BPCs. Blue print originals ( BPOs ) have unlimited runs and are usually very expensive. Blue print copies ( BPCs )have limited runs but are much cheaper.

Check contracts and see if there is a 1 run blue print copy for the barge you want to build that is in the price range that you desire.

The longer version is that there is a lot more to mining and industry than you can learn from a couple paragraphs on the forums.

The industry side of Eve is very deep and all of it is based in the market which is even deeper. It will take you a long time to learn all the ins and outs but a good place to start is small. So either buy a cheap BPO like for ammo or a frigate or something cheap and then learn how to research it and then learn how to manufacture from both originals and BPCs. Or just go into contracts in game and buy a BPC or two of something that you will use. However you do it, jump in with both feet and take your lumps and come out more experienced like the rest of us.

Or find something that makes you more isk than mining and just buy what you need off the market and don't worry about how it's made. At the end of the day it's a game and you need to focus on whats most fun for you which no one else can tell you.

I have quite a few BPCs laying around, will be home in a few hours, keep an eye on your contracts.

Thanks for the replies!

Yes I understand this game has way more depth than the average MMO, I wasn't really expecting for someone to tell me exactly what to do just give me some general pointers if I had completely missed something (Which I had in the form of contracts which I somehow had failed to realise existed).

I will experiment with research and finding a good niche to make some money. I've already bought some drone BPO's and I'll be able to log on tomorrow to check my contracts. I completely expect to have a total cascade failure and have to start from scratch at some point too Shocked

Cheers.

You are already better prepared than most, just remember this post when it happens. Blink

Contract up.

Good luck to you.

I was not trying to make it seem like you asked a bad question or was trying to correct you in any way. I was more pointing out that rather than write a wall of text I felt I could serve you better with minimal direction and let you play with it yourself from there.

This part makes me think that you are way ahead of where I gave you credit for being and tells me you are on the right path and have the attitude to succeed so have fun building and breaking stuff.

Hi!
I would recommend at your current skill level not to manufacture that Mining Barge yourself.
EVE is suffering from overproduction, the market competition drive prices down.
So in the major trading hubs(Jita, Amarr, Dodixie, Rens) You'll get especially big ships rather cheap.

But find your special things to make and sell. There is possibilities :)

it helps if you're good/comfortable with spread sheets and formulae

slightly delayed market data -> https://eve-central.com/home/market.html

then just factor in material & station costs and compare your costs to produce an item against the cost to buy

researching your target market
researching your costs
gets you profits
doing it blindly .. you'll most likely lose ISK

At this point in your EVE career, I'd recommend just buying a mining barge. Between the cost of a blue print copy (BPC), the cost of the station services for using the manufacturing facilities, and the materials you would need, it would probably be cheaper. I'd also recommend a Procurer for your first mining barge. You are far, far less likely to get ganked in one of those than in a Retriever or Covetor.

In general, it's 'cheaper' to just buy a thing, rather than get the blueprint and do it yourself.

This is because of a few reasons.
1: The blueprints you buy from the market are Originals, and do not run out. As such, they take a long time to recoup their initial expense (but they don't depreciate in value).
2: Blueprints which you get from the market are unresearched, and as such have 10% waste on them. It takes research (more investment) to reduce that waste to a point where a profit is possible.
3: Blueprints you buy on contract may be copies (the cheaper options will be) and hence run out. This means you have to make your isk back over the course of the limited number of runs.

Industry is a deep topic. Most people who do it seriously end up with lots of spreadsheets, or programs to run the math for them, as the market shifts daily.

https://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/blueprint/ is a website I put together a while ago to run the numbers for people. Where you build can be as important as the blueprint you use.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to eve mail me :)
