I've been playing for four days and went into a wormhole

I have a friend named Jared who plays EVE Online a lot. He has 3 accounts and has always tried talking me into playing. A few years back I relented and finally bought a one month subscription, did a few missions from the starting agent and lost interest.

After watching Promotheus and Interstellar something within me wanted to give EVE a second chance. I loved the music, the graphics and the atmosphere the first time around so I wanted to try again.

Because of the one month free, another friend of mine (Chad – who is in this video) convinced me to download and install so I did. Because I run a livestream called Aficionado & Friends I've been streaming it on twitch for the last week or so. I must have played for at least 30 hours this weekend and I'm starting to grasp the game. I like EVE now.

Disregarding every shred of advice about not trusting anyone Chad and I followed a viewer named Kiradorn into a wormhole to ninja-mine for some sweet ores and had quite an adventure.

I hope this isn't against EULA but I just want you to watch what happened. I have no idea what I'm doing but I want to be loved.

Welcome to the game. posting vids is encouraged! there is even a dedicated forum section for vids and such.

I'd say trust is an interesting variable. with small amounts I'd say most people are trust worthy. Most people aren't going to go through the effort just to kill a t1 frig. For the ones that will, there is the old saying "never fly what you can't afford to lose."

Note that you went through a wormhole into nulsec (k-space to k-space connection), DAI-SH (-0.32 security which is less than 0, security used to round to 0 hence the name nulsec), controlled by a renter alliance, and given the activity looks like an unused system. Otherwise they probably ignored you since you were in Ventures, and there were only two of you.

You were attacked by NPC, not players. Looked like Rogue Drones.

Wormholes connections are not permanent; they have a limited duration and ship transit mass before they collapse. The ID will tell you where it goes (here's another reference), as well as clicking on it and reading its info. K-162 is an exit, and tells you nothing about the wormhole; click on it from the other side!

For info on ore value, see: http://ore.cerlestes.de/ and click on the top of the ISK column to sort.

Mistake #1: Using the radial menu.

People actually use this thing? UGH!! Drives me nuts (call me old-school), and seemed to confuse OP too.

Click on wormhole on overview. Click on jump button on the selected item window above the overview, just like for stargates.

RULE OF EVE: WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, RIGHT-CLICK IT!! Nearly everything in EVE has a drop-down context menu, that shows all possible actions on that object.

Mistake #2: When in w-space, your d-scan window is your life. Maximize it as much as possible.

[I wrote this before realizing you were in nulsec.]

Helps to have an overview tab setting that only shows ships, then checking the overview filter button to remove useless stuff from d-scan. You can switch momentarily back to an overview tab with asteroids when you need to target one (not very often in w-space).

Expect to be activating d-scan every 5-10 seconds, continually, for as long as you are in w-space (I lived there 2.75 years, and still click d-scan when in hisec). In hisec, nulsec, and lowsec (all three are called known space, or k-space) you can also use local to see who is in the system.

Don't be afraid to move, resize, sort (click on column headers), until things work for you.

Mistake #3: Not staying aligned to a celestial to instant warp and GTFO. Change celestials as necessary to stay in range of the asteroid you are mining.

I have an overview tab labeled GTFO with only: planets, stations, stargates, POCOs (player-owned customs offices).

One of many wormhole-tool sites: http://www.staticmapper.com/ Use the in-game browser.
Another, but I never used it: http://tracker.dropbear.life/

Will edit as I continue watching. Check back for updates (if any).

Call me whatever, but radial menu is pretty cool. I guess I still mostly use drop-down menus, but for some things radial one is pretty handy.

1. I like the radial menu and use it for a lot of things. clicking on it in the overivew then moving my mouse to the selected item box is more work than just using the radial menu. That said the radial menu option for recalling drones sucks.

3. warp speed rigged smartbombing cloaking t3s roam lowsec hunting pods, don't know quite how common they are, but I would avoid warping to planets at 0. I have moons and belts on my gtfo tab as that gives many options, and with most they won't be able to tell if you are warping to the planet, a belt, or a moon. and I feel like planet and pocos are about in the same spots. I guess there is some danger in warping to a moon as there might be a pos there and that might shoot you, but nearly every ship is fast enough to warp out before that happens. and I don't think they shoot pods.

I love the radial menu, I find it intuitive and prefer using it over right clicking often, not always but often.

Don't use people's real names. I'm not sure if you've actually done that here or not because the names you used are so generic but generally speaking it's a bad practice.

Both because transmitting personal information via the game is against the rules and even if your friend doesn't mind it's a bad habit that can potentially land you in a heap of ****. Also it's important to not equate your character in the game with you as a person.

A lot of the ore sites in wormhole space have rats which show up on a timer and will eat your Venture alive.

Also: this is a multiplayer game, bringing friends is a very good idea usually. Useful buddies: One with scanners and hacking tools (shiny data/relic sites), a couple with guns (rats, combat sites, other players), one with a mining barge (ore), Ventures/Prospects (gas sites). Cheap gear to start with-you will lose it.

OP, you might want to politely ask the ISD (volunteer forum moderators) folks to move this thread to EVE New Citizens Q&A . Show them there one can just go do stuff even as a new player.

Wormholes are, as you know, portals to other places. Some go to K-space (Known space) which is hisec (high security space), losec (low security space), and nullsec (0.0 security space, where you were at). Some go into wormhole space (systems accessible only through wormholes, which are an entire side of this game).

If you right-click on a wormhole and select "show info" it will tell you where it goes. fyi - "unknown" means a lower-class of wormhole (wormholes are classed C1-C6) and "Dangerous unknown" or "deadly unknown" means a higher class wormhole. Also, the colour of the wormhole will give you a hint. Reddish-orange is higher class of wormhole, greenish-blue is lower.

Anybody who is in a system with you will show in the local chat (even if they are cloaked) except inside wormhole space. In wormhole space, nobody shows in the local chat unless they talk. Your D-scan (Directional scanner) will show you what is in there with you - and is useful for that everywhere else, also.

Oh - and don't mine close to an object. You can get "caught" on it when you are trying to warp out.

- do yourself a favor and don't use WoW references in EvE...people here don't like that game.

- You will get blown up, don't worry about it, just learn from it and go on.

Research, have fun! o7

Keep at it Wek.

Wormholes are quite daunting especially for new players, but you have nothing to lose. There's a lot to learn about WH space, but here's my tips...

1) Go watch wingspanTT on YouTube - I'm a big fan of his work.
2) The Venture is a great ship. Get used to probing and scanning using this - it's cheap and has warp core stabs built in.
3) Also check out the racial exploration ships e.g. Heron, Imicus, Magnate, Probe - you can put a cloak on these. Then go look for relic sites.
4) Use your bookmarks and don't forget to bookmark the WH you just entered through!
5) Watch D-Scan always
6) Accept death. Go reship and learn from it.
7) Have fun!
