How does the skill points system benefit EVE, why should we keep it?

Over here I've argued that we should get rid of mods better than T1 and that ships which are better than T1 should justify their higher cost by fulfilling more roles at once instead of being fundamentally stronger than what new players fly: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=433318&find=unread

This begs a related question, why does EVE have a skill points system in the first place? As far as I can tell, it only serves three purposes:

1. Letting more established players lord it over newer players, which is a detriment to the game.
2. Emotionally blackmailing players into not quitting because of their "investment" which is increasingly not working on an aging player base.
3. Delaying people's ability to engage in certain activities, an aspect that players almost universally don't like.

If we had no skill points at all and instead everyone could do everything once they are part of the proper network, perhaps limited by "talent trees" or some similar system that cost ISK to change, I see only benefits for the game and no losses.

While I still think that EVE should level the playing field when it comes to items, a good starting point would be to get rid of skill points entirely. My character is years old now and it would take me over 76 days of training to be able to fly a marauder. Is that supposed to entice me? Are older players supposed to treat the game as a job and a long-term investment?

Not even trolling here, but is there anything you actually like about this game?

One of ours, ten of theirs.

Best Meltdown Ever.

*grabs some popcorns*

edit: and when I say "exceptional thread" I mean **** Straight
OP is obviously experimenting with forum search to find the redundant past thread topics with the most amount of flames attached.

I like the minority of the community who don't troll. :)

The point of the skillpoint system is to entice people to continue their subscriptions, and give them an artificial sense of achievement. Until they reach around 100mil SP, at which point they have typically figured out what they like about the game, trained for it, and SP has become meaningless.

If you aren't confident in the game play of your game, add "dings", basically. It's an old trick. People still eat it up.

I agree give everyone Level 90 Character Boosts.

Because it's about the destination, not the journey!

Waiting isn't a journey.

Forum rules

5. Trolling is prohibited.

Trolling is a defined as a post that is deliberately designed for the purpose of angering and insulting other players in an attempt to incite retaliation or an emotional response. Posts of this nature are disruptive, often abusive, and do not contribute to the sense of community that CCP promote.

17. Redundant and re-posted threads will be locked.

As a courtesy to other forum users, please search to see if there is a thread already open on the topic you wish to discuss. If so, please place your comments there instead. Multiple threads on the same subject clutter up the forums needlessly, causing good feedback and ideas to be lost. Please keep discussions regarding a topic to a single thread.

Closed. Probably my least favorite new trend.
