New Player Experience: Accelerated Learning

People don't like to say it but skill points are important in EVE, especially if you as a new player want to fly in smaller fleets and not just be another marginally useful tackle frigate.

I've trained new players and they were able to fly very well in fleets and follow commands within a few weeks, but to get them into decently fitted ships, even just t1 destroyers or cruisers with t2 weapons, takes at least a few months of skill training. It's really only once you have those first few million skill points that EVE, in general, starts to open up.

Also there's a lot of veteran players in EVE, and the experience, wealth and skill point gap between them and new players is very big. I think making some adjustments to skill training could help to reduce that gap slightly and improve the new player experience.

ATTRIBUTE IMPLANTS

Let's talk about attribute implants, they are a terrible idea. Why? Because the decent ones cost a lot of ISK, especially to new players who need skillpoints the most and are some of the biggest buyers of +3 attribute implants. Losing 30-50 mil for a new player is a lot, and understandably it makes them more risk averse and as a result they have less fun. The removal of clone upgrades helped this, but let's take another step forward. I'm not talking about removing these implants, but doing something so that new players don't feel they need to use them could possibly help.

ATTRIBUTES AND REMAPS

The attribute names themselves are confusing and remapping is also detrimental at this early stage. I've had many newbies who have messed up all their remaps, because at this stage they didn't really know what they wanted to specialize into, and then they were stuck with a bad remap for the next year which stunted their training.

Attribute names should also be improved as they don't make much sense right now, like you don't need intelligence to fly a spaceship or fire an advanced weapon system? Really?

SOLUTION? ACCELERATED LEARNING

One idea I had to address some of these issues was accelerated learning. Children absorb information like sponges, they learn stuff a lot quicker than adults. Why not the same for new capsuleers? Every new character on subscribed accounts should have all their attributes at maximum points for the first 3-6 months or so. This way new players don't have to deal with implants or remaps. Also, the skillpoints you start off with, even for a trial account, should be higher. Suitonia made a post about this on reddit.

Read forum rule #17. This has all been covered before.

I did find threads about skill training but none which had my specific idea. If mods feel they need to lock the thread then so be it.

They could just make civilian stuff not terrible, so they can at least use them outside of red cross popping.

Give it a lower, but not nil fitting requirement so it's not abused and that people who have the skills wouldn't willfully choose it.

Maybe we can just buy 90mil SP Pandarian Monks from the cash shop so new players can enjoy the new content.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

+3s cost ~9M each, +2s cost ~4M. That's all you need to train with an appropriate speed. It takes mere hours, without implants that is, to sit in a PVP capable ship. if new players feel coerced to use better than +2 or +3 implants right from the beginning, they are not exactly what this game needs. As usual, I will bring my personal story here: I have never sat in +4s for a long time, most of my EVE time I have used +3s and I am exceeding skill point estimations of Battleclinic by several million SP regardless.

Remapping is also nothing you are forced to use. I remember my first days where I trained with the standard attribute layout and progressed wonderfully. After a couple of days and some enlightening conversations in the Hedion University chat, I learned about EVE Mon, learned about skill plans, about attributes, about their benefits. I remapped later to the most appropriate attribute point distribution back then (Perc/Mem) and have not changed it since. I'm training everything with this, augmented by +3 implants.
If you use the Remapping senselessly and without educating yourself about it prior and then notice that you made a mistake or didn't take all the consequences into account, it is your own fault. Resources and other players willing to explain things to you are available in the game, it is the new player's responsibility to read/listen/watch and get in touch with them.
Furthermore, I do not see how the names are confusing:
Charisma for leadership, trade, contracts, corporation management is pretty much self-explanatory.
Perceptionfor things like Guns, Missiles, Ships should also be easy to understand as you need to keep track of your surroundings, other entities on grid, stats and so on. Perceiving the situations and acting accordingly.
Intelligence for science, electronic systems or targeting is self-explanatory.
Memory for things production, industry and the likes is also understandable, you need to keep many things in mind after all, from yields to job times, components, compositions, blueprint stats and so on.
Willpower plays into a couple of things in terms of mental and physical durability (gunnery, spaceship command), persuasion and wit (trade) and so on.

How is any of this hard to understand with a bit of thought effort put into it?

There are already Standard Cerebral Accelerator available, giving new players a massive skilling boost.

My ridicule, heavy criticism and general pale outlook about your or CCP's ideas is nothing but an encouragement to prove me wrong. Give it a try.

As a courtesy to other forum users, please search to see if there is a thread already open on the topic you wish to discuss. If so, please place your comments there instead. Multiple threads on the same subject clutter up the forums needlessly, causing good feedback and ideas to be lost. Please keep discussions regarding a topic to a single thread.

Unfortunately this has come up many times, and I'd encourage you to contribute to one of the many other threads out there. Thread locked.
