I am a newbie and this is what I have found after 6 months of playing.

Be careful of the following scam, they will invite you to a private chat and tell you they have the corp you want, and it looks professional. Then after making you give an API key they will tell you to contract their stuff over via courier or just give it away for easy transport due to wardeccing problems. After that they may also ask for a isk application fee. They will take your stuff and your money and you wont get it back. Someone tried to do this to me just now so I thought I'd pass it along because if I had done this a few months ago I might have been fooled. Except he asked for way more ISK than a normal newbie should have. But I know a couple other newbies who went ahead and bought lots of isk right away for spending.

All the tutorials tell you to find a corp right away, but what they don't say is it is nearly impossible to find a corp that will take in anyone new, as the corp system is pretty badly designed and no one wants to take on newbies though you hear differently. Training newbs is hard. The best bet I have found is to join Faction Warfare if you like PVP, as ships can be passed out on the fly to fleet and no investment needs to be made in big storehouses of goods. So they don't need to trust you as hardcore as nullsec corps. FW is a good way to learn PVP too cuz random people you fleet with don't have to be in your same corp (you are all in one big faction alliance together and can join posted fleets) and will give you pointers if you are nice and ask. If you want to do PVE you can also ask for a referral in the Faction Warfare militia chat and that is safer than asking in Recruitment! Also you are likely to find a good corp that way.

To you crusty old fartknocking neckbeards who say "We already know" get bent, this is for newbies like me not you.

Ahh the recruitment scam, fyi the people who are stuck posting here don't actually have anything worth taking yet.

By the time you do However one would hope they'll have enough of an introduction (particularly of they talk to people as they learn)
To know
Never trust random people with your stuff ,
only ones you have leverage on,
and only as far as your leverage will cover.

Never pay into a Corp.

Sorry you had a rough experience mate, chalk it up as as learning experience and move on.

There are plenty that take new players w/o the scams. Use the corp search tool with the right filters. Also a lot of well known corps do as well, like Red vs Blue, Brave Newbies, EVE University (takes time to get in), bunch of others just mentioning a few for example. Lots of corps do take new players though, especially in pvp where you can run tackle with very little SP. It's not like a themepark mmo where players are about worthless until they hit cap.

I'm in it for the money

there are plenty of new player friendly corps out there. Trouble is that most of them are high sec carebear corps that due to advertising that they are new player friendly and recruiting and high sec dewellers gets them pretty much perma wardeced which usually makes the new player's early weeks needlessly full of drama.

I agree the the corp system and war dec system are problematic and hit new player friendly corps harder. My main's corp was very new player friendly for many many years until we had to stop doing it in order to maintain some blue agreements. I really miss those days and wish we could take in new players still.

The key for new players is to find a corp that is new player friendly but not advertising which is a very difficult thing to do. However one thing that you can do is join public channels either of the corps looking for new members or some of the public channels many people in here put in their signatures. You will be able to talk to vets there and in many cases find helpful people eager and happy to hand out advice. Yes you'll also find some asshats but that's true anywhere.

The other thing that you can do is just talk to random people. You can do a show info on them and check out their bio, their corps description and maybe see if you want to talk to them. Then ask about what they do and how their corp is and if they are taking new players in. Even if some players don't want to talk to you or are mean some will talk and be helpful.

You can also just talk in local. Watching local and seeing who the regulars are and which corps have several people in the area can be helpful information. Finding a corp that is active locally and doing what you want to do can be an excellent start.

Your main problem (the problem for most new players in fact) is to use the recruitment forum here to find a good corporation.
Most of the corporations who advertise there are NOT good for new players.
But there are tons of good corpos with honest, experienced and helpful players who will welcome newcomers. You just have to find them in game.
There is a tool in game to find corpos by choosing some criteria such as newbie friendly, roleplay, activities, time zone, size, language...
You can also get to know people regulary flying in your space by reading their bio.

Don't hesitate to poke me in game, i'll be glad to help you find a home Smile

Good advice, but you forgot to mention that when a corp scammer like that contacts you, you should really keep them hanging for as long as possible asking dumb questions. While you are leading them on they aren't scamming someone else was my thought.

I had one contact me on my other toon and had him going for an hour or so, but I did tell him I had billions to throw away on pvp. I didn't think of it at the time but you could put a massive price on the stuff you contract hoping that they click accept without looking properly. Scamming a scammer would be a win for everyone.

This scam does happen, but avoiding all corporations isn't the best way to protect yourself. This ought to be one of the golden rules of EVE: other players can only betray you to the extent that you put your trust in them. Instead of contracting all of your stuff to them for safe transport to 0.0, tell them "I'm going to come out in an interceptor and buy new stuff at home base." There's no reason a legitimate corporation will need you to fly your battleship or capital on day one... so leave it in the hangar and come back for it later. Or sell it and use the cash to buy new ships at your new home. Handing all your things over to a perfect stranger is just tempting them, and there's no good reason to do it.

Do what I do: don't relocate. Stay in your home system. If the corp you're joining doesn't like that, don't join.

New Eden isn't nice. It isn't friendly. It isn't very hospitiable. Good thing there are people here to shoot in the face.

Want to make New Eden a nice place? Try this out.

Hahaha, that's tha hallmark of a truly excellent scam, even after you twig it you still think you can come out on top .

When you join a new corp, never, never move any assets right away. Fly out in a cheap/disposable ship and hang out for a few weeks to get a real feel for it before taking anything expensive.

Honestly, when you are moving - its often easier to sell everything in place and then buy new stuff that you need where you are at. If you are somewhat self sufficient you can even just buy some bpc and build your stuff or have someone build it for you at your new place. And never ever give your stuff to someone to haul for you unless you really know and trust them - and even then when their ship gets ganked on the way you may still be screwed.

I don't play, I just fourm warrior.

True, although I'm lazy enough I don't even sell it. I have so many assets collecting dust in old systems I called home....The thought of traveling around/liquidating at this point terrifies me given how long it would take.
