Those games, UO, EQ etc were not in their infancy, or that of the genre (they were based on MUD's btw), they were more advanced than most of the junk mmo's out now. They were actually mmo's, while many now are simply multi-player games for the most part. Raids? dungeons? all instanced multi-player garbage now, wow popularized that modeled after Diablo.

Diablo was a game that more or less is a lineage of games like Castle Wolfenstein (original) or Nethack. Games like EQ and UO were actually called Graphical MUD's before Richard Garriott started calling them MMORPG (middle-aged men online role-playing girls) which imo further confused things. So then we have the rise of these games that are not even MUD style at all, not even PnP, certainly not purely mmo, just a jumble of various things that can fit into any silly acronym.

mmo's/graphical-mud's fared far-far better before they were noticed by the vultures for their "cultural importance" and potential cash cow... (still reading) ...lol and the writer taking shots at SL, I'm falling out of my chair here. Soo... SL had it's shot at being a WoW killer?? At least SL is an actual mmorpg sort of thingy, certainly strongest RPG in anything with mmo in it's description, though probably more like a Graphical-MUSH. DOTA's are not mmo's either. They call everything an mmo now a days, don't they? Yes, the article is clueless.

I'm in it for the money

The article says nothing with a lot of words. Do people get paid to write like that?

And oh yes, the MUDS... heh... I was writing MUD programs on the Commodore Vic 20 back in the day. All text, easy to write.

It's been said, and I believe it, that Eve Online can be played "all text" style or one text field and one overview. Some people arrange their clients that way. You can tell an old school MUD player (but you can't tell him much).

It would help if people would make new MMOs that cant be finished in a week. Not a single one these days are built with long term content and they are all grindy loothunter simulations with a bit of PvP stapled on as an afterthought with a slightly different skin.

It will probably stay that way, too. Great games are hard to come by. It's the same as anything else. Just gotta keep your eyes peeled for that diamond in the rough.

Traditional 'gaming journalism' has gone downhill since gamergate, which is a little sad, but fortunately there are plenty of other ways to get accurate information about games.
