Call to the Tribes: Neytleyur

To our cousins of the Tribes, Clan Idisen send tidings of open hand.

As it is told in Mithuris, "Though the path is clear, the wind tells of troubles on the way."

With a mark on recent seasons, see here and on the Network the heated words traded between we Matari, often made before unfriendly eyes or without reflection of the uncomfortable thereafter. Mayhap a lack of forethought brings us to blows, for reasons told by us, the ancestors, or none at all, and when the dust settles some might wish better by the wisdom of the elders come and gone. Distant ties or close, the sting of worrisome thought daunts Family and Clan. Young brave and windworn mother both feel the disquiet in their bones, cousins wish to amend their bonds yet cannot find the words to make peace. Still more feel the wanting of a closer bond, or feel the confusion and detachment in the dimming of our kinship.

This has been so for all our days, afore and since the great Mootbreaking when the Tribes clung together as one people, when the elders of their elders knew that there will come a time when one will tell the next, "give up your grief, and fix the goodwill of your kith." The ancestors see us well, and grant us a way to make right our wrongs.

So, by the marking of Old Mother's days, we approach the 9th Season, named by some Sobaki clans Sulmindur, and in the changing do call upon our cousins by blood, those who feel the pang of kinship unstuck, to gather together for Neytleyur, a time to rekindle the warmth of amity.

If you, our cousins, think to render amends to your kin, speak the appeal plain, and present yourself before your assembled kith on YC117.06.20 around 2200 NEST, at a location we will share privately. If you have not participated in a ceremony of obviation, as this is sometimes called, look further to the workings of the rite, here described by some of our wandering friends.

From The Stowaway's Guide to the Real Republic™, YC115 Edition

It has been noted that the Minmatar are a fractious people in some respects, yet regardless of current loyalties, they as a people can be traced to common origins. In anthropological studies of nomadic traditions of justice, particularly that between families and clans of the Matari tribes, a recurring theme is a redress of grievances that social scientists often refer to as obviation. These are typically semi-formal ceremonies where figurative hatchets may be buried, actual debts may be forgiven, and proverbial seeds of goodwill may be sown between individuals, families, or clans.

Essentially, a rite of obviation is a somewhat formal ceremony, led by a non-affiliated shaman, wherein an offending member of the Tribes may petition or appeal to the offended party (pursuant to some form of dispute) in an attempt at a normalization of relations. The extent and nature of offenses covered by obviation are broad, but do not include the most serious crimes. The particulars of the ceremony vary from clan to clan and Tribe to Tribe, but most clans recognize the rite as not only critically important to spiritual well-being, but also as a valid and legal form of reparations. In most cases, participation is restricted to those of pure or mixed Tribal blood, but the stipulations are relaxed by some clans: generally those located in areas with greater non-Matari populations or outside of the Republic.

There are some interesting nuances to the functions of the ceremony, such as what is done if involved parties wish to participate, but cannot. Either party to the obviation has the option to select a Second, in whom the concerned party places faith to conduct all matters relevant to the reconciliation. The Second is completely at the prerogative of that concerned party, and they may be of any race, bloodline, or political affiliation; as far as the rite is concerned, they are indivisible from the Matari they represent. The selection of a Second is not taken lightly, as one can imagine, but it is a means for non-Matari to support their friends of the Tribes. Poor selection, or poor behavior from a Second, will reflect just as badly if not worse on the Matari who selects said individual.

Traditionally, no participant may choose the shaman presiding over the obviation, so that responsibility typically falls upon a neutral host, which can be an individual, Circle, Family, or Clan (often capitalized in reference to specific groups). That neutral party may not participate in the ritual proceedings, but may only act as a mediator before or after the rite. In the event that a petitioner wishes to obviate with the dead, the shaman will act as Second for the ancestors.

I would be interested in attending. In some degree at least.

This is one of these days when I regret I am not from Sebiestor tribe. I love studying other cultures, but I think this ceremony is too private for an outsider like me.

Question for the hostess: can I make an appeal on behalf of my family, even ancestral members?

Is this like a religious thing? Can I go and be forgiven for my sins?

After taking counsel from the seyd presiding, I might provide some clarity.

  • The rite is for individual Matari to address the aggrieved in a particular matter.
  • Both parties to a grievance should concur to the rite to be bound by it.
  • The host may provide aid with concurrence pending the need, but only the shaman may Second the dead.

The seyd presides over one of two rites, and bears no agency to mete justice for old wrongs or impose familial trucerules. Ways for that exist, but they are not Neytleyur.

It is always an honor to acknowledge the time proven ways of the Matari people. If other obligations permit I will be in attendance once you inform me of the location privately.

I am unable to attend - my time is exclusively spent fighting to give our brothers and sisters in Amarr systems the same opportunities to attend to their cultural heritage that is taken for granted by the free peoples of New Eden. Everyone I would trust as a second is also involved in our liberation efforts and cannot be spared.

As you conduct your ceremonies spare a thought for all those who are shackled by oppression that can only dream of attending and for those who are equally improsoned by their unceasing duty to fight on our enslaved clan mates behalf.
