Hey, new player, looking for some advise.

In your opinion, for PvP, is the Rifter or the Firetail superior, or is it just a matter of preference?

which can you afford to lose 10-12 of to learn?

Both have perks Firetails got buffed a while ago and are pretty good now. Rifters have always been tried and true.

I suggest you start with rifters and then move to firetails as you become more confident

Good advice here. Rifters are pretty bad these days, but they are cheap and the right kind of ship to learn on. Firetails are great once you learn.

rifter is really bad.

i'd go with a slasher if you want to practice before moving to firetail. Hull bonuses and 4 mids layout makes it more similar to the firetail as well

This, Rifter is bad. It's subpar in pretty much every single type of fit it has. Slasher on the other hand has some nice perks like having 4 mids, being fast and having a tracking bonus.

And beeing tiny. Beeing tiny is its best stat.

Yeap, you can even speed tank non-tracking bonused light neutron blasters with a TD while not webbed in the Slasher whihc is pretty amazing. However you're pretty much never going to be able to kill a flight of lights before dying which is abit sad, it would make a great big-ship tackler if it was a wee bit more tanky.

I dislike the firetail, it never seems to perform in my hands. I much prefer a Slicer for Brawling, or a Comet for... anything else.

In FW low brawling in anything with 2 mids is a terrible idea. Any competently flown Ab/Scram/Web frigate can beat a brawl slicer with no issues.

rff with dual webs and artys is fun to fly, mostly because everyone engages.

RFF is probably a great choice for a newer pilot because you can get good performance out of meta 4 artillery, weak navi skills can be compensated for by dual webs, SAAR tank is not very skills-intensive and if things aren't going your way halfway through the fight then you have speed superiority over any three-mid-slot frigate and should be able to disengage. Still, be wary of Tristans...

Only problem with firetail for newer pilots is that you have to have minmatar frigate 5 trained to get decent dps.
