Wrecks on the directional scanner?

Earlier today, I checked out the 0.9 system I was in using my directional scanner, and I saw that there was around three dozen wrecks in the system comprising of all kinds of ships.

However I couldn't locate any of them dispite repeated scans with them being shown, but nothing showed on the overview, as the distance to any wreck was shown as - on the directional scanner.

I put a question about these wrecks in the local channel, and one of the eight pilots in system said that were probably mission ship wrecks.

Is it possible to locate these wrecks using the directional scanner or using probes, as its sooo frustrating seeing all that salvage and loot being out of reach? Sad

You can use the dscan to see them but not probes, the best you can hope for is the bear will have either a mobile tractor or a drone left out that the probes can see.

Yep, it's all trash anyway, if you're looking for isk the way to go is drones and abandoned/forgotten mobile tractors.
There's good money in recovering lost drones, particular t2 one's and geckos are stupidly expensive so you're looking at an easy 60 million per gecko you find.

It's also worth noting that it's pretty common for bears to allow newbies so salvage their wrecks, just ask the locals for a warp in and I'm sure someone will oblige

On the only bright note, I managed to locate my first cosmic signature using probes, but it was an armed camp, and I didn't have so much as a pea shooter, so that was out of bounds as well. Sad

LoL, you know you can scan down players and their assets is space using combat probes yes?

I probably should have lead with that but my kids are charging around and distracted me,

I used to practice probing in Amarr, by searching for abandoned drones.

There isn't a lot of mission-running in Amarr, but there was still a large amount of abandoned drones to be found.

A system where mission running is more common, e.g. Penirgman, ought to be chock-full of abandoned and active drones.

Short answer - No forget about those wrecks.
Long answer - If your a masochist you can still find those wrecks. It involves d-scanning the wrecks down to a few degrees variation by using the camera, notate the distance, warping to a celestial in that direction, making a bookmark mid warp when you've gone approximately that distance, warp back to your book mark, scan for those wrecks, narrow down the direction, notate the distance....yeah you get the picture.

Honestly it's a PITA and I've never successfully done it before giving up. But wrecks last for 2 hours from their creation...so....if you're really determined....

I've read though that people used this method to get the drop on un-probable ships back in the day.

That won't work.

one AU is 149 597 871km. Even if you have a slow warping ship that only does 2AU/s, and even if the grid on which the target is is 1000km big (which is very unlikely), you'd have to hit a time frame that is only 0.00000342s big. Since EVE runs on a 1HZ destiny tick - you get the picture.

It might be possible to find someone who made the spot he is in in the same way, since this person would have to have made the BM also on the 1HZ servr tick, so you can in fact get it down to the right spot in theory - but pretty much only in theory.

It is possible, it involves making a lot (hundreds) of bookmarks on all sides of your target, each getting a bit closer. Eventually you land within a 1000km or so and you can burn the rest of the way until you get on grid. I've done it, I wouldn't recommend it though.

If the target is exactly in line with two celestials it can be done rather quickly though. Your first BM is at 1 AU the second at 0.5 AU, the third at 0.25 AU, etc... If you started at 1 AU and want to end up 1000km from the target it will take log-2 (149597871 / 1000) roughly 17 warps, a couple of minutes in an interceptor.

On a side note, when combat probing with custom filters make sure you have selected all the ships ... yesterday I figured out why Prospects and Svipuls always escape my last scan run ...

... when the new ship types were introduced I fixed my overview settings but forgot the combat probe filters. *facepalm*

I'm my own NPC alt.

Yeah, I know you can do that, and I'll be doing it at some point in the future, after I've gone through the revenge phase of my Eve...experience/career.

I think that you are forgetting that you do not instantly reach max warp speed upon entering warp. Yes the first time you try and land near them this might come into play. However once you are close enough you'll not even reach max warp speed before you are decelerating to land on your BM.
