A veteran noob returns. For some fun? (Long read, no TLDR)

September, 2003. I started playing the game, after having looked at a buddy playing this weird spaceship game thingie, with a weird looking spaceship called a Moa or something. He called it a chicken. I thought it looked grey and weird. I didn't like grey and weird. And those yellow thingies? Not my style either. And of course, don't you even dare mention the rusty pieces of metal! So that left me with one choice, the awesome looking ones, and I became a Gallente character so I could start flying them right away. A few hours later I joined the corp my buddy was in and things took off from there.

Fast forward, 2011. I had been playing for years before taking a long break and then decided I'd give it a go again. With two other buddies, that were also inactive, we came up with this crazy plan to see how fun and fast it would be to start over from scratch. Sell most of our assets for silly prices, even far below market price, reprocess the rest and sell the minerals, then take all the isk and give it away. I think most of it was sent to BIG Games, since that seemed like the easiest way to get rid of it. And off we started, with nothing but a rookie ship and the implants in our heads. And of course, a lot of lovely skillpoints to make things easier than if we had started a new character. Unfortunately one of the buddies couldn't stick to the plan and borrowed some money to get a bigger ship faster. The plan failed and we stopped before reaching our predetermined goals. I transferred all my stuff to the non-cheating buddy before logging off at the end of my subscription period. And back to hiatus with little old me...

Another fast forward to 3 days ago. One of the previously mentioned buddy told me he had made a new trial account, because he wanted to see how the game was now, and some of his co-workers had talked about new thingies you could deploy in space. One was supposedly a tractor beam thingie and he thought it sounded cool. And of course, since I was the one getting him started on this game back in the day, I absolutely had to hear about it. And there was supposedly also some free stuff you could redeem from the system. And darn him to heck, I got tempted too. So I went to account management to see if I could figure out what stuff I would get. And read more about that Tractor thingie elsewhere on the internet. Couldn't find what I was looking for in AM, so figured, what the heck, gimme a month, let's see what this old-timer has to play with. Install the game and let's try to log in. That's when I started smiling. Oh. My. GAWD! Changes EVERYWHERE! Graphics update! Convenience update! A ton of other Quality Of Life improvements. EVERYWHERE!!! Why the heck did I leave this game in the first place? Alright, first things first, what ship am I in? Oh. A pod. A pod, really? What the heck? "Bud, why am I in a pod?" "You gave me ALL your stuff 4 years ago, including a noob ship!" "Oh, right," Oh well, there's always the good old Velator, I'll use that little chubby thing for now. Make Active. What happened to my chubby little one-armed man? He's now slim? Aww maaan!

With just a Velator and zero isk, I was effectively back where the three of us had intended to be, 4 years ago. It took me all of 5 minutes to decide that I wanted to go through with a modified version of the plan from back then. We had set some goals for ourselves, but no timelimit. Just a "How long would it take to get to this point?" kind of thing. No outside help, just us in noob ships working together. This time around, only one person will follow a plan. Me. My buddy already reactivated two of his accounts (we were both multi-accounting back when we were active), so he got not only all of his stuff, but also what I gave him that was worth something. Like my beloved Kronos. But I don't want any of it. Or any of his several billion isk that could easily buy me any ship I can fly. I want to see how far I can get, all on my own, in one month of gametime. While also taking care of real life stuff like work and social activities. I gives me incentive to play, rather than just log in, jump back to old habits and chain level 4 missions or whatever. I also know it will teach me a thing or two about EVE, most of which I have forgotten long ago and the rest is more or less outdated. As an example, I used to run a pretty classic dual armor rep setup on my bigger ships and could pretty much sit still while being more or less invulnerable. Now I'm in a destroyer. I can't do that in a destroyer! So I have to play a bit differently. Just today, on day 3, I remembered WHY there's an Orbit function in this game and WHY it works soooooo well with afterburners on some ships. A few hours ago I was struggling to take out just one NPC cruiser at max range with longrange ammo in longrange guns. If there was more than one cruiser in range, I would take more damage than I could survive. Then I started using Orbit. And then I could move to closer combat, dealing more damage while taking a lot less myself. Why the heck didn't I think of that sooner?

Anyways, long story short, I think I'm going to have fun here. I'm not sure if I'll be maintaining a subscription after this month is up (and I seriously doubt I'll make enough surplus isk to buy a plex), I'm already subbing to several other MMOs so they are a higher priority later on, but for now EVE will be taking most of my gaming time. And the plan is simple. No outside help except for borrowing enough money from corp wallet to buy that Mobile Tractor Unit (which is AWESOME!). Just me. Playing the game like I see fit. Where can that take me? How much money can I make? Which class of ship will I end up in? I have one month to work with, let's see what happens. It's gonna be fun. For me, at least Lol

Nope, no questions to ask. I may be a noob, but I am a veteran too, so I know what I need to know and I can google my way to the rest. No need to ask silly questions like "what should I be doing first?" when I know exactly what I will be doing.

Besides, it's a nice change from all the really silly stuff that goes on in most General Discussion forums, regardless of game. Way too often it's whiners calling for nerfs or supposedly long-term players asking how to do the most basic stuff. This is just a veteran noob dropping by to say "hi, I'm back for a bit and I'm going to play somewhat differently to what I used to".

That could have been a nice TLDR, if I hadn't written in the title of this topic that there would be no TLDR Roll

Is this someone who has figured out that the best way to beg for isk is to beg to not be given any isk?

Covering all the bases here: You have tried Low Sec / Worm Holes and Null Sec in small and large corps / alliances?
I see that you have done some PVP, so at least that is covered. Sounded like you might have become bored from grinding AI and nothing else.

Tldr: the game is better than in 2003.

I honestly don't see a point in trying to do that. I don't plan to stick around for longer than the current month.

Don't worry, there's more to it than just buying a MTU Lol

As part of the original Curse Alliance, 10 years ago, I did my time in 0.0. As part of Factional Warfare, 7 years ago, I did my duty for the Federation. When wormholes got introduced, 6 years ago, I headed in there for a bit before finally leaving the game. I've been in smaller corporations on this character, bigger corporations on others, playing both sides of a war, hiding in high-sec, smacktalking people in local and so on and so forth...

I know, I know, things have changed over the years and I might rekindle the fire that once burned so brightly that I paid for several accounts for a year at a time. But for now, the plan is to do this thing, then back to the real world.
