Question about Model Extraction

This is more of a legal question than anything.

May I create constructive, non-commercial fan works (such as animations, games, images, etc) with extracted CCP assets? Are there guidelines? Or is this just a no-no.

Thanks in advance.

As a general rule, as long as you are not making money off of it you should be fine. Not sure of official stance but there are many threads about it and have never seen anyone say it is a no no. You can always file a petiton (F12 in game) to get an official answer.

Suddenly I understand why people have been asking me if I have old versions of the client still.

It would be pretty cool to be able to get hold of the 3D models and make them explode and stuff with motion graphics software. It took me literally 10 seconds to find this Kestrel and others. All artistic designs are default copyright owned by their creator which in the case of an employee is usually transfered to company asset as part of their employment contract ect... this tends to mean they have the right to say what can and can't be done with said designs which will be written in the small print somewhere. In real terms whether that small print reflects what they are actually going to do about you using there designs is a good question, but stated is the powers which they legally have.

The user agreement could say something about use of the designs and could potentially have consequences within the game but I get the impression Eve is fairly friendly towards external sites so use of the designs is probably only restricted for anything deemed counter productive to Eve.

I can't imagine what you would do with them that would be counter productive but I guess something might be.

CCP has an api that provides this stuff. I'll update this later when I find a link to the info.

Updated: I hope this is the right link. I haven't worked with it myself. https://github.com/ccpgames/ccpwgl
