EVE General Discussion

I am not good at EVE, or so I have been told many many times. And while many happily say such things, no one ever asks why? In all honesty I am a newb, and I joined the game when very little helpful information about the game existed. I feel like this shapes player's views of the game significantly. So I am sharing my true EVE story.

I found out about EVE Online from the Alias/Wavefront Maya website. It was listed on the "company's who use our products" page. I followed the link to the EVE Online website and what I read intrigued me. I had just come from playing Starlancer/Freelancer, and it sounded similar enough to give a try. I tried the tutorial in the game for a little while which led to mining.

I got bored with mining, in less than an hour, and decided it was time to get some Minmatar revenge on some Amarr. So I jumped some gates till I saw a massive Apoc battleship moving to the gate. I targeted the ship, fired, and was immediately blown up by Concord. I was PM'd by the player, and asked why I shot/suicide. I gave him the explanation "I thought the Amarr and Minmatar were at war." Taking advantage of my ignorance I was invited to a low sec planet. Little did I know, he had a POS. When I warped to the location I was quickly blown up by the POS defenses. I was convo'd told what happened and given some isk for my amusement.

Activating my new clone in Hulm, I decided maybe I wasn't ready for PVP yet. I went back to mining. I was suddenly contacted by another player and asked to join his mining corp. Since PVP did not work out as planned, I accepted. I joined him, and a recent friend I made while being recruited, in a low sec mining op with the CEO I had never met. The low sec mining op went well. I made some ISK and another was scheduled shortly after.

During the second mining op something went horribly wrong. Our CEO started targeting our mining ships and then started to fire. Pirates warped in, me and my friend from earlier were the only ones to escape. Our recruiter was podded, and a mining barge was lost. I must admit, I started to have trust issues after that.

Needless to say, the corp dissolved. I decided to start a new corp with one of the remaining members. I was flying a cruiser now, which was later lost in a low sec mining op shortly after. Eventually my friend got into a mining barge, but lost it quickly. He blamed me and I could not figure things out for the future of the corp. After taking a destroyer into low sec and losing it in a close fight with Slarti, I decide to put EVE Online away for a while.

I took a two month break to try to learn more about the game and see where I went wrong. While bad things happen in this game, it is rare to have the corp situation I had. So I re subscribed and created a whole new player. I decided I would still mine and joined a really good, but small mining corp. We did high sec mining ops and I was payed for attending. I didn't like mining though, and did not learn anything about combat. But I figured I needed an income so I specialized in mining.

After a while, I got tired of my meager wages and the boredom of high sec mining ops. I went to the recruitment channel looking for null corps. I joined a corp with some guys who seemed to be decent enough PVPers. I went to Null and started to mine. Everything started well enough until I tried to go back to empire to sell my ore. Apparently, the elite PVPers weren't able to hold the system like they thought. I safely made my way back to empire and quit that corp.

I started to feel like I could do better as a CEO rather than a worker. So I started a corp...again. I knew what I was doing when it came to mining and was able to quickly recruit 15 very loyal newb miners into the corp. I gave them fair wages and bought them their first barges.

Everything started to go well. The ISK I gained from the mining ops allowed me to try many different combat ships which I often lost in low sec. two months after the corps founding, we were wardec'd. I had to manage the fears of the corp and I did my best to keep things together. I let those who did not want to fight leave. To my surprise many decided to stay. We fought best we could, and the wardecing corp decided to take things personally. So I quit the corp and the game.

Convinced that Minmatar space was just full of harassment, the Thorax faceroll in the EVE tourney, and drones seemed to be the answer to all of PVP's/PVE's problems, I created a Gallente and Amarr character. I made more isk from mission running in a month, than my whole EVE life mining. I comfortably fitted battleships for PVE, and was emboldened to try PVP again. As much as I was making, I was alone. I did not trust corporations and Gallente NPC corps provided a lot of company but not too much in the way of PVP.

I joined an omni corp after a while as I was very bored with the game. I thought I could learn PVP from one of the PVP guys, but in reality, it was a bunch of miners with goals to fly Orcas. The CEO was just playing the game to simulate running a business. I un subbed for two years. I recently came back to share and learn some more.

Things I didn't know that I wish I had:
Don't do missions in Minmatar ships (at least as a newb)
Train as much as you can to lvl 5
T2/T3 is so worth the wait.
Don't join corps if the CEO is a business major.
Don't fly a ship just because it is big and expensive, It will not be more effective.(Even if missions lead you to believe this.)
Trade in the market, it is the best/ fastest/ safest way to make isk in the game
Mining is the most boring thing to do in EVE, missions are better and at least you get some combat skills.
There aren't many corps/alliances in EVE that are well run.

You sound like you've had an excellent time with EVE.

I play EVE a totally different way and find it quite fun.

No PvP at all.

Lots of mining in High Sec, with some Battleship flying to kill NPCs.

And that's about it, maybe launch a POS in high security just to try that out.

I don't really have a good attention span, so mining is excellent!

The issue with distrusting other players is chronic with MMO games, my solution is that I tend to play solo, a lot, but that's fine, I'm good company.

Want to learn to pvp? Get out of highsec and join lowsec pirate corp. It really is not that hard.
