On loyalty and its rewards

When I was 15, I had a summer job installing carpets for Albert Kodagolian on Lake Charlevoix. Horrible job... hot, indoors, forced to listen to "The Gambler" on 8-track while the rest of the world was at the beach. Three days into the job, I knew I had to quit. I asked my father for advice. All he wanted to know was whether I'd given my word to Mr. Kodagolian that I'd work the summer. I told him I had. My father suggested I stick it out. I'd given my word. Worst eight weeks of my life. Until the last day. Mr. Kodagolian shows up at the jobsite, pulls me aside, and tells me that in 27 years, no kid has ever made it through the summer, gives me a bonus... $40. The most valuable money I've ever made. A priceless lesson about life. Value loyalty above all else.

Good to know that there are people who value "your word". A lesson that I've tried to ingrain into my kids.

I am all for keeping one's word, but bonus of less than $.75 per day almost seems like a slap in the face.

Congratulations for graciously accepting the bonus.

I know he could have just given you praise and that should be enough and that I do not know what your hourly pay rate was, but.......

Loyalty, giving your word, and honoring it. "Honor." I still haven't found anyone with a good definition of honor. Maybe it's undefinable? Here's a primitive start: "Honor: Even though nobody was watching and nobody noticed, you did the "right" thing, rather than the cheap, more advantageous to yourself thing."

Bah, honor is beyond all time frames and all local cultures. You're either a stand-up guy or you're an untrustworthy wuss. Easy test is to go on a camping trip or a long road trip with somebody. In the middle of it, everybody knows who you can do it again with, and who is never invited again. You might still like them, but you wouldn't invite them again.. No judgment, it just wouldn't cross your mind when you're planning a quest out to nowhere.

From a discussion of synonyms for "honor" on dictionary.reference.com :
Quote:
Honor denotes a fine sense of, and a strict conformity to, what is considered morally right or due.

This actually is a good definition of the sense of the word you are talking about. Your example lists some facets of honorable behavior; honesty, living up to one's word, and unselfishness (not the same as selflessness).

I'm only now watching The Blacklist and there I encountered this quote.

Love that series.

Shame you seem to tried to pass it as your own.

Likely the US since "8-track tapes" (almost before my time) and "$". I could buy a pack of smokes for about 80 cents across the street from school (when I smoked).
$40, that's like two new Atari 2600 games, which is even probably a few years later. A regular candy bar, 25 cents.
15yo, I was working construction in the summer and weekends as an apprentice. I could hit a real nail with a real hammer (little finish hammer) when I was about three. Journeyman carpenter by 18yo. Kept at it for some years until the construction collapse. Did it a few more years later. Might do some in the future developing recreational properties (in nice remote hunting areas), it's on the table anyway for something on the side.

Yes, good to learn something when young, a trade or something. Younglings only playing PS3 and taking out the trash seems all too common now. They wait until someone maybe hands them a career after amassing huge debt in their 20's.

I'm in it for the money
