Original EVE

Recently I was watching the The EVE Online Show 12th Birthday Special listening to CCP Hellmar talk about the original EVE game and it occurred to me that a very large chunk of the EVE community has never played (or even seen) that original 400MB EVE from 12 years ago.

Would it be possible to re-release that game in some form so that players who weren't around over a decade ago could experience first hand the foundation from which this awesome game evolved? Even if it were only loaded on the test server for a limited time as a special event I'm sure a lot of people would be eager to try it.

Agreed, even as a player for 10 years there is further back I can go and enjoy on an alternate or private server allowed version of the original client/engine.

No vote here.
Without the 'single shard you actions have meaning' aspect to it, any 'bring back' would just be a troll fest since people wouldn't be thinking long term at all and wouldn't care about reputations.

ITT, Rose colored glasses

The only good thing about EvE back then vs. now is that null was still wildlands in many areas. Alliances and mega-coalitions had not yet claimed every square inch of it.

They would start the game and see it is EXACTLY the same gameplay except with horrible graphics.

Dumb.

I have never understood that process... Those of us who'd roll back to the old stuff (and have our eyeballs seared out of our skull) would immediatly just become "goon 2.0" since well, thats what works...

We might not be flying ishtars and tengus, but well, that doesnt really matter...

Do people often download alpha/beta of games they already own and play post release just to feel how it was in that old state?

I would, especially with a game over a decade old that in it's current form looks and plays almost nothing like it's earliest iteration.

Than again I'm the sort of nutty retro gaming eccentric who likes old Atari and Amiga computer games so something like whats in the picture linked above is right up my alley.

I doubt the data has been saved, and rolling back graphical upgrades is probably impossible at this point.

Look at old footage and screenshots to get the feel of it. It felt and feels good. Cool

Nope, I just listened to CCP Hellmar talk about the early days of EVE and want to experience that simpler low-tech version of EVE for myself.

EverQuest as well. In fact they just made one officially recognized:

https://www.everquest.com/news/project-1999-daybreak

edit: Changed to show only one specific server has been recognized, not in general nor the actual server software.

Lookie, I found where to edit my Signature!

Do you realy want a game that has used 12 years ti support the number of players we have, to let us all jump on the servers used at launch (software atleast, most likely cant take advantage of most hardware improvements either)

We are talking soul crushing lag, no tidi or modern super servers to run it (they are not cheap and would be used for live/test server only)
