Stale launcher

I usually leave my launcher open and log in when it asks me to reauthenticate. I don't have any compelling reason to do this other than that I swap characters so frequently that the last time I log out for the day, I usually forget and just reuse it the next day. Sometimes, though, there was a patch, and the launcher will happily launch the game, just to tell me it's an incompatible build.

Would it be a lot of work to add a little visual cue in the launcher when it knows that it'll be downloading a patch on the next run?

Would it be a lot of work to click the box with the "X" in it, just once, when you're done for the day?

Seriously. Roll

No, but it's even less work to just keep it open until the client itself tells me there's a new patch.

The launcher makes you re-authenticate once a day anyway, so why is it too much effort to close it when you're done?

The problem isn't in re-opening it. Indeed, it's only a couple of clicks.

It's that to find out that you have to do it you first launch the game, go through all the loading stuff, just to be told to sod off.

Even better when you first have to re-authenticate, launch the game to find out there was a minor patch, close the game (clicking the tiny "yes, I'm sure I want to exit" button), close the launcher, authenticate again, then launch the game again.

Spoken like someone who uses a single account only on a daily basis. I re-authenticate on Saturday afternoons usually, as I have to switch accounts a couple of times per day anyway, except Friday evening which is EVE-free.

And no, closing the launcher after every use is not a good alternative. I like having the launcher logged in and ready with my combat main, in case there is a sudden CTA. Not having to restart the launcher (with its "checking client integrity" stuffs, and the transient issues with CCPs login server) saves quite a bit of time.

Yes, this problem doesn't affect many users - only those who use multiple chars or accounts frequently. But it's very irritating. And the solution of simply checking the version string when clicking "Play" or "Login" should be a matter of a dozen lines of code.

Come on, don't be that guy...

Just close it when you don't play EVE...

Oh, how horrible it must be for you to have to go through all those clicks. Clicks that can be avoided entirely by the simple action of closing your launcher when you're done playing every day. It's not rocket science to figure this out.

As for my game usage, why should that matter? The fact that I run 10 characters spread across 4 accounts is entirely irrelevant to the fact that your problem will vanish by merely closing your launcher when you're done playing every day. See the trend here yet?

Right. Done playing every day. Let me guess - EU or US timezone, right? The people for whom DT is usually when they work or sleep. This might surprise you, but some people have DT (and possibly patches) during their prime time.

And isn't the entire point of the launcher to not to have to do that? If this was supposed to be just a glorified patcher, then CCP wasted waaay too much time and resource on it.

And I do see 1 trend in EVE - the so called "war on clicks". If you're happy clicking away - please, enjoy yourself. But if CCP can save quite a few extra clicks by - your words - "the simple action of closing your launcher" - then why wouldn't they do it for me?

Just check the server once per day and, if there's a fresh patch, restart the launcher (or something smarter). A timed, dumb task that computers excel at, and people hate. If you love doing things manually - good for you. I like it when automatable tasks are automated.

Yep. I double click my shortcut every time I go to log in, and the old login screen you can still reach using the exefile tells me if the client is compatable. When it's not, I boot up the launcher, let it update, then close the launcher and run the exefile again. Oh, it's so horrible not having any issues at all with the launcher. It's so horrible having a nice, easy way to login multiple accounts. It's so horrible to not have to deal with CCP's habit of half-assing their "latest feature" and having to join all the whining about how stuff needs to be fixed because I don't want to use the work around.

Roll

Seriously, why does anyone use that piece of crap they call a launcher to do anything more than update their client? It doesn't need fixed. It needs bundled up with WiS and thrown in the rubbish bin.
