I was trying to build up my Caldari Faction standing to lower broker fees in Jita and I noticed over the last few days I have taken negative hits to my faction standing with the Caldari faction. The only thing I did was run distribution missions for Gallente. I don't do any security missions. Is this causing a decrease in faction standing with Caldari? Well the reason given for the hit is "Derived Modification"

The only other thing I have done was go ratting and killing Serpentis a few times. I don't think this would affect my Caldari standing however?

I am a trader and wanted to increase my standing with all corps and factions so this is a little confusing.

Ok i just checked and the same exact time I took the hit with caldari was when I took a hit with serpentis. So me killing a few serpentis rats made me lose standing with Caldari?

Ok did some more checking. I did a mission called Amphibian Error for gallente, however I don't recall doing this mission. I got a 7% boost with gallente but I don't think it was a storyline mission as I cant remember doing it. The other hit was for doing the mission preparing for war. That is a mission you get after completing 16 missions. So now I am really confused.

Caldari and Gallente are opposing factions, as are Amarr and Minmatar. Whatever faction you gain with one, you lose half of that with the other (and -20% to their ally).

It is possible to keep the Gallente happy. One example, Sisters of EVE actually like Gallente, and are only slightly miffed with Amarr and Caldari.

Another way is to do the Sisters of EVE epic arc, Blood-Stained Stars, every three months, and choose a faction to fight for. There is no faction loss here, just a big faction gain.

Shooting faction NPC ships will cause your faction standing to plummet rapidly. Structures are even worse.

My shadow alt has no player faction standing at all, yet 9.63 standing with Caldari Navy. He behaves himself (declines all missions that would change standing). I don't behave, but I try to keep Gallente and Minmatar above -2.0

Amphibian Error is a storyline mission

This explains the relations between the factions and how the derived standings are determined:

As explained, if you show info on the Caldari State you will see that they kinda hate the Gallente Federation, and viceversa.

So, storyline missions (which give you standings with the entire Caldari State) will lower your standings (a little) with Gallente, Minmatar, and everyone else who hates the Caldari.

Train the skill Diplomacy from the Social group to offset this a little bit. Matter of fact, look at the Social group and see if the other skills may be useful to you too, as they adjust standings.

Lots of good advice already mentioned here I just want to add as I don't think it was clearly stated that doing epic arcs is free faction standing in that you get no derived faction standing hit from opposing factions. However you can only run those I think once every 3 months or so. So you might want to consider running all 4 of the level 4 epic arcs as often as possible.

Like others have said if you train up the social skills and run both caldari and SoE you should be able to get cladari higher and keep Minmatar and Gallente positive.

You should double-check the corporations you're working for, Gallente and Caldari share the same general space, to the point that the Caldari homeworld is in a primarily Gallente system (the reasons for this are in the lore, essentially the Caldari were once a member state of the federation that split off because the feds wouldn't let them go 100% space Hitler and racially purify everyone).

So you have to be very careful if you're working for multiple quest-givers that one of them isn't the wrong faction, sort of like how if you're Minmatar there are often nearby Amarr missions.

Edit: apparently the filter **s out most words referencing a certain popular central european political movement from the 1930s, despite the fact that all four of the Empires have major sections of lore that are direct allegories of it. I'm amazed I've played this long without noticing that.
