OK. I live in the USA. Im up late enough that I am seeing only Russian in local. this as happened forever.

Fist off.. Im primarily an EVE player, not a forum troll so if this needs to be moved so be it. I'm sorry If I chose the wrong place and I thank any mods. The last language gap thread I read was here, so Im just guessing.

However.

I remember someone talking about having Google translate implemented into chat, wich was a novel Idea but just can not work. However what I'm seeing in chat has made me think of something. We should be able to list our country of origin and language in our bio or character sheet so when other EVE players look us up they know right off if we even speak the same language let alone are anywhere near the same time zone. Or at very lest a list of known real world languages.

I dont know how many times I have messaged someone and revived no response just because they dont understand what I am typing. I love EVE for its diversity but its more of a problem really. IDK, maybe CCP might feel the need to change it a little to fit lore. Create a game names sub-class for languages, IDK. But something like this would really help a lot.

We can (though I haven't yet), and some players do state nationality (through graphics) and languages known.

Isn't that one of the points of the bio?

You can type literally any text you want into your bio. What's stopping you from sticking "I'm from the USA" in two or three languages and character sets?

You say this is not a troll-thread.

Okay.

Why does it sound like you didn't know everyone can do that already if he wishes to?
It sounds like you want to make it mandatory ... I can not agree to this.

And everyone else just has to type it into his bio.

Hmm. I suppose yes. You could type it in your BIO. Problem is that most people over the years have made that a thing where you type some random crap to define your personality. While at the same time using it as a notepad although you really shouldn't'. Ive actually done a bit of both. I should remove the security status part. but at the time, having it there. I thought it let people know what I do.

This is the unedited BIO from my main as of typing this.

I HEAR VOICES IN MY HEAD

#3 doesnt seem to like you for some reason, but one of the six might, ya never know.

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

PEW PEW!!!!

Players with -2.0 or worse will be attacked in 1.0 systems
Players with -2.5 or worse will be attacked in 0.9 systems
Players with -3.0 or worse will be attacked in 0.8 systems
Players with -3.5 or worse will be attacked in 0.7 systems
Players with -4.0 or worse will be attacked in 0.6 systems
Players with -4.5 or worse will be attacked in 0.5 systems

Not a troll thread? WTF? why would it be?

Making it mandatory? You could always just leave it blank.

There should be a mechanic letting us know that a player we contact may not speak our language since this is a world wide game. It should also be on a list that asks you to enter such information making it common. The BIO is just there for the hell of it.

Random crap to define your personality? In people's bios? I'm offended!

Okay but again ... the thing is that people already can do this.

Also there are a few things wring here.
A bio can be used for whatever the person feels like.

Saying "it's not intended for that", whatever "that" is, is silly.

Think about it this way.

If people wanted to do this, they would already.
Everyone can do so already. Your idea would change nothing.

Instead of having this change,
which adds nothing that can't be done already,
I suggest asking people instead.

What is the reason you want this information about the players?

I have had many (sometimes hilarious) conversations with people not well versed in the English language, or not well versed in my own native tongue for that matter, using Google translate.
Translations do not have to be perfect to be quite understandable you know. For example, I will not lightly forget the Russian guy who stated 'I shoot you boat in face mother breeder!'. I laughed so hard I woke up my wife. The time it took me explaining to her was well used by my adversary.....Blink
Suffice to say we had a badly translated conversation afterwards in which we both had a laugh and we parted on friendly terms. That's EvE!

It is an international game, so I do not want to confine myself to only talking to people who do speak languages I speak as well. I try to talk to everyone.

Same here tbh , numerous times in low-sec and null-sec have i had talks with 'foes' while using google translate.Allways with people who where russian or from that part of the world and most times i ended up becoming friends with them.Even once in syndicate where i was on my own had this happen and in the end a russian Alliance invited me to their chatchannel and intel channel .Best drunken fleets i had where while aiding them or them aiding me in pvp , couldn't understand a word they said on teamspeak though , someone needs to link me to a teamspeak translator one day Blink.

We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid.

I was gonna say, half of the fun is shooting at them and then running what blows up local through the translator.

Come hell or high water, this sick world will know I was here.

I remember doing incursions with a Russian fleet once. They kept typing "тут". This means "here" I think? I guess maybe it was the logistics saying this while aligning at the gate every site, signalling that they are at the keyboard and ready. I dunno it was a while ago. Anyway, the whole time I was frantically looking up the things they were saying and trying to figure out what they mean and how they sound and apparently "тут" sounds like "toot". toot! toot! toot! Fleet of Ruskie trains aligning down the track.

I remember stealing from a Russian and he called me a rat. Or that's what google said he called me. Not sure how this is supposed to be insulting. Typing Russians taunts into google image search is... interesting. Not very helpful to decipher the meaning. But neither is google translate sometimes. Google translate doesn't handle slang and expressions well.

Another Russian I stole from started calling me fat when he found out I was American. But I can eat all the American cheeseburgers I want and my metabolism will utterly annihilate them. I WISH I could gain some weight. But I took the opportunity to fire back with stereotypes in kind. Drink vodka from a bear's butt you Russian potato, I played yer mum like a balalaika last night!

Playing at stupid hours and not being able to properly communicate with people is the best. It feels kinda like Star Trek. I like to think of Russians as Klingons.

I love you, Ruskies. <3

well english is the language of the world so there are few people that are not able to get their point across in english.

in my own experience when someone keeps typing to me in a foreign language it's mostly insulting stuff which is hillarious sometimes when you use google translate :)

and for these moments this site will help a great amount:
