Checking shared resource cache

So you made downloading the game faster the first time but then added a slow process of "Checking shared resource cache" every time the game is patched, is this supposed to be a worthwhile trade off?

Define slow because progress bar on my launcher just blitzed from left to right so fast I barely noticed.

I can confirm. I have a separate internal 7200RPM Hard Drive where I've installed EVE. It can take almost 5 minutes to check the shared cache. I'm usually fairly patient and figured the delay was either special to my computer (which I keep absolutely lean, mean, and squeeky-clean) or that the launcher hadn't yet been optimized as it is fairly new.

Note: I've only tried this after a fresh boot of my computer (Happens once per-day), then launching the EVE launcher.
I have not tested closing the eve launcher, then re-starting the launcher to see if takes a while.

I don't think it *always* takes a long time to check everything, but I can confirm that when it does, it usually has nothing to update. I'm guessing its a check to make sure game files haven't been modified. If there are updates, it seems to figure that out rather quickly and starts downloading/patching promptly.

It takes me 10-15 minutes extra to get into game with every patch, even the hotfixes that are 50mb.
I even have eve installed on a SSD with good hardware so is there anything i can do to make sure mine is faster?
Maybe i should try a clean reinstall.

Launcher all the sudden won't work for me. The progress bar is grey and it just sits there. It refuses to speak to ccp and re-installing the launcher doesn't work, had to start using the exefile.exe to play.

The launcher needs its own version of the repair tool cause the repair tool does not effect the stupid launcher.

Edit, just now I went to shared cache folder and deleted the 2 1kb files, some kind of indexes, that were not in the resfiles folder and the launcher now works.

Have you tried defragmenting your harddrives?

Not the plain windows one,
but programs like Smart Defrag.

It's actually good. :)

Just a thought. We have no idea how CCP handles the files,
so some people with harddisks might suffer from slow performance due to fragmentation.

I thought thought there wasn't much point to to defragging SSDs?

*checks* .... *facepalm*

yeah I jumped over the OP mentioning his SSD.
I'm sorry ....... it's a very, very, very long week this week ... and it's only tuesday. :/

Still, for harddisks it might be of some use ...
... otoh if it's slow on SSDs then it's no use .......

.... **** ... I'll see myself out!

I have this weird thing...

I open the launcher and it's stuck on 0%

Then kill it and open again and then it updates.

I'll double-check defragging tonight or tomorrow as it should be automated.

IMO there is no point keeping "Download all resources" enabled in launcher at all times.
Once you downloaded all files - uncheck it so the launcher wont do any long checks.
Then you can update your cache manually from time to time (e.g. major expansions) with "rescache.exe download" command.

Now *that* could be a potential reason why it takes so long to scan.

I run both the live and the test server on the shared cache. I reckon I could disable downloading all files on the live launcher, but keep it enabled for the few times I log on to the Test server.

I have Eve installed on a 5400RMP drive, and it takes seconds for it to check the shared cache. It takes longer for it to download the background image for the launcher, than to check it. And I do have download all checked.

In short, I think there are issues on your end beyond the Cache.

Hmm... checked my launcher:

- Normal launcher: "Download all the resource files." was unchecked. I left it as such.
- Sisi launcher: "Download all the resource files." was unchecked. I checked it and it downloaded about 250MB of files.

I'll keep an eye on things to see if the cache checking takes a few minutes again... or see if there's some other pattern.

Although it's unlikely that it's the issue ...
... automatic defrag on windows only really hits when you are afk.

I don't trust it at all and always do manual runs with SmartDefrag.
