Question about aligning and orbiting two different objects

Is it possible to be aligned to one object while orbiting another object? I have not tried it so I have no idea what would happen.

alinged means you are pointing towards an object, orbitting means your are traveling around an object, so in theory its impossible with the mechanics

Think about it . . .

How could you orbit one object while travelling towards another?

In theory, aligning does not mean you are travelling to it but you could just be pointing to it. So in theory, and why I asked is that you could orbit an object while pointing at something else.

well it is kinda possible, sort of like a car drifting around a corner, its nose could be aligned in one direction but at the same time traveling around an object.

No in both cases.

To be "aligned" to an object in EVE you must be moving directly towards it.

hense why i said with the mechanics in my first post ;)

Sorry, but you are completely incorrect. Mechanically speaking, there is no such thing as "pointing toward" something in EVE unless you are also "traveling toward" that object.

The visual effect of having your ship pointing toward something while stationary has no mechanical significance.

If you are not moving, you are no more "aligned" to something than you would be if you were facing in the complete opposite direction, which is why the "align" button works the way it does. ;) See sideways-warping capital ships, etc.

I suppose one might be very briefly aligned to another object while in orbit, provided the object lies on a tangent to your orbit. I'm not really sure how this "theory" would interact with the one-second server ticks. It would probably be a very, very rare event that you would manage to instantly get into warp, but I suspect you could at least do it almost as quickly if your timing were good - maybe within a tick or two.

I was referring to reality, not an EVE mechanic. It is not possible in EVE apparently, but in reality you can be aligned to something while orbiting something else.

Yes and it happens all the time. Just click 'approach' on your FC-anchor as he's orbiting something. Presto! Aligned to your fearless FC while orbiting stuff.

Technically referred to as a conga line.

Make space glamorous! Is EVE dying or not? Ask the EVE-O Death-o-meter!

Warp drive isn't possible in reality.

Why is warp drive relevant, you ask? It's not. And neither is the 'real' definition of alignment.

It's possible for about 10 or 20% of your orbit where you have the 3/4 required speed in the direction of the thing you want to warp to, which is what 'aligned' means.

You don't necessarily have to be 100% perfectly pointed at your warp target to be aligned.

(Of course, this assumes the orbit command didn't do something stupid, like bring you to a dead stop then slowly begin an orbit perpendicular to your original trajectory instead of an actual logical course correction.

in your theory maybe, but this is EVE. there is no other direction except the direction your ship is moving. wherever the bow of your ship is pointing at has no meaning except visual aesthetics.

I am so glad we have a relevancy expert here. I'll be sure to run every sentence I intend to write here to make sure it is relevant enough for you.
