If Dust/Legion were MMORTS instead of FPS

would you/would it:
prefer it?
collide with EVE's design philosophy?
be again too niche?

I wonder if CCP ever considered making a RTS or even a turn-based game connected to the worlds of New Eden.

it would be boring as victory will be determined by the size of one's army.

There is already a RTS version of EVE. It is called FCing.

Except your units don't always follow orders.

Also Dust wouldn't have failed so horribly if they'd have just put it on PC.

You mean your units are real humans and not soulless programs that follow a certain routine when given a specific output? That's like, the most realistic RTS out there mang. It shows you that APM and specific build orders aren't the way to victory.

Post with your NPC alt main and not your main main alt!

Some of us are already putting time into Dust 514 now to build the SP we will need if / when CCP finally does deliver on half the concepts and does, indeed, make it "One Universe, One War".

The Proto-stompers have already proven that sheer numbers are not all that are required to win.

I believe, if a squad (or group of squads) works together regularly, they will gain the group synergy required to support their alliance goals.

Without a cluster-wide presence and effect, and a truly interconnected economy, I don't think it will ever gain critical mass.

This same presence and effect will also be required to take Valkyrie beyond it's current flash-in-the-pan excitement.

It actually depends on the game. I would enjoy a quality RTS and dislike a bad one. Regardless of the setting.

I'd love an RTS! Played the **** out of Supreme Commander!
Command & Conquer! Dune! Empire! (sheesh, I'm old! lol)

Gotta agree with the EC guys on this one: MMO and RTS don't really go together that well (yet). What they provide as a solution looks more like two games to me though.

EDIT: Also MSORTS, etc...

I'm playing FPS on PC since Q3A and I'm just waiting for Project Legion. I couldn't care less about FPS on potatos.

I never quite understood why CCP opted to make Dust an FPS.They were never going to succeed at capturing market share off the big studios. Also, EVE players are supposedly older, so one would think we're more likely, as a group, to look out for games that require mature and methodical reflexes What?

Having said that, some RTS games are a bit twitchy too. Cartoony Starcraft-style RTS games are all about APM and build orders so that wouldn't make a good model. However, something like Supreme Commander with epic scale maps and massive armies would be more appropriate for EVE: Games like that actually deserve the 'S' in RTS.

I was sad to see them going down the FPS route with Legion. Why not adopt a 3rd person approach? I'm currently working my way through Pillars of Eternity (Baldur's Gate type 3rd person party-based RPG). If CCP made something along those lines I'd certainly play that - investigating space ship wrecks and infiltrating asteroids instead of temples and ruins. With a party to manage (lead PC and 5 NPC support) there would be more demand for equipment so the market would be more active. I would imagine that developing isometric maps is somewhat easier than 3D landscapes. I guess it might require a bit of work to get the multiplayer element working, but I'm sure it could be done.

I think I love you (Or just your avatar). I can't wait for the new C&C when EA finally gets off their butts with the franchise and gives us a good Generals sequel! Never played Supreme Commander though, I suppose it's so cheap I could try. Then there is always SC II which I have sitting around but hardly have played through yet.

And EVE RTS would likely be amazing since EVE itself is already strategy based for the most part. I think that is something CCP would excel at creating as long as they made a very solid and responsive engine to handle the game and online matches!

That's too bad. Cause Legion's never coming out.

Supreme Commander is cheap!
And it's awesome!

Buy it.
Try it.

I remember playing Generals a lot. It's not "real" C&C,
which I have rarely played against real people *sad panda*.

It will probably run on DOSBox now.

CCP - Building ant hills and magnifying glasses for fat kids

Not even once

EVE is becoming shallow and puerile; it will satisfy neither the veteran nor the "WoW" type crowd in the transition.
