Why would I undock......

If I knew there was a fleet out there to kill me? I wouldn't you all say, it common sense. So then, considering this is a advanced universe. Shouldn't there be a simple button in dock to click, giving you access to a camera view outside. Could be as simple as a static cam location that you could move around. Or as complicated as CCP wants it to be to include your personal Overview settings.

If this has been addressed in the past, then this is here to remind you to look into it. Will it limit fights.... maybe, but if I know there be hostile outside then I will come out fighting vs coming out to be next boring wreck.

Edit:
Risk vs Reward is the argument, with the undock mechanics in place of 30sec immunity.

So what does the dock camper Risk? They sit there watch you undock, maybe in the ship they will gank maybe in a shuttle cause 'you just looking'. Watch you redock, Oh so now they know your ship, know that you are looking at undocking and every one is on standby. The minutes of sitting gonna pay off.... what little risk.

The undocker, wondering, why he didn't get books, doesn't have a alt or ally to do a cloaky look at the dock exit. Should he buy a ship, refit this one. Will he have enough to take on the one ship out there, or have the numbers outside increased.

From this, no risk on the dock camper, all on the undocker.

Now, what if the undocker could look outside, say throu a window. See the ship(s) out there, setup a ship for the fight or flight. And then come out ready for the fight. The undocker still has a risk, but the risk level for the camper has been put on even ground.

Or you guys gonna complain some more.

Undock , ctrl space, blow razberrys at the campers.

Dock when you get yellow boxed.

Provided that the only command you give your ship is "stop" you have immunity for something like 30s (could be less , I'm not sure)

No need. You can undock and be invulnerable, see whats going on, and re-dock if you don't like how it looks out there. The tiny bit of effort required is for you to know if you are in a 'kick-out station' (a station with a very shallow docking perimeter based on it's shape and how the game calculates docking range) or not.

Yes there is a need, but they haven't done it for 10 years because ... well I don't know why. It's been asked before.

The work-around is to rely on the invulnerability timer to see what's going on, then dock back in the station before it expires.

Something something risk something something reward.

In all honesty station games are essentially a window you have to fall out of for anyone to hurt you.

Note that there is an important exception that some stations are "kick-outs", and the players undocking are supposed to both know about the ctrl+space thing, the 30s timer thing, and to be able to memorize and distinguish between kick-out and non kick-out models of stations for the 4 respective races, while it's not a documented feature.

Eve is all about such subtle things, actually.

Something something retention something

Instant undock bookmarks make most undock camps useless.

Ctrl-space as soon as you undock and don't hit anything else. youll retain your undock invulnerability, and as soon as the undock timer is over you can redock with no issues.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

I don't understand why you need to ask this.

You undock to have a fight.

Seems like a perfectly good reason to me.

I believe 'Legacy code' is the actual answer.
When you undock CCP has to 'create' your ship entity on the grid. While in a station you don't actually exist as a space entity and there is no code for a 'non entity' to look at a grid.

Unless they bump you far enough out from the dock, that is.

He does have a point for kickout stations though. (although counterpoint "don't you kickout stations you dumb ****" applies as well) Being able to load the station grid for a look around outside while remaining docked does seem like a perfectly logical thing to add to the game.

I always thought the lack of a visual outside the station, and even ship presence intel via sensor devices on a heads-up display was a huge fall down point to the high-techyness of the game. You can jump clone, transfer currency anywhere in the universe with the press of a button, but the station has no clue what's surrounding it.

Pretend it's a 20th Century parking garage and put some cameras in. Use that Officers Quarters big screen for something useful, instead of a glorified toolbar....SCOPE! Looky, the biggest BOUNTY GUY! Inursion 75 jumps away!!

What's outside? Der...uh...hell if I know. I just work here.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

There is no risk/reward to this. If you were chased into a station, you can look at local to see if "they're still there."
It's more of a, "Who's stupid enough to leave station knowing 'they're still there'?"
What reward is there in shooting somebody that stupid besides padding your kill stats?
I'm in the "falls down in the techy feel" camp with this. It just doesn't make sense in a high tech reality that a station would be blinded to its surroundings. That the info would not be available to the "customers" using the station? Preposterous.

Paradise is like where you are right now, only much, much better.

How did a culture steeped in capitalism get so Orwellian in their intuitive sense?

Didn't read the post completely.

But it did make me think that it would be awesome to have the possibility not to load station environment at all, and just have a live view of the outside of the station when docked, with all the normal station UI present as an overlay.

Warning though, some confusion and misunderstanding may occur when you're tired, drunk or stoned and you won't know whether you're actually docked or not.

This is sorta a funny one. We got 'techy' people that say this is a good idea and it is very valid. While 'others' that apparently have found and used work a rounds to this simple idea. But the 'others' seem to be offensive about it. Maybe they have lost ships or enjoy the flawed mechanics for their advantage.

What ever side of the fence you sit, the subject is simple. Why isn't there this option, I for one like it.
