Just how did Jita become "the Hub?"

Was it by design or did it just evolve that way?

BTW, is there a low/null sec equivalent? Should there be?

It evolved that way. More or less due to ease of access to missions back in the day. If it was deliberate it would be a neutral system dead center of the EvE universe.

It used to be Yulai, however CCP broke that trade hub up.

I don't think you can get a trade hub when any hauler is free to gank :p And yes Jita was self creating. Trade hubs are one of those shining examples of sandbox in action imo. No silly auction house building, just a station that players picked. I'm glad it didn't have an unwieldy name...

3 Regions Joined within 1 jump of each other (Jita in The Forge, Muvolailen in The Citadel, Sobaseki in Lonetrek)

Network Effect (most commonly noted and also known as network externality)

Bandwagon Effect (also known as Social Proof)

Hotelling Effect (also known as Location model, Salop’s Circle Model, etc)

A large percentage of players are Caldari and live in Caldari Space nearby Jita. This is mostly a legacy effect- for a long time, Achura characters had more desirable attributes than most other bloodlines, and prior to that Civire were seen as a somewhat "better" choice for combat pilots and Deteis were popular as industry characters, combined with the early Raven's general power as a combat and mission-running vessel.

Player's Broker Fees, can be reduced with Faction standing and Corporation standing vs. the particular Jita station owner. (Caldari Navy, & Caldari State)

Jita has 6 stations that provide Science and Industry Manufacturing slots (50 spots each station)

Jita has many stations that provide reprocessing facilities.

Jita has Caldari Navy Loyalty point stores

Jita used to provide missions, but no longer does (in order to help keep lag down).

Jita used to provide mineable asteroid belts, but they have been permanently depleted by player over-mining (as decreed
by CCP) - another first for Jita.

Copy n' paste ftw.

It's sort of a social perpetuum mobile.

Once it was put in motion as a hub, if there is no other interferance than the current environment - it will continue to grow.

All it needed was the best location at that time. Now people just go there because of the gravity of money. You can sell everything in jita. You can buy everything in jita. Thanks to those two things and the amounts of liquid isk in that 4-4 station - there is no reason why one should not use jita 4-4 if he's new or old.

Naturally there are still other smaller hubs, but those are maintained also by the laws of the market (better to buy more expensive here and instantly grind more isk than go a long way, get back and effectively after the time - be with less money) and the social aspect of people being lazy as **** and not wanting to go more than 2-3 jumps to get their item.

The "super-highway" gate system that led from empire to empire used to be arranged such that to travel from one empire's space to anothers, you HAD to go thru a system called YULAI.

That let to a huge market there.

It also led to huge lag problems.

Imagine all the jita shopping traffic, and then add to that every pilot that wanted to go from 1 empires space to anothers.

Horrible.

So CCP re-arranged the superhighway.

The big marketeers in eve at the time got together, scouted out places, and collectively decided to move their operations to jita, for various reasons. At the time it had vast ore belts, and level 4 - high quality agent missions. The agents and ore have been moved .. I think? ( I don't go to jita much .. .and I certainly don't hang around to sight-see when I do. )

It still has a huge number of factory slots, and a decent number of laboratories.

It also did and still has a fair bit of travel-thru traffic... it's on the way to places.

When they big folks moved their, the smaller folks followed, and Jita was born, completely of the players.

lol, didn't know that. I'm pretty sure it wasn't always that way. In fact I think autopilot didn't used to have the avoid function, or maybe it just didn't work very good at first.

Of course autopilot wasn't put in untill towards the end of open beta so... ( people used to pay much more for courier services before autopilot existed, I can tell you that! )

Jita also used to be unavoidable if you were going in certain directions. The gates surrounding it have been re-arranged, so now there is literally no reason to go to jita unless you want to go to jita.

One of those little not-so-obvious things that makes EVE the awesome game that it is. Players built Jita into what it is today, and CCP has simply worked to try to make it function more smoothly.

As an earlier poster stated it used to Yulai. CCP didn't like the idea of a central hub, so they removed alot of the stargate access to Yulai and the market slowly died there.
Hence the birth of Jita which was now the most accessible central system.

CCP then hired economists to analyze their game and they told them that market hubs can not be curbed no matter what you do, because it's simply human nature to form them and this games very premise is to encourage freedom!

Santa Cluas was travelling through jita when someone suicide ganked him. Once people heard that news they showed up to loot his bag of toys and goodies, then posted them for sale off of the jita station. That is how it started.
