Mouse pointer freezes, PC becomes unresponsive

This is an issue with EVE that's only started happening fairly recently. Occasionally I'll notice slight lag with the mouse pointer in game, but almost every day now the pointer will suddenly freeze and my computer totally locks up. Ctrl-alt-del doesn't work, I have to hard reboot it.

The odd thing is that the game itself doesn't freeze up. I see people still chatting away, things continue to move, the music continues etc. Perhaps coincidentally, perhaps not, but this has only ever occurred when I am docked in a station.

The launcher has been playing up recently, not loading properly or completely failing to run after activation, so I don't know if the issues are connected. I've used the repair tool which hasn't helped.

I'm using a wired mouse with Win 7 64 bit.

This has helped me quite well but i am not sure if it works for your system, too.

Thanks but unfortunately it doesn't seem to apply to my system.

It's happened to me twice in the last hour, both times I was in a station.

First guess: Your USB devices might be going to sleep unintentionally:

Start menu -> type "Power Options" without quotation marks -> click on Power Options -> Change plan settings on the currently selected one -> Change Advanced power settings -> USB settings -> USE selective suspend settings -> Disabled.

This will disallow any and all USB devices from going to sleep, e.g. cutting off the power. If you have any USB devices which require this setting to work properly, they might go wonky or produce non-optimal behaviour.

Second guess: you have corrupted system files or drivers:

Start Menu -> type "Command" -> RIght-click on Command Prompt -> Run as an Administrator -> type 'sfc /scannow'

After this runs through, re-isntall mouse and keyboard drivers if applicable (either from the CD which came with the peripherals or the manufacturer's site) or if generic mice and keyboard without drivers, see third guess.

Third guess: You're running a Gigabyte motherboard with 800-series chipset (it's name has "GA-8xx" on it.

Take motherboard out of the case, go to the dealer, swap it out to an another brand.

Thanks Adrie. I did the first two things you suggested, I'll see how it goes.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte but it's a P67.

Can you try plugging the mouse and keyboard to USB 2.0 ports, or use PS/2 adapters and use the designated ports? Although USB is backwards compatible, there are multiple devices and interfaces who refuse to work correctly over USB 3.0 and it's one of the biggest reasons why motherboards are still shipped with USB 2.0 ports (and most cases at least one PS/2 port).

The adapter for USB -> PS/2 usually comes with the mouse and keyboard and are coloured as light green and purple for mouse and keyboard respectively.

Still occurring. It just happened during character creation. I don't have those USB adapters. I've put in a ticket to technical support.

Think I might have identified the problem. Mouse and keyboard become unresponsive again, so I unplugged the mouse from the front USB and plugged it into the back USB port. Hey presto it worked. Can't believe I didn't think of that earlier... Roll

Checked in device manager and the SM bus controller driver wasn't installed. Windows couldn't find the driver so I googled the hardware IDs and found a driver download site. Now rebooted, and fingers crossed.

Edit: bah, it happened again. For some reason the front two USB ports and EVE don't get on very well.

Hi there!

I was experiencing stuttering and serious framerate drops on my machine at home. After doing some research and monitoring Task Manager > Processes, I found that "NT Kernel & System" was spiking whenever I played EVE after the machine woke up from Sleep. This is the process that handles driver interaction, I've yet to delve into what driver was exactly causing it, but this might be something to consider.

You may have a different problem altogether, but thought I would share my debugging findings just in case it's related.

Best,

Sledgehammer.
