Much has happened over the last few weeks and days. Many things have changed. In the rush and haste, some people never had a chance to express their views. In recent days, those who attempted to express their views had them removed, or changed by third parties without consent. Censorship FTW?

Here are our views, opinions, and history…

Regarding BTC Wormhole Groups and History, Part I

Overview: I have read a good deal over the last year, increasing in frequency and emotional tone to a frantic pitch in the last few weeks, concerning myself (DG Athonille), Laura Agathon, and the rest of the wormhole group and our activities. Much of what I have read has been false or distorted, or simply wrong. I view myself as an authority on the topic since I have been involved for a year and a half now, and frankly, many of the developments and decisions in the last year I have had a part in.
History: I was very new to Eve when I joined BTC. I had tired of HS lvl 4 missions and gone solo out to NPC nullsec. I was having a good time and making decent ISK, but admittedly a bit lonely. I saw a frequent miner from BTC, so became interested, as well as looking into other corporations I saw represented about. In the end I chose BTC and moved from NS to Solitude. I lived and grew and learned. I enjoyed the comradery, the tense wardecs, LS adventures (there is a load of ISK to be made in Harner), etc.
Over time though, as happens in large groups, people began to fade off and away. Unfortunately, as they left gaps began to appear in regular operations. Lvl 4 mission running died off [for a good long while]. Mining ops became fewer. Wardecs became endless station spinning. It became rather damn dull. I started to run in incursion fleets and dabble more and more into LS, NS, roaming. As my skills increased I began to venture into those oh so scary wormholes on my own…and BLAM! I was hooked. Finishing a few hours of gameplay running back to Solitude with loads of Arkonor and blue loot – I had gotten a taste and I really liked it.
As happenstance, the existing C4 WH division connected to HS Solitude one evening, and I assisted with a massive mineral hauling OP. That got me names and contact, and I began to ask, “Can I join pretty, pretty, pretty please????” About the same timeframe Laura Agathon returned to BTC, and we actually met up in the WH C4. We hit it off easily enough and found that we were typically online about the same time each day. Unfortunately, that time of day did not often coincide with the predominately EUTZ folks that lived in the C4.
Over the weeks and months ahead, we tried to do what we could. We found hours and hours of idle time – C4 sites cannot be done solo [with our skillpoints] or as just two. Once again, the dullness began to creep in. So we collaborated and argued and planned – we came up with a concept: An easier WH training ground and “Voyager” was born. We discussed our plans with the existing WH group and with BTC management – it was met all around with approval and support.
The concept was to occupy a C2 WH with favorable static exits – we chose C2/LS to give us the broadest reach of soloable content. We purchased a system that had POCOs in place, a starbase and even a phoenix. We figured we could use the phoenix to discourage squatters. We set up shop and opened recruiting – the turnout was surprising! Fairly quickly we had a good sized gaggle running around and getting better and better and we (Laura and I) had been honing what was possible and what was efficient. At the height of “Voyager’s” day we had every industry array available in system and open for use. Members paid the division a monthly rent fee which went to fuel costs and we had set up a number of schemes (PI, loot, industry, etc.) aimed at increasing each player’s income while balancing logistics and risk. On the downside, we started to see that individual solo activity had an upper cap – so we began to plan for ways that individuals and gangs could make more.

Regarding BTC Wormhole Groups and History Part II

With Laura’s help, I then came up with the concept of a C6 operation – a marriage of the existing C4 operation (a few sites run a week and huge industrial efforts) and the C2 “training” (easier class of wormhole space to tackle) operation. With greedy eyes we began to look at C6 space. We poured over doctrines and online posts. We honed our criteria and settled on something that we felt could not only work in the short term, but give plenty of growth for the long term: A C6 system with a cataclysmic variable effect and a C2 static. The C2 would give us access to the “easier” space. The system effect would strengthen a pantheon armor doctrine enormously; one ship would be worth two. The income potential of the C6 would drive expansion and attract recruits, and the per-person upper-cap limit would be pushed far off into the future as a point of contention.
There are only 119 C6 systems. Of that there are only 6 that matched our desired configuration. We watched, we waited, and we searched. One day there was a posting for bookmarks for sale to an empty C6 cataclysmic variable system with a C2 static. I bought the bookmarks in for 400m ISK and parked an alt inside. For weeks my alt stayed cloaked and watching the system for activity and presence. During that time we pitched the idea to the existing WH division and to BTC management. It was an uphill battle.
Towards the end, after weeks of my alt flying around an empty system, I gave up. I brought my alt out knowing I was abandoning the system. The next day after downtime, the C6 I had bought the bookmarks into and abandoned connected to “Voyager,” our C2 home. The odds of that happening are simply astronomical – there are thousands of C2 systems. Laura and I took that as a sign, and doubled down our efforts. A fresh alt was installed in the system and we then began to cast about for investors – one of the largest reasons for not proceeding with the C6 plan was lack of funds – BTC simply did not have them.
The same had been true during our “Voyager” set up phase – Laura and I had to secure investors as well as each personally plex our accounts to provide hardware. We went back to our original investors and secured commitment. We each plexed again. With the funds in hand, with doctrine plans in hand, with eager personnel in both the old C4 group and the new C2 group, we presented the idea again, and received approval. I want to make that completely clear: we had BTC management approval. Tiger was not a Director at the time; Mallinthias was off doing whatever he was doing.
Of course we moved and consolidated operations. I won’t go into those mechanics at this point other than to say that we agreed to have a *divisional* capitalistic model (make profit) and an *individual player* socialistic model. In short, everyone got a slice of the monthly divisional earnings, and divisional operations were set up to make profit. We utilized a BTA holding corporation to aggregate funds and paid out monthly to WH division personnel, to investors, and then to BTC. Yes, BTC received 10% of our monthly income every month. Our estimates showed that a C6 operation with medium staff could achieve over 24B ISK per month simply from running sites. That would be 2.4B ISK for BTC. Our industrial efforts would only add additional percentages to that, and PI possibilities are frankly just silly easy ISK; the output from a P1 or P2 planet can easily overrun your centers in days if not planned and attended to correctly.
We began to make capital ships as well. We have more than ten capital ships now in system, and tens of billions in personal ships and modules. We honed our doctrine through changes that CCP foisted on us; we’re extremely, hmmm, capable now. We continued to expand our defensive capabilities and increase our footprint as well as industrial capabilities. The absolute only reason we do not have super-capitals in this system is this: CCP won’t let us

Regarding BTC Wormhole Groups and History Part III

During times of war, we’ve left out of our C6 system in mass and come back to Solitude to assist. We’ve brought our learned lessons and doctrines with us. At times several of us have donated to BTC – I once flew in 2B ISK worth of ships and mods (PushX rocks) in preparation for a war. We’ve tried to host events (mining here is phenomenal and some of you have seen screen grabs of the moon sized rocks we have). We’ve been open to recruitment and some BTC folks over time have made the leap and joined us. Some liked it, some did not, some stayed, and some did not.
In the last six months though, both Laura and I, and to a shared degree the whole division, had been the target of negative commentary. Notions that “they steal the best pilots,” “they just leech off of us and do nothing for the corp,” or that “they are a burden on the corp” had surfaced more and more. Those are asinine comments; hopefully from my recount of events you each have gathered that much. We strove to open content and growth opportunities as well as gave back to BTC, both regularly and in times of need. Nobody demanded or asked this of us; we felt it was the right thing to do for love of BTC as a corporation and of individuals we’d come to know over time.
The reality was that we could not in good conscious openly recruit people into the wormhole division – they could fly to Solitude and steal stuff. By the same token, they could come into our wormhole system and steal stuff. We were governed (and frankly at times hampered) by BTC’s title and permission overlay. To that end, it seemed reasonable that all recruits to the WH division complete some basic time in corp and in Solitude. There are more good reasons for this being so ~ I am sure you can think of them.
Concurrently, we began to see a steady fall off of activity (player presence) in the wormhole. Real life issues, bored with game, easy PI income, etc. all contributed to a growing atrophy of participation. These things happen and are natural. The lifeblood of a corporation in Eve [or any other game] is fresh faces. I cannot run C6 sites without five bros to rep me up for example. Those five people cannot run the C6 site without me and the four others. See? But with the growing negative sentiment in Solitude, we began to see a slow death for our operation.
Laura and I decided to break off and form a new corporation, going back to our success – the C2 class of space and newbros. We’d stay in the C6 and assist with C6 site fleets, but *also* begin to recruit new folks and get them progressing. Ultimately they’d become skilled enough to join the C6 side of operations. They’d also have enough time with us to develop trust and comradery which are critical. By forming a new corporation, we could tailor our divisions, access, roles, titles, and permissions to secure ourselves from theft. There were sufficient investor funds and in-system built capitals piled up to pay us a reasonable settlement amount, so we broke off. It is important to note that we remained on good terms with the BTC division still present, and had understanding of why we were moving on and long-term cooperative support.
In the final months and weeks of this history, BTC politics began to become quite negative. Although Laura and I had asked for permission to move off and form a new BTA corporation throughout the last year, it was repeatedly turned down. We heard from numerous Solitude denizens that activity was dead, management was absent, and to be blunt I was vocal about that as well. When Raven took over as CEO, a vote was put out to BTC as to whether the WH division should stay or go. In the end, Laura and I decided to go of our own accord, and we formed Nothing on DSCAN. As we left, we asked that as part of the settlement of the ISK owed us that the POCOs be transferred to NoD. The reason was simple: BTC enjoyed a 0% tax rate on the POCOs, which would continue unchanged, however NoD could use a small tax rate on its members to help supplement an SRP (ship replacement fund).

Regarding BTC Wormhole Groups and History Part IV

Different from the BTC WH division, which you’ll recall I wrote was socialistic at the individual player level, we felt that NoD should be purely capitalistic. Our members would keep what they killed – loot, salvage. This distinction we feel is critical to driving participation. Fleet members as well would receive a share payout. This put us in the position of looking for taxation avenues to fund both ship replacement and growth.
After weeks of inquiring about POCO transfer, and concurrent weeks of negative commentary, Laura transferred the POCOs to NoD. In the days following that, Laura was stripped of titles and roles in BTC without a word of notice, or even a decent evemail. We began to hear of pressure from Mallinthias on Raven to make changes; we began to hear of yet more negative commentary regarding us as a group and as individuals. We heard that the whole year of operations was “not run correctly and that we did not know what we were doing.” We heard that the operation should be closed. We heard that NoD should find their own system. We saw clearly writing on the board politic that Raven was being strong-armed, and that our wishes and desires amounted to naught.
I personally had a few contacts with Mallinthias. I have also seen messages from him to other personnel. Those message speak of a corporate desire to enable individuals to create content, push forward ~ a similar overarching sentiment that I share and that has prompted me to invest time, RL money, and effort into what has been happening and continues to unfold.
What has been disturbing to me though, and my unease and distrust only increased daily over the last few weeks, are the unspoken statements. The removal of a director without notice; the strong and non-addressed ugly BTC public sentiment, the wrong conclusions, the removal of WH pilot roles (which governed their access), the out-of-the-blue sudden very large theft of ships and equipment from one of our POSes, the strong-arming of Raven by the sole BTC shareholder (Mallinthias), etc.
My conclusion is that greedy eyes have looked to the C6. I am convinced that a metagame to seize and capture the C6 mass of assets (about 40B) was underway, alongside a plan to take back the CEO role. The public statements do not align with the actions; they’ve run contrary. I find it astounding that a week ago the management consensus was that the operation was a wreck and should be closed down, yet throughout I read messages from Mallinthias that individual plans and operations should be funded and undertaken. Today I read that Mallinthias would repay the WH personnel for the hard assets in space – a full day after their roles were stripped.
…but *not* before we’d managed to move all of those assets to a safe banner… ☺
Conclusion: Laura, I, what was once the WH division as a whole and the individuals that made it up have all acted in good faith, openness, support and kindness. For whatever reason we’ve been met with growing hostility. Perhaps my vocal criticism of BTC management spurred that and tainted our perception. In any case, I’d have wished for a more one on one direct dialog than just simmering disdain and heavy-handed secretive actions.
A point that I’ll insert at this juncture is an assertion that Tiger made recently: “…everyone should be in Solitude; all of us should be in one place.” I agree with you holistically Tiger, I really do and respect that assertion. At this stage of BTC’s life I think that is essential. But! That *also* applies to management being in space with corpmates and it applies to the numerous alts (2.2B recent loss BTW) flying around empire not seen in Solitude in years, or those out in deep NS ~ not just to the fairly active WH pilots.
I chose to be here in deep WH space forging my destiny. I have absolutely no trust in your new CEO or his mechanizations and forked-tongue polite speech. And as the radio show personality used to close with, “…Now, you know the rest of the story.”

Whilst none of the people involved mean anything to me, you have a nice written style and I enjoyed reading your story.

I always find it interesting hearing about the internal politics and schisms that develop within groups.

Good luck to you and your fellows. Perhaps an update every now and then?

Aaaaaaand relax.
