Old Player Returning - 'That Age Old Question'

The forums have always dripped with whines and so I have never cared to pay much attention to it in the past. Upon returning to this game after two years however there appears to be more than the 'normal' amount of whinging attributed towards the effectiveness of autocannons and Matari ships in general.

Before I left I specialised in T2 cruisers and battlecruisers and could use each of the four races with almost maxed skills. Particularly I loved the Curse and the Gallente HACs. I used to roam 0.0 for targets in a small gang or T2 fleet looking for targets/engagements.

Despite having gone Amarr and used 10 days of training, this has largely been invested into core skills to date, it is not too late to change my racial direction since barely any of my skillpoints have gone into racial specific gunnery and spaceship command.

In the 'end game' (if there is such a thing) I plan to train all four races up again anyway but what racial direction, given my preferred ship type/playstyle, would you recommend in the first instance?

Are Matari really so overpowered currently that to go for anything else would put me at a disadvantage from the offset (especially given my relatively low skillpoint count).

Are missiles viable for PvP these days? Are blaster boats still a bit gimped? Do lasers suck?

Or is it all just 'flavour of the month' and theory-whore whining business as usual?

Thank you for your time.

Honestly after the patch subcap PvP is more balanced than it has been in a while. Gallente could still use some tweaking, but all in all I can't complain.

Minmatar are good for many reasons, mostly because they fit very well into the preferred style of small gang PvP. Blasters are actually pretty good now, but as I said could use a bit more. As for missiles, you'll mostly see medium sized ones used in PvP these days with Drakes/Tengus. They're always going to be somewhat sub-optimal because of the travel time, but whatever. Lasers are still good as they have been, and obviously great on they're amarr ships.

To answer the question, by not training minmatar you are definitley not gimping yourself in the long run and you never know what changes will be made in the future. So it's really impossible for anyone to tell you if you don't train minmatar you'll be screwed.

In exact details, minmatar is best for skirmish ops which is what you'll find most of the time not huge battles. Amarr/gallente ships are generally better at brawling while caldari ships like the falcon, drake and tengu find ways to fit in here and there.
In general, you'll find a place in any fleet if you train for any faction but it's not a healthy choice to stick to one.Smile

No.

Some of the best PVP ships in the game are missile ships.

Stick with one race, specialize, and learn to play up your strengths and avoid/work around your weaknesses. Nothing is gained by trying to rush into "I fly everything," status.

Generally used weapon systems and their strengths:
Pulse lasers - Scorch is very powerful and its primary use
Artillery - Massive alpha, used in big gangs and anti bombers etc
Heavy Missiles - Drakes and Tengus, need i say more?
Autocannons - Vagas and Canes works great.

The rest are ok but these are the strongest.

Thanks for the replies all. I'll stick with Amarr for the time being and continue on my T2 cruiser/BC path before training over the other races once appropriate!

Do what you want cause a pirate is free Pirate i'd recommend to move towards certain ships, not races.

No, it wouldn't.

If you have decided on Amarr, I recommend focusing on t2 ships, zealots, curse, absolution, navy slicer. Whilst waiting the punisher, arbitrator, and harbinger will all serve well. Battleships are all excellent in the Amarr lineup abaddon is always welcome in larger fleets and function well for vanguard incursions too.

All races have viable and good pvp ships, Minmatar have just more and are in fact more popular as evidenced by the recent dev blog. Whether you take that as sign of overpoweredness or not is up to you.

By the way, fly what you like. Chasing the fotm is a bad strategy in my opinion.
