So if I want to fit my hurricane to be nano, the primary reason you would do this would be for speed tanking, correct? Or would it be more for kiting and long range killing? I would probably be using it for PvE DED and exploration sites. Finally, would there be some minimum skills I would want (qualify for key T2 modules or minimum speed benefits) that make a nanocane better than an armor tank?

The primary "role" of the nano-cane is that it has no primary role! It's simply good all around. For PvP.

I has the best cap in it's class given that it uses capless weapons, so it can kite with MWD for longer or neut other ships for longer. EHP is good enough, as in conjunction with your neuts, raw dps and dmg selection you can bring down a HML drake 1vs1 relatively potently (given you start a close range fight, equal skills etc). All this "kiting" stuff, requires you having proper dmg projection further than web range, and that's only doable with T2 guns. So T2 guns are nearly a must for the complete picture in a nano-cane. BC 5 ofc is a must, but with BC 4 it's still workable.

It's way softer than the Drake tho, and the dmg projection diminishes the furher you go, so kiting and killing a proper PvP drake is not possible. Probably the same with a T2 Pulse Harbi. It's eigher start a favourable fight when you can close in to your optimal and neut them dry at the same time, or burn away!

Nano vs. Armor:
The armor (buffer) version can fit more tackle and has more EHP, but that means downgrading to 220mm Vulcan instead of 425s. If you plan of fighting in scram range, the armor cane is better than the nano-cane.

When attacking PvE ships, the face melting potential of 425s + the 2x Med Neuts should help you fold most ships - even BSs, with ease, as the tank of most of those ships is most of the times hardened against specific dmg types (so you have to work around that with proper ammo), and nearly all of them are very weak on cap.

Now, If I miss-understood and you want to pve in an cane, doing sites etc yourself...then..it's not the "nano" cane you are after.

Usually people fly it "shield buffer" tanked, so you need proper shield skills, and fit arties.

T2 Invul' and Large Shield Extender are quick skills to learn. Nanofibre internal structure II is also quick to skill for. Likewise rigs. Other than that it's the same gun, prop, neut skills that you would need for the Armor version.
