Grazes, hits, penetrates, what does this mean?

Hello, as I'm spanish I don't know well what these words mean in terminology of fire success, I guess hits and penetrates is good, and grazes is not that good, I mean for using -50% range ammo and plus range ammo, to know what's more effective and when.

So, could you let me know all the nomenclatures of these words and what percentage of hit I'm getting from them?

Thanks,
Vizjerei.

As far as I know, there is no hard value for damage related to those, but it all has to do with tracking.

Misses: pretty clear I think.
Grazes: I'd say about 10 to 20% damage?
Hits: between 50 and 80% damage.
Penetrates: direct hit 100% damage.

This of course completely disregards resistances that your target might have.

There's a nice little table with this information found on eve uni wiki: http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Turret_Damage

It's hit quality, it's affected by your overall chance to hit which is about the whole tracking formula. Without going into details, if your chance to hit goes down due to overall tracking issues your hit quality also goes down. This means that having tracking and/or range issues is effectively a double whammy: not only are you hitting less often, you will (on average) also do less damage per hit, which is explained in game as "glancing hit" etc.

That is when it bounces off the shields, I think it does about 5% damage at the very most, but I can't be sure.

Unfortunately that table seems to be out of date so it doesn't use exactly the same terms.

OP I highly recommend this video on the subject, which every EVE player ought to watch at least once every three months. Big smile

Those are "cool" sounding words. They don't carry any real meaning.

If you want to know if you are hitting a target well... look at the numbers and find the pattern.

I understand how you feel OP and I am a native English speaker. That eveuni wiki post is very helpful but I know that I have seen hits not listed on that list. For example "wrecks" target and some others that I can't think of atm.

I'm not sure why all of this stuff comes from third parties nor why CCP can't have a page here that explains the damage percentage of all the various types of hits.

Because it's not up to CCP to show us the man behind the curtain. All the info we have today on formulas etc us players had to figure out. The "common knowledge" we have all came from massive efforts of testing, discussion, more testing etc etc. Besides, as hit quality has an rng factor to it it's hardly that important to know the exact numbers.

It's their game and their communication with us to let us know how we are doing. If they give us some coded messages and don't tell us what the code is that seems a bit silly. However yes it is up to CCP to tell us WTF they mean. I would not ask someone else what you meant if you said something murky and difficult to understand, I'd ask you what you meant.

As far as not needing them it would be helpful information to have when learning how to pilot one's ship. Maybe for someone like you that has been playing the game for a long time it might not be all that important but to a new player I would say that understanding what those damage notifications mean in a percentage is rather important and useful.

This up to date regarding the numbers and the mechanics, CCP just changed names
Glances off = Barely scratches 0.500–0.625
Grazes = Hits lightly 0.625–0.750
Hits = Hits 0.750–1.000
Penetrates = Well aimed 1.000–1.250
Smashes = Excellent 1.250–1.490
Wrecked = Perfectly 3.000

No guarantee i made the correct correlations ;)

The "quality" is fairly redundant since you have the exact hp of the hit nayway. If you're hits are crap, the numbers are lower. I don't even have quality checked in my log settings.

If brute force isn't working, you're just not using enough.

Please Note: Any advice given comes with the caveat that nothing will be suitable for every situation.
