I'm a new player looking for purpose and income, what can I do?

I'm wondering what I can do as a new player to make myself look valuable to a corp, preferably a large, social one.

I want to be able to make money whilst doing so as well.

Does anyone have any tips that may help me out?

Be active, be eager, be open-minded and be respectful. That is the best way to be valuable to any corp.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

+1 what UaE said.

As for the actual "what can I do in game for a corp?", it'll depend entirely on what you enjoy doing and what kind of corp you're a part of. When you find a like-minded group, they'll be able to tell you what you can do to help out.

Wormhole corporations are always in need of people who fly covert ops and are good with scanning.

Nullsec groups are always in need of newbros who fly tackler frigates or interdictors.

Fly around, explore, mine, do missions, blow stuff up, get blown up, ship spin and more more more....

Take your time to learn the game. Don't get angry if something goes wrong. Find out what it was or ask someone.

And most importantly join a Corp!! All of the above plus a purpose for you are most effective and meaningful in a Corp.

Anything you want, it all just depends on what you enjoy doing. If you tell us what you enjoy then we can maybe suggest some possible paths for you that you can look into.

Also, don't forget a bacon platter. Everyone cool loves bacon platters. That's how you figure out if it's a corp worth joining, by bringing a bacon platter. If they reject it, they're not worth joining. If they accept it and throw a party in your honour, everyone wins.

I've taken quite a liking to scanning, I plan on focusing on that.
Combat doesn't really suit me so much, however.

Where should I start looking, if I want to find a corp that might find a use for someone such as myself?

Wormholes. There is an in-game channel called "Join W-Space" that, while not being a recruitment channel, has a lot of relevant information.

Though at best you will be scanning for both ISK and PvP opportunities, since in wormholes battles are often both made and won by the skills of the corporation's scouts. My Alliance has a policy where the scout who finds the gank target or good fight opportunity will get all of the PvP loot we gain, which sometimes results in rather outrageous ISK/hour figures for the scout who finds the multiboxed deadspace-fit Tengu ball for example.

You should definitely buy a 2006 or older character in the character bazaar and pass yourself off as an expert at Eve.

We've got a guy like that, and boy is he PRO!

On second thought, don't go that route. I don't think it's going to work out for this guy either. :)

Stick with UAE's uncharacteristically sound and sincere advice.

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

Id suggest salvaging for people, i know plenty of people who dont bother with salvage and will allow you have their salvage whilst you work on your scanning skills etc.

Join a large null sec alliance like Goonswarm.

All any null alliance asks is that you show up to PvP to take or defend their sov...this gives your PvP a purpose. You may die in every fleet- but you will do so for a reason. Maybe you hero tackled an enemy fleet in a Dictor. Maybe you held someone up at a gate so your fleet could escape. Maybe you defended their sov. No matter what you're undocking, fighting, living, and dying for something larger than just padding a killboard.

-In return you will get free ships (usually under an SRP you buy a ship initially and fit it to a doctrine standard, and if it is destroyed, it gets replaced with enough isk to buy another. In some cases, like Logi, often replaced with more isk than the cost of the ship so you profit).
-You will get free skillbooks (or at least cheaper) to help you advance.
-You get to sell loot and PvE stuff directly and let someone else worry about shipping it to Jita. For example, in my alliance (part of the CFC) I just sell all my PI to my corp at 10% under jita price. I do not haul it anywhere, I take no risk- so that 10% under Jita is well worth it compared to moving stuff out of null sec.
-Being useful in a fleet, I am usually just handed whatever ship I need at the moment. If I die in it, I just give the owner the replacement isk I get. Because ships are replaced, people will hand you nearly anything if you're willing to undock and fleet up. I have been handed billion isk ships. If I live, I give it back, if I die I just apply to the SRP.
-You get access to the high end of Eve's PvE. I am free to do anything I want in Eve...anything. All I do is fleet up when called- and since my only reason to log in is PvP, it's hardly a 'sacrifice' to show up to fleets. I can not only rat the best systems and Ded complexes- but I can ask for friends to join in and almost always get people to help. Moon mine, exploration, manufacturing...anything I want to do, I get to do in null sec and reap the rewards.
-GS in particular runs training fleets all the time. I'm not in GS itself, but I can join their training fleets.
-not being a capital pilot myself, I get my ships moved to combat zones for me- I usually offer to light cynos for the carriers.
- you usually get paid to run towers on behalf of the alliance.
-when I open the fleet finder, there is never less than a dozen fleets I can join doing anything from mining to bombers to gank fleets. If I create a fleet and FC, I can count on people joining.
-most null alliances will happily support your effort to FC. People will join because even if you welp them all, their ships are being replaced.

Essentially, I no longer have much need for isk at all. My needs are met, I have all the time in the world to do whatever- including not even log in if I don't want to- and all I have ever been asked in return was fleet up and die gloriously. Imagine having a billion isk and nothing to even spend it on.

It completely re-invented Eve Online for me. It gave my character purpose, it freed me from PvE. At this point I do PvE just to check out content, not because I need isk.

Feign being new to the game, ignorant of mechanics but willing to research them, and keen to learn new things and help.

Then, when you are stereotyped as 'the keen new good recruit', try to get leadership roles.

Then steal everything that isn't nailed down and burn what you cannot steal.

I support the New Order and CODE. alliance. www.minerbumping.com
