I really really love your assumption that Low/null-sec and WH = instant death..

I did not say instant death. However, if they spend their time in WH and null running exploration sites, ship destruction and death becomes inevitable as time spent increases.

J'Poll wrote:

Yet, you assume that and push new players into a boring mission grind, next to mining, the worst possible thing to do IMO when you look at how "fun to do over a longer period of time as an activity".

P.s. Love how YOU reply to someone that he assumes that his way is the "right way", yet you are doing the EXACT same thing about your idea...you claim it is the "right way", we say...there are others, like low-sec exploration (More fun, more thrilling, quicker) and then you step on your soap box and start shouting "BUT MY WAY IS BETTER".

I said I "COULD" tell newbs they will get killed in low/null.... If others tell them that missioning is boring and will make them quit. Hypothetical situation. I did not say that I DO tell them that.

I do my best to not push anyone in any direction. I lay out possibilities and them then choose for themselves what they enjoy. In fact, the second paragraph of my OP is:

Quote:
Would I recommend this to new players? No way. I had YEARS of experience in the game, and mission running in general to rely on. I played a LOT of hours. Probably 100-150+ hours over 18 days... but did manage to accumulate about 800 million ISK. More like 1.1 billion ISK after liquidating everything to abandon the account. If I compare those hours to a job to get the $15 to play for a month, that would be somewhere between $0.10 and $0.15 an hour.

J'Poll wrote:

Close to 10 hours a day....GET A LIFE.

With that time at hand, get a job, pay for a sub, have money to spare to dump a PLEX for ISK in game...and still have extra cash on hand to do fun stuff in RL.

For LESS amount of time needed.

I actually have a very well paying job. I'm a software engineer for one of the world's largest software companies. Since we have few engineers in the city where I live, I work from home most days of the week. And I'm very good at it. In fact so good, that I can work for 3 or 4 hours a day and get enough done so that it looks as if I worked a full 8-10. I'm 48 years old, married, my kids are grown and out of the house (save the 17 year-old that doesn't really want to spend much time with me anyway). Being old, I can no longer get a full 6 hours of sleep a night. More like 6. This leaves me ample time for gaming.

But, thanks for your concern.

Dredd, I wouldn't worry about responding to J'Poll as his posts are essential boiled down to the fact that he seems very offended you'd want to post about this, and he's really into the personal-attack mode, which is not normally like him, although his posts lately seem to very short and demeaning towards others.

Eve is a sandbox and however you or any other player chooses to play, or invest your game time within Eve is fine. True, this sort of thing wouldn't be for me, but for anyone that has the time and the mindset to embark on this, good for you.

I can see that you're showing "how" this could be accomplished and you're outlining what it would take.

I do think that it's fairly unrealistic for the average new player coming into Eve to even expect to earn the ISK-flow on an ongoing basis, let alone at the start, to be able to PLEX their account. I think it's important that this is emphasized and that new players should expect that accomplishing this is not typical.

Ooh, that's all fine.

I'm just concerned, EVE is a great game. Hell, in my opinion, it's one of the best games created so far, but would I want to play it for 10 hours a day, no.

I'd rather go out, see friends and do stuff with them and then play a bit of EVE for a couple of hours, just with occasionally (mainly during the big events in EVE) play for a long time.

Which is why I'm rerunning the experiment, limiting myself to 4 hours a day.

Day 4: 45 minutes to finish up the 4th set of tuts, sell off loots/ships and move to 5th. 2.73 Minmitar standings and 30 million ISK + 3,5 million sell orders.

Then Completed 5th set of tuts in just over 2 hours. 3.21 standing, 40 million in the wallet and 4.5 million sale orders.

Trained cruiser to 3 and medium proj weapons to 2 (3 in queue). Battle cruiser and drones are training. Gunnery 4 is in the queue.

Tomorrow would be ready to run L3s in BC, but limiting myself to 4 hours a day is making other things the choke point rather than skills.

Made the decision to skip the 6th set of tuts. I think with SoE epic arc and a few COSMOS, I'll have plenty of standing. If not, connections will help. So, with final hour of day 4, traveled to Amon and started SoE, getting about 10 mission in.

Tomorrow, finish SoE and, hopefully, start some Minmatar COSMOS missions.

Great experiment, this limited-to-four-hours-a-day thing. And kudos: established players replaying how to be a newb all over again, and going against the odds must be trying.

edit: some commentary on why you chose do say, run lvl3 missions, go to SOE missions, or run COSMOS missions would be useful for the true new players who'll read and appreciate this work of yours.

Day 5: Was cranking through SoE epic arc. Then, about 2 hours in I hit mission 27, Burning down the Hive.

I got hit by 3 webs and a scram. rats orbiting at 2K and I could not hit they with my 250 arty. They popped my Rifter. I half fit a new one, and escaped at 23% structure. Missing the destroyer here. The extra firepower to kill the off before they get in range for the webs.

Anyway, I then hit the mission where you're sent to minmatar space. I left the rifter behind and went off to Rens to fit up a Rupture (cruiser): 10 million for ship and 5 million for fit. 4 scout 425, tractor, 3 tracking enhancers, 2 gyros, AB, shield booster. 2 mids will be used for shield hardeners or maybe cap recharger and a hardener.

Going to try to finish SoE in the cruiser. I'll see how it goes.

3 hours game time gone and still working on the minmatar section.

Additional skills:
light drones 2 (3 in queue)
Medium drones (to 3 in queue)
drone avionics (2 in queue)
fuel conservation (2 in queue)
tactical shield manipulation (needed for shield hardeners)
energy grid upgrade (for cap mods)

Still want to work on:
jury rigging and shield rigging
Gunnery 4 for traj anal and ummm... is it sharp shooter?

In the last hour, I finished the Minmatar missions and then the Amarr. Was near the end of 4 hour cut off when I got the long 12 jump mission back to sister A. I accpeted, set dest, activated auto pilot and waled away. Not sure if that counts as cheating on the 4 hour limit.

This morning I saw the dev blog that the career agents are going away. I'll likely try to get onto singularity.

My whole method just got a major hole blown in it. The career agents gave almost 10 million ISK per set, giving the money for skills and the battlecruiser. Also bushed faction standing to over 3, making it pretty easy to get over 5 with SoE and a few COSMOS.

If the replacement new player experience doesn't provide that cash and faction boosts, gonna take a major redesign of the path to PLEX in first month..

Got on singularity. The "Opportunities" (That need about 100 x more info than they have now.) replace the old 21 step In Your Own Time. They end with dumping you off to the career agents. SOOOOOO... the strategy that relies on the ISK and standing from the career agents will still be sound, at least for now.

Day 6, Completed SoE epic arc in about an hour, then relocated to Nakugard to start COSMOS. Spent just a few minutes in plex... enough to realize that auto cannons are not going to work on the rupture (cruiser) for these COSMOS plexes. I need to be able to stay at longer range.

This was Sunday and I went to a play, grocery shopping, dinner with family, watched Daytona 500 on DVR. Only played 1.5 hours.

Day 7: Get to play for 6.5 hours today to make up for only 1.5 yesterday.

Mostly a disaster.
Spent a half-hour fitting 650s, going and getting the Archeology skill book I'd left 6 jumps away. (Trained Survey to 3 yesterday). Didn't have any of the tut supplied probe launchers handy, so had to buy.

Spent about an hour getting
Basket's logs
lagister's tag
angel cartel scanner data
From ontested Minmatar Military Depot in Indur.

Then I wasted time trying to probe out an archeological site in Barkrik. I misunderstood the guide and the site was directly warpable without probing. Arg. Took at least half a dozen hack attempts due to poor skills to get teh sculpture.

Then I did need to probe out the Maru prison in Hjoramold and went to planet 13 to get stuff from searcher drone.

Then I started actually doing the L2 COSMOS missions.
Machine Head: Ekdit spitek Hand over the guy from prison and the drone thingy. Then the worst mission in the history of RPGs. Over an hour of just afterburning across giant rooms over and over again. Not worth the 0.25 increase in faction standing.

Inder, Dream Port Sinogor Nitrut 1st mission half hour, 1 million bounties and half a million reward. 2nd 18 jump round trip, long curier. Bought a thrasher and ran it in that. 3rd hand over angel cartel scanner data.

Nakurgard, Glass edge: Them Burker 1st: 1 jump curier, 2nd Bassket's ship logs, blow up 1 structure. Only a 0.05 standing increase.

So, basically 4 hours to get 3 million worth of implants and 2 million worth of faction ammo. Faction standing to 4.3.

Worst, still a good 5 million shorty of buying and fitting the hurricane.

I'd hoped to start running the L3 COSMOS missions today, but without BC, not gonna' happen. So.... I spend a few mins thinking about what I should do and decided to go for the easiest option. Run the tuts a 6th time.

I kind of lost track of exact play time today with all the running around and having to do real-world work and attend meetings. I may have gone a half-hour-ish over. Just a frustrating day of suck L2 COSMOS missions. Wish I'd not even bothered.

Completed the 6th tuts. Faction standing at 4.68. I've got barely enough ISK to buy and fit my 'cane. i did manage to get gunnery 4, surgical strike to 2, Trajic Anal to 2. Ready to train salvage. Still not gotten shield rigging trained. Mechanics 3 is in que and so is BC 3. Will be another 8 hours for rigging. Gunnery 5 is more than 4 days, then will need battelship. Not going to be in BS until, at the earliest, day 12. So, I have 4 days to make 200 million for maelstrom. With the implants from L3 COSMOS that "may" be doable.

Limiting to 4 hours a day is still a MAJOR crimp in this attempt.

Planning ahead, IF I manage the 200 million in 4 days, then have 7 days to get 800 million. I don't see that doable at 4 hours a day, even if I manage to pull 10 million an hour, 4 hours a day . 10M * 4 * 7 = 280 million. Not even close to 800M. Even if I liquidate assets it won't be close.

EPIC Fail!

8th day, server was down in the morning for extended down time. Then i had to do real-world work all day. Home Owners Association meeting in the evening that went 3 hours. About all I did was travel, buy and fit hurricane, then travel. Took about an hour.

9th day. extended down time again before work. About 2PM I finally got a chance to play. Pulled a L3 COSMOS mission that would lead to a +3 implant. Put some missile skills into training queue so that I could supplement the drones with a single small missile launcher (cane has 6 turrets and 7 high so the 7th high is nice to assist with frig defense).

Instead of waiting for missile skills, I tossed a tractor in the extra high and ran the mission. Room 1 and 2, no problem. 3 of 4 rat groups in room 3, no problem. While letting cap and shields regen, I started looting some items from wrecks that I'd need to other missions.

Well, I didn't watch rat aggro and must have wondered into their aggro range. First thing I know, I'm webbed and pointed. Throw the drones out and start shooting, but I'm screwed. I watch as guns miss, drones are barely scratching the pointing rat, shields are slowly stripped away. Then armor is slowly stripped off as the shield booster can't keep shields up. Then structure is gone quickly.

I got 20 million from insurance, but that leaves me 30 million short of buying and fitting replacement BC.

At 1-2 million an hour running L2s in cruiser, it would take me a week to get back into BC. Then there would be no tie to make ISK to buy a battleship, and then no time to make the 800 million for the PLEX.

HARD FAIL!

Have you considered doing combat anoms and checking asteroid belts for faction spawns? The results may not be as consistent, but you can sometimes get drops worth 100 mil or so. I think I'd rather watch paint dry than grinding missions with low skills personally.
