Approach only works for objects on-grid and <150 km away. Else you either align (celestials and other warpable stuff) or have to manual pilot (ships and such, also :effort: Sad).

On a related note, did CCP remove the autopilot indicator from the HUD/reticule in a recent patch. I remember being able to look down to check if it's on without having to toggle it. Seems like a step backwards in the UI department.

Also inb4 Dark Opaque. Blink

Should be one of the five little buttons to the left of the ship HUD circle thingamahoojit. Along with buttons for scanners and tactical mode, cargo etc.

Press the little << chevrons on the left of the circle if you cant see them

So that's what that big "A" is for. Oops

You may be reading into it too much, it could be as simple as the "victim" stopped the ship while attempting to get out of being bumped.

He doesn't. It's exactly as the OP describes. The autopilot also doesn't get shut down by a tackle or something like that. The freighter is not being aggressed.

The AP is being disabled by bumping the freighter and other certain "preparations". I'm not at liberty to discuss how it works exactly, as it has been petitioned two weeks ago as an exploit, well two exploits actually as conveniently the gate guns are being disabled by this as well.

The intent is to make "hyperdunking" even easier than it already is. Using this technique you can pull any freighter out of AP and hyperdunk it while being in range of the gateguns with the gateguns not firing. You don't have to go through the hassle of "convincing" the freighter pilot to disconnect this way. This is actively being abused for several weeks already and I'd petition any loss that was caused by this.

See I was wondering whether it was or wasn't an exploit. I mean as far as I was concerned the freighter was dead anyways, 100+km from the gate being bumped by an agility fitted Mach, he had two chances and Slim just left town :D

I'm not a freighter pilot and have so far been lucky versus gank attempts (Tengu 4 - 0 Tornados) so it's not like I'm crying about it, just eh...idk, seems icky that gankers are now (ab)using so many mechanics to make it easy on themselves, it's no longer just a gank on a gate as they used to be done:

Grid-fu using MTU's so that they can just bump them <100 instead of 250km

...bumping them off grid (and something else that's a secret and been petitioned?) to make them immobile and out of reach of gate guns...

...manipulating Concord by using shuttles dropped by a Bowhead to draw them off grid every 25s...

...can flipping the loot with a rookie alt so that the actual scooping ship isn't flagged.

It seems like they're running out of friends/easily multiboxed alts to do it the old fashioned way and so making very risk averse gameplay for themselves which is kinda ironic when these same guys keep requesting that CCP reduce the risk aversiveness of highsec...

but what would I know, I'm just a salvager

The old fashioned way was to get enough tank to tank concord and gank while concord were shooting you. Perhaps you would like the game mechanics to go back to that.

Fair point - I'm too young to remember *those* days but have heard of them. And I also understand that an active player with a webbing alt is usually still safe from these nu-skool tricks (with added 420noscopewubstep or something)..

It just seems a bit weak that one person *could* suicide gank an afk freighter on their own using just the single alt if they were sufficiently bored/boring to do so (bump offgrid with mach -> drop shuttles and catalysts from bowhead -> do the ganky dance)

I mean that alone invalidates the whole 1 person vs many that usually gets trotted out versus the carebear haulers when ganking is mentioned (and which I completely agree with)

but what would I know, I'm just a salvager

You can disable autopilot by bumping something offgrid 150km then scrambling their warp.

It sounds to me like there was a tackle ship involved. If the ship is bumped more than 150km away from the gate it will attempt to warp instead of approach. If I remember correctly tackling the ship will prevent the warp and turn off autopilot. I'd need confirmation from seigfried or globby on this though.
