Lesson 30: Always have the right tool for the job. Thinking back to Lesson 29 above, I realized (in hindsight, of course) that I had focused my efforts to pop a few suspect Logis entirely on range or DPS. I didn't have a fast-locking Arty Tornado handy (and I have good skills for one), but if I had, I likely could have alpha'd one or two of their cruisers off of the field instead of just scaring the crap out of them.

Right then, off to go shopping....

I have been meaning to put a rook fit together for jamming out and killing neutral logi. Never seem to get around to it. And now with the new patch coming up, I fear I may have lost my initiative, as everyone will be flying them now :/

That's brilliant actually. You have a pirori knowledge about the ship types involved, so you can pick your jammers to match, and since they're in logi ships you can most likely fit pure gank.

First PvP? Gratz to you for taking the loss onn the chin and still having fun. This game takes on a whole new meaning once you realize that shooting red crosses is only a means to an end!

Hey thank you! Yes, it was the first time that I finally had a fight with other players, living in lowsec it was only a matter of time before it happens.
And yes it was fun, I had some "internal vibrations" even if my options were limited by the time. But I finally launched my warriors against the Orthrus; after all it's better to die fighting than doing nothing. And don't laugh but I was happy to put a single dent in its shield PirateBig smileBig smile.
You are right it isn't comparable at all with shooting crosses, that was really tense and fun.
I saved my main's ship and the pod of my alt, I consider myself lucky. The pod really warp off like an arrow if you align it before to be exploded, I could effectively test it this time haha.
Of course at the end I put the obligatory "gf" in local and had a little chat with the guys, that was cool Bear
The loss is OK, it's just my stupidity to warp back, but anyway like one of the "ebil" pirate said; "**** happens"

You, sir, will go far in EvE with an attitude like that. Props to you for your handling of the situation and your overall outlook on the encounter.

Agreed. Good work Karl Jerr. For your first PVP encounter I'd say you fared spectacularly well.

Lesson 31: All winning streaks come to an end. I'll spare you all the typical dramatic battle report given the nature of the lesson and just say that my beloved Hull Tanked Vexor Navy Issue has finally been defeated. I probed down my opponent with my CovOps alt, and after dancing a bit finally got him to commit. Mad props to Khaan, his tank was absolutely sick. I chatted with him after, and he said that he was sporting a dual-rep active tank that held up under neuting pressure. Very nice.

Note to self: Train Amarr Cruiser V.

Although I can never know his fit for certain, Feyd has a 'blog post about the Sacrilege that spells out in no uncertain terms it's sexiness. If I were going to lose my VNI in any fight that I picked, I think I'd want it to be to this fit.

Lesson 32: If someone is "running" a combat site and not shooting at anything, pause and think if they are baiting you into a trap. Upon some reflection, I realized that this is exactly what happened to me in Lesson 31 above. The guy played me like a fiddle. Like a masterful puppeteer, he got me to think he was trying to get away, warping off the first time I landed on grid with him, when really he wanted to gank the everloving crap out of me.

And I fell for it, hook, line, and sinker.

Lesson learned.

Thanks for knocking me down a few notches Khaan. I had been the one teaching for too long and needed a good schooling.

Lesson 33: Asteroids are a ***** when you're trying to warp off from a fight that isn't going your way.

Boom.

B^/

Lesson 34: Killboards only tell you so much about someone's skill. Take my opponent above for example. I knew that trying to solo an Omen in a Stealth Bomber was a risky proposition at best. Judging by his (previously) entirely red killboard, I figured that worked in my favor.

It didn't.

He never got tackle on me (which he didn't need thanks to the bloody asteroid), but he reacted right away, and got drones on me ASAP. Not the response I was expecting. Good fight sir, and I'm happy to be your first kill.

Lesson 35: A well trained and flown CovOps scout is utterly invaluable in hunting down prey. I could list a whole litany of seemingly solo kills that were really a team effort. My CovOps scout probes down the appropriate target and provides the warpin, and I warp in and do the damage.

Here is the latest example of such a kill. I really like the CovOps/'Ceptor team because even if my target is watching D-Scan, and they're often not, 'Ceptors warp so fast and land on grid so quickly that my quarry often have no time to react.

All the better for me....

Corollary to Lesson 35: If you're going to train a proper CovOps alt, train CovOps to V. It really is worth it.

Lesson 36: You can, at least in theory, ransom people without even being logged in. On multiple occasions, I have found valuable bits of intel on the forums. Little pieces of information that the poster most likely didn't want the general public to know, such as where they AFK mine in a Skiff fleet, or where they are planning on doing epic arcs in nullsec.

On several such occasions, I have contacted said posters and offered to not share their information with other capsuleers in exchange for a ransom in ISK. While I have yet to receive payment for such a ransom, I am fairly certain that with the right information and the right price, such a ransom could be achieved.

My most recent attmept involves a chap running the Angel Epic Arc and asking for advice on how best to smuggle the loot back into hisec. Oops.

Lesson 37: Station games aren't all bad. As I mentioned in Lesson 2, station games come with an associated degree of risk. However, after some Out of Pod stuff started impacting my game time, I started looking for an in-game activity that had a relatively short time commitment and would allow me to safely extract in short order.

Enter the arty 'Nado I purchased after Lesson 30. I took it to Amarr and decided to see what I could do with it. I have a nice set of bookmarks set up, I keep someone nearby to salvage wrecks and (potentially) bump targets, and I've been having some fun taking potshots at assorted folks.

However, the real benefit of this hasn't been the stream of largely skill-free kills that many folks would love to have padding their killboards, it's been in watching others, scanning their fits, learning assorted tactics, etc. In particular, I've become a much better judge of just what I can, and more importantly can't, one-shot with an arty 'Nado.

Playing stupid station games may win you stupid station prizes, but it can also apparently win you some sound ship experience.

Corollary to Lesson 37: Eventually, you still lose at station games. Guy had a set of warpins that happened to coincide with mine. Damned good fight. He got my pod too., which I totally didn't expect. Wow.

Lesson 38: POS passwords need to be entered for all of your ships, not just some of them.

Oops.

Corollary to Lesson 38: Making grand statements about how you learned long ago to always set your POS passwords likely ensures that you forget to in the near future. Yes, I totally did that. Buggar!

Lesson 39: Inaction can speak louder than actions. A local friend in a very small corp lost a pair of POCOs to a 90-ish player corp last night. Fair enough, they brought far more guns, that's how EvE works. Said friend wasn't griping, but he was looking to counterattack. This morning, we (4 pilots total) very casually dropped one of the aggressor's POCOs down to 50% shields while a dozen-ish of them were semi-active in systems 1-3 jumps out, including one in-system with us. To me, this sends the wrong message. It says, "Hey, we're pushovers and we don't like risking ships". Bad form.

If you're looking for a risk-averse corp to have some fun with, then Aurora Armaments may be for you.

Lesson 40: Always use the terrain to your advantage. I stumbled upon some suspect logis repping a POS this morning, and I decided to see how many of them I could bag. They were orbiting the POS, albeit not very quickly, which did complicate things somewhat. I landed my CovOps alt on the field and started figuring out how best to get a warpin.

Unfortunately for me, I landed pretty far off of my intended target. Fortunately for me, an acquaintance of mine had also taken notice of the situation and managed to land his ships much more effectively, bagging two logi cruisers and two pods.

What I realized after the fight is that several of the logis had passed fairly close to POS defensive modules, and had I been paying attention I could have bookmarked one of them and warped straight to it.

Lesson learned.

Lesson 41: Being suspect flagged in hisec, AFK, and possessed of an expensive pod is pretty much the trifecta of fail. Granted, this pod wasn't hugely expensive, only slightly moreso than the T2 logi cruiser that also died in that fight, but still.

Oh i like this thread. Can i contribute? This was from a few weeks ago.

Lesson 42: When you have a ship tackled and you don't need to try and bump it, don't do it anyway. Especially if your internet has been out all week and your eager to get a kill. It might be a trap

Alternatively: When at war with BAW, everything is a trap.

Anyone may contribute, but I'm keeping my numbering limited to my posts. I'm not some masterful teacher or anything, but it is my thread. ;^)

Yeah, station games with mercs are always risky. Station games during a wardec even moreso.

There was actually plenty of warning signs for me, i was just stupid, although it was a very well placed trap.

I knew BAW did login/WH traps, i also knew that the bustard was from the corp they assisted against. That should have been enough for me to keep my distance.

I am normally pretty paranoid about traps because i find it keeps me thinking and alert to things going on around me. Despite what people may think not all mercs always just want easy fights, but we do have a bad tendency to get complacent because so many targets don't fight back.

Sadly for me id had internet issues all week and was itching to play some eve, had just gone up a pipe and hunted a target that remained cloaky for an hour and was about to go to bed, so i got dumb :D

Eve is all about improvement, as long as you are learning, thats whats important. +1 for this thread, i hope it stays alive
