Hi all,

Currently using my Astero to explore, but I'm currently teching up to use a Manticore so I thought.. Would it be better for me to use a Buzzard (t2 Caldari frigate) or to just keep using my Astero?

Corp members aren't sure so I thought I'd ask here.

Buzzard are better for pure exploration, the probe bonus is stronger and the ship is a lot cheeper.

The Astro can fight if needed, if you meet for example a buzzard running a site then you can chace him off.... this will happen rarely if ever.

You use an Astero if you want to hunt other people doing sites.

You use a CovOps if you want to actually do the sites yourself.

You also use an Astero if you lack the skills for a CovOps. But given these skills are fairly trivial, it is in that case unlikely you can afford the 80mil price tag of the Astero Hull at which point you should be using a tech 1 scanning frigate.

Coming from a mining background, I can make more than what an Astero is worth in a day, so price isn't exactly a big thing for me. Heck, if I wanted to go for a Stratios I would, but I don't really see the point in it.

T2 ships is more focused vs. faction, so prob buzzard is a right choice.

SOE ships are basically for low skilled players. Fact. If you are serious about exploring/scanning, go covops and then T3.

Very happy you are rich from mining!

Exploration is a very broad term that covers a spectrum of playstyles. When I first did anything that could be called exploration, I was in a Heron with a prototype cloaking device. I just wanted to see the Titan graveyard at B-R5RB (10/10, would get hunted again).

These days I don't get many opportunities to venture far out, but when I do, I roll in a Stratios. From the sound of things, you're more financially secure than I am; I would highly recommend it. I won't give my fit for obvious OpSec reasons, but I will say that once while waiting out a camp in deep null I saw a guy in a Stratios gate jump, drop a pair of Geckos, and pop a HIC and HAC before chasing off their assault frig support. Then he ran data/relic sites.

In contrary to everything that has been said, I would fully recommend an astero for general exploration.

A t2 covops has almost zero offensive and defensive capabilities and you will be chased of or killed by any newbro in an astero.

The small amount of scan strength you lose and the 3au/s warp speed is nothing compared to feeling secure while hacking.

Unless you're losing a lot of ships I'd go with the Astero. I've never lost an Astero, but I've lost a Buzzard to a battle Helios in low-sec because as the guy told me later, "I knew I had nothing to fear when you were in the Buzzard".

Plus the Astero has more cargo space and can run some DED and sleeper cache sites.

Astero can run dozens of different sites with ease, and can probe down almost anything that it can successfully run also. Not to mention it has the combat abilities to attack other players .

It is all around a better exploration ship than the T2 Scanning frigates.

If you don't follow the rules, neither will I.
