The gate cloak only works if it isn't invalidated either by you moving or by you being within 2000m of any object or ship in space. That means that if you had the misfortune to spawn too close to some object, you don't get a gate cloak at all. Such an occurrence is quite rare but not unheard of. Large and well prepared gatecamps can increase the odds of de-cloaking passers-by by jettisoning objects around the gate, or deploying all their drones and orbiting. The wreckage and corpses of previous victims also can decloak you.

Gate cloak is NOT affected by the 2000m rule.

The cans are there to prvent a module recloak.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I could swear that I have come through a gate only to be instantly decloaked by an object in space on more than one occasion, as well as being de cloaked by drones. Maybe I was mistaken, but I can't see how.

http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Timers#Gate_cloak_timer

This states that the "2000m object within" does not affect the gate cloak. There's nothing as specific on EVElopedia (no surprise there).

https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Stargate#Stargate_Mechanics

This has it as a session change timer or alludes to it being one, which is incorrect. Also that page needs an update in general with capitals being able to use stargates now in low and null sec.

Just out of curiosity, does the gate cloak allow you to reuse the gate back into the previous system without de-cloaking? As long as your in its range of course.

It should never be in range. Which means you have to drop gate cloak in order to jump back through the gate.

Confusion on this one, everyone seems to be thinking you dropped gate cloak "after" jumping through the gate and got killed.
However this section from the OP points to the other side of the gate and that he died as he landed from warp but had not yet jumped through the gate.
"but yesterday I arrived at a camped gate (0.3 space) and, literally, died instantly, both ship and pod, in seemingly one instant."

This offers up two possibilities.

You died immediately after landing but before you jumped through gate.
If so then you had the unfortunate circumstance of running into an insta lock ship with a good pilot. Remember the gate cloak only protects you "after" you have jumped through a gate not when you land on the gate.

If you had jumped through the gate and then got killed the others above are correct and somehow you moved and dropped gate cloak.

Still as tehy say inquiring minds want to know, which side did you die on.
Had you just landed but not jumped?
Or did you die after jumping?

When you jump the game intentionally dumps you in a random spot approx 12-15KM from the gate(IIRC) so you're never in range.
