Hello to all you beautiful Space Commanders, Rear Amirals, Vice Admirals, Full Amirals, Captains of Industry, Dangerously Wicked Space Pirates....the list is long and distinguished...

Ive always wanted to really give Eve Online a real college try and now im finally doing it.
Im reading the wiki and have just started the Tutorial.

I watched a Eve gameplay "uncensored" on youtube the other night and was really moved.

Ive read where it actually take a year to train some skills and it just blew my mind on something that could
that complex and cool.

Anyway. I am just going to try and get thru the tutorial tonight and hope to get into the missions that are PVE and PVP
focused.

I chose the Gallente Federation due to their wild type behavior and also their Freedom Fighter attitudes.

Welcome. Good luck to you.

Here is some recommended reading for you, in particular section 7.

Some things to always remember:

The only way to lose playing Eve is to get angry, they are only space pixels and there is never a reason to get angry. Frustrated? Sure, but not angry. Your frustration should be focused towards asking yourself what you can do better the next time you find yourself in a similar situation as opposed to thinking the game should be different or that it is unfair because a lot of the time it is unfair, but that is by design. Then again, there are many times where it will seem unfair but it was really due to your lack of knowledge about game mechanics or tactics your enemy will employ, one or two things you could have done differently would have saved you. Always convo your opponent after a fight and politely ask what you could have done better, you will gain knowledge and maybe even a friend. Most of the friends I have made started off as my enemy.

Teamwork will always trump skill points and/or isk invested in your ship.

The bigger ship is not necessarily better especially if you are not properly skilled and in many cases even if you are properly skilled.

High Security Space is relatively safer but not in any way safe. It can be argued that it is actually less safe than the lower security space categories as the danger is not nearly as apparent unless you are properly educated about the mechanics of the game.

Many things that seem like they should be something are not necessarily that thing.
Vague, I know, but here is a good example: Dueling

Never fly what you can't afford to lose, this includes the contents of you cargo.

I'm not trying to scare you away, it's just the tutorials don't really give you any idea of what is actually going on at the deep end of the pool, it only shows you the shallow end. For example, I am what is known as a suicide ganker, I live in high-sec and take things from people that don't properly protect them by killing their ship before the "police" known as Concord kill me. The tutorials won't tell you anything about people like me. (That recommended reading link above does briefly mention gankers though)

Most of what I said will not affect you in any major way until you get a few months down the road (unless you buy PLEX) don't do that until you know what you are doing. Buying PLEX to have a good bank roll when you don't even know what to do with said bank roll will 9 times out of 10 lead to wasted isk and disappointment. Build your bank roll slowly and you will learn the game much better.

welcome. this game is not like others there isn't much of a safety net. Don't get to thinking that there must be some type of game mechanic to protect you from what ever like in other games. Pretty much anything is fair game, scamming, trickery and what ever kind of asshattery that you can imagine. As long as you understand that up front you'll probably be fine.

Good luck! When you lose your ship, your best bet is asking the person who blew you up what you can do better next time. A good amount of the time they'll be more than happy to tell you and you might even make a new friend!

Enjoy EVE!

Awesome welcome to eve!

and just remember there are plenty of interesting things that take far less than a year to get into! from what I remember some of the most fun I had was in the first several months, Also frig pvp isn't always the most SP intensive combat, but can be highly player skill dependent.

If your reading the eveolopedia (official wiki) don't as it's outdated ; read the eve-uni wiki for info. A few pices of advice:

  • Join a player corp.
  • Go out and PvP, just fit a T1 frigate (The uni wiki has a few fits) and try but be prepared to lose ****-tons of ships
  • Join a player corp
  • Never fly what you feel you can't afford to lose. This is my variation on this topic as I often fly ships 2-3x my wallet value but am able to tank the loss
  • Join a player corp
  • Remember CONCORD is reactionary and that high sec can be riskier then null (in terms of deep sov-null and renter space)
  • Join a player corp
  • Have fun! Don't get bored because your grinding PvE content or mining
  • Join a player corp

Heres a list of good corps for newbies

  • BNI (my corp)
  • EvE-University
  • RvB

Be warned of corps trying to steal your money and ask for an entrance fee (*Cough*Goons*Cough*)

Welcome to the grindhouse!

A. Read some stuff intended for new players. Learn the game.
B. Scrap everything you just read and learned. (Well almost everything)
C. Join a new player friendly corp. (Preferably somewhat established)
D. Learn the game. Have fun.

Basically just because i liked the vibe from Davey's post.. - Join a corp!

Glad im not the only one that picked up on the earnest tone here,

op, much of the behaviour here would be considered too far in other mmos/online environments.

people here (myself included) will take advantage of you if you allow us.

your attitude will define your experience with the community ,
if you can keep that chin up after one of us has ruined everything you worked for (which will happen) ,
you will earn respect and possibly a friend or two.

we might be ruthless bastards but most (if not all) of us will be happy to help someone we just messed up if they are a sport about it.

welcome aboard

Thanks for the Reply, I really appreciate you trying to be up front and honest about what I am getting myself into...
That always makes me feel so much better when I am trying something new to me...

I've played other MMO's before, but never this complex and where your knowledge actually plays a huge part of how things go....other than knowing which skills hit the hardest and which ones work best for PVP and or PVE and so on...

I have some quesitons for you though...and here they are....

What , How and Why did you Evolve yourself to beome more of a Mercenary Pilot other than lets say a "Benevolent Pilot"?

You refer to yourself as a "suicide ganker"....Does that mean you throw youself under the bus to take the person out?

I guess I would like some clarification on that terminology if you please...

But the main thing I am curious about is that the Ultimate Evolution everyone comes to after playing Eve for a while?

Hello {ergherhdfgh},

Wnat I want to know is Why you choose to play like that? Is everyone like this?

Do you think it's the Ultimate Evolution of a Eve player?

Is that where all this takes you? Becasue I don't want to do those types of things to othe players...

Is there another way to play?

Okay, i've seen that said before about your PVP statement.

So, is jumping in a Frigate and then "RED DWARFING it" that first thing most people do??
