Laser optimal vs falloff ammo change question

In my Harbinger, if I am at 29 in, that is the max range of my brand with navy multifreq. But navy UV is within optimal. Should I prefer to change ammo when enemies enter optimal or the fallof for the more powerful, shorter range ammo?

laser generally don't do very well outside optimal, their damage application drops quite steeply just after a couple, maybe few, Km into falloff.

So keep that in mind and use your own judgement (e.g keep an eye on hit quality notifications)

I did not think of hit quality notifications. Thank you!

There is a certain amount of flexibility on range but generally speaking you want to be taking advantage of the lasers' insta-switch to rapidly adapt your ammo to your needs...

I assume that you're using beams, so the answer is not Navy Multis... Scorch. I would therefore be switching to Navy Gamma or (more likely) Navy X-Ray (On Tachys I carry Gamma but most of my Beam ships I skip it and carry Gleam, Multi, X-Ray, Uv, Aroura and Radio).
