Dear CCP I am in the middle of buying a new motorcycle and needed to ask permission on painting it or my helmet with eve online symbols. I don't require anything in return just atleast wanted to paint a cool helmet with a few ships on it and EvE online posted accross the back. My painters will not do this without some kind of permission. Mostly if I was to paint my KLR with a full EvE online custom paint job. If you wish to contact me you are welcome to do so Via on here as I have notifications selected. if a better route would be to call the office and leave a message with my name and number I am more than happy to do so. If this is a no go then thats okay too and there is no harm done. I love this game and wont take any offense.

Thank you and fly safe.

Did you open a support ticket or tried contacting their license department?

Try a support ticket. I also have not contacted a company about using their images. The fm should be able to send you to the right person. I only see an email for the developers department.

yeah i tried calling and will leave a message before. Most don't for images and normally they don't mind. My painters just wanna make sure all is legal due to this being put on a vehicle that is to become mostly my daily driver. I also don't wanna step on anyone shoes and would feel more comfy if I had something stating having a Eve online symbol put on something not made by CCP is covered.

Personaly I think CCP allows it asking as your not profiting from it. You may have to comb through the EULA. How about putting a copyright symbol and CCP next to it in the bottom corner. ©CCP

I'm not entirely sure what category to use, though. If I had to guess, I would say "Community Management". If that's wrong, they will probably direct you to the proper one.

Good luck!

Lol been looking at it for like 10minutes now trying to figure that out. This is try in most cases but my painters just want a sure thats fine due to the US having some pretty big laws on this kind of stuff as well as doing events such as desert events they feels I should have some kind of permission to put this kind of project on my bike. If I can get a helmet painted then I am happy but if I can get a full okay then I might deck the whole Bike out and do a full paint job. but this will depend to CCP. I can see if I can paint a CCP logo but how big would it need to be and where. not a lot of room on the little helmet lol. I might be able to put a CCP tag on the inside in the back or next to the instructions. I wanted to do my Boulevard this way but figured it might look cooler on the KLR being I will be on that one more. man this is more complicated then I thought or I am over thinking it lol.

I used to run a Kinko's about a decade ago where we got copyright drilled into our heads every chance they got. Had me curious about this so I went looking for anything concerning legal on their end.

And I can't find squat.

The closest I found was at the very end of the EULA and that just says to send an email to the support address.

https://community.eveonline.com/support/policies/eve-eula/

The closest I came under the ticket system was under Other Issues -> Community Management and even that's a stretch.

edit: Scratch that. Found it here: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=287431

This depends.

Back in the day, around 2005 I wanted to make a bumper sticker just for myself. I had no intentions of selling it, and I figured I might as well just ask. So I sent a note to CCP and asked if I could make a bumper sticker just for me that said "my other car is a mining barge" and use a picture of a barge. I got a very politie "no" as a response. So I never did it.

But then about one or maybe two years ago, I saw someone post an image of an eve car window decal they made for themselves and several devs said "that's awesome".

My guess is, if its just for you, it should be ok. But as the above story shows.. there are conflicts. e-mail via ccpgames.com or file a ticket to be sure. And damn it do I still want that bumper sticker lol

Thanks for the replys and I have heard as long as its for me and not money before which it is. I wont be upset if they say no. I just figured it would be a cool way to promote them without them having to pay anything. I gain no money or anything from it other than having a epic bike paint job lol. I might just have to see if a CCP member sees this post for an answer.

Speaking of promotion, I feel like hijacking and telling a story.

Back in 2006, my wife and I were getting married and going on a long honeymoon across the country. Was fun, anyway, the day after we left to go to her parents house for the wedding, my eve on arrived. In it was a contest about promoting eve. The contest ended the day after we got home, but that was not the point. If I had gotten it sooner, I would of embarked on a month long eve promotional tour, and most likely won the trip to Iceland. But alas was not ment to be.

My idea way to have signs on my car, and hold signs at every monument I visited , yea I was gonna go nuts lol.

Anyway, what is it you want to put on the bike and helmet? I'm curious

..or you could just do what the above posters have said and put in a support ticket.. and make sure you get an answer.

Waiting for a Dev response to a thread in GD is like the coin operated toy rocketship ride outside of stores, it gives you something to do but it wont get you anywhere.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

I'm sure most of the CCP folks have clauses in their contracts that they're not allowed to make official responses defining company policies.

aka "No comment"

I know most if not all of the employment contracts I've had to sign had them.

Keeps the kids quiet for a while though. Plus give the repair guy in business when the machine breaks down every 3 days....

The moral of the story here is... if it looks cool, do it, and don't tell anyone until you have pics, then show it off.

Here's how it's been throughout the years:

- if you ask using the official channels you get the official "not allowed", because they're forced by law to act against any and all attempts at people using their trademarks and it's impossible for a GM to give limited permissions.

- if you make something that's not with the intent to make profit but just for yourself or a small group of people (again, without RL money changing hands) then they'll let it slide and if you post screenies on the forums you'll get devs telling you how awesome it looks.

Good luck with your cool helmet.

The question no one asked is your painter going to charge you for doing this? If so, someone is making money off CCP's property so more than likely the answer is no. Will anyone care enough to prosecute?

Questions like this come up every now and then and most of the time the answer centers on two points:

1. You can't sell it for money
2. You can't use the intellectual property to promote something else that you sell for money

I have seen cases of people making stuff who could sell it for ISK. But who knows if policy changed or not. There was a policy change that was included with the Summer of Rage regarding handling of IP.

File your support ticket on a Friday for better results.

I have enhanced the chance of that happening by forwarding your question to CCP. Keep in mind that if and/or when an answer will be given on the forum, is not for me to say.
Still, your best bet is indeed a Support Ticket, as stated above by other posters including my colleague ISD LackOfFaith.

Sounds like a cool project.

Shoot me an EVEmail with a little more detail in it, and we'll see what we can do to assist Smile
