Realistic dirt and weathering on ships

The new rendering system introduced a whole new layer of realism to the look of our rides, but one thing i noticed is that the amount of dirt and weathering on ships could benefit from a look by the design team, In my opinion, the amount of dirt and weathering should fit the ship in question, for example:

- Combat ships see alot of action on the field and frequenly get damage that needs to be repaired, so these ships see a high level of (offscreen, as it should be) "maintainance. hence, these ships should look like well maintained machines, with no dirt and weathering (perhaps a small amount of it on older Tech 1 designs to reflect their more advanced age)

- Industrial ships on the other hand should be dirty and weathered, as they see much less external maintainence and spend alot of their time in dusty asteroid belts and littered spacelanes.

The ships tech level should also be considered, it would be strange that an advanced piece of technology looks older than the ship that preceded it. example: a number of armor platings on the Vargur look stained with dirt patches, while its tech 1 counterpart has hardly a mark on it, this should be reversed in my humble opinion

P.S rust in space makes no realistic sense, metal does not rust in space, and why fly in rusted ship? rust would only make a ships armor/structure more fragile

Look.

Can everyone who wants to mess with the ship textures.

Please, stop?

This is a PVP game where you should be zoomed out that it does not matter.

All these silly different textures do is lag the game down.

Stop.

EVE is becoming shallow and puerile; it will satisfy neither the veteran nor the "WoW" type crowd in the transition.

can people try to do some research rather than not only reposting an idea that comes up a few times but one that CCP has said they are working on implementing in the form of older ships get weathered .

as for rust in space it does make seance seeing as the ships are exposed to oxygen in the hanger and you don't know maybe trit doesn't loose structural integrity when it rusts may not even oxidase at all and discolors do to other forms of reactions

and hate to break it to you but eve is not a space ship PvP game but a social game that thrives on conflict

if it was just about PvP we would have arenas and the like

You beat me to it.

In the last o7 show they said that they are experimenting with it, so give them some time to figure this out.

If I am correct, you will be able to see if a ship is 'brand new' or if it see some action.

Eve Minions is recruiting.

This is the law of ship progression!

If i might be so bold Jenshae, who the BLEEPING BLEEP do you think you are telling other people (and me) what to do? you might like to run with an ultra high gangsta zoom on your eve, whereas i have always liked (even in PVP GASP) to zoom in so i can see the pretty spaceships...

Now i wasn't at b-r or anything but i was in the great war for the south way back when and i never noticed any of the "mandatory zoomed out" stuff being much of a problem.

BACK TO THE TOPIC AT HAND:

Now i personally like THE IDEA of weathering and such and i could see me leaving the damage on my PVP boats, chipped paint, scorch marks etc. Having said that i feel you should be able to remove it, and somehow remove it in space. If my slaves dont propperly clean my incursion boats i'm going to space those guys right out an airlock...

And since i'm sure atleast one Avatar pilot wants his big golden SpaceWilly to be the goldest and shiniest it can be it needs to be doable in space (maybe a use for nanite?)

Yet, I am sure that ships when your logged off in Dock....or simply Docked up for a little bit receive some sort of maintenace.

Then turn them off, set your graphics to minimum and turn off all the graphic effects if you cannot afford a properly spec'd PC. If I wanted to play Spaceship Frameworks Online, I would play Elite. Who are you to say how I play my sandbox? A bit less condemning: Don't complain about people wanting more content; instead complain about CCP removing customization settings to personalize your space experience. Blink

To the OP: It's coming, soon. Just wait. And just let them finish the PBR system properly first before they add advanced texture effects and features to it.

My ridicule, heavy criticism and general pale outlook about your or CCP's ideas is nothing but an encouragement to prove me wrong. Give it a try.

Thank god I don't hava to think about rust. I loose so many ships that I don't have to think about such details.

And for the rest: I have a bunch of cleaning, armor&hull repair drones plus the adequate amount of exotic dancers and elite slaves in the cargo hold. They clean up so: no rust needed.

Right. 3000 ships, all with their own unique snow flake texture, even on low settings, will make any graphics card that exists right now, cry.

It is part of good game design to minimise nodes and recycle textures for performance reasons.

But the sky isn't falling Chicken Little. I promise. I can almost guarantee that what we will get at first is a limited selection of skin options so that CCP can gauge the impact to the game overall for exactly the reasons you quote. This isn't their first rodeo, after all.

But let's be realistic, the ships are the star of the show - so it makes sense to keep updating the game to make them look better.

Additionally, I would reasonably expect to implement a "use default skin" option client side to keep it from even loading the player created skins.

The textures don't make graphics cards cry. Mine is past its prime and handles most situations just fine. A lot of the processing spike you're fearmongering about was resolved with the rather quiet introduction of the Space Object Factory, a change in the way assets are coded. Bro. Do you even devblog?

That is because the game is still currently really well made and robust.

Simple version of what is stressed:
Textures (images wrapped around an object) ---> graphics card memory.
Nodes (points in 3D space shaping an object) ---> graphics processor.
