Back when video games came in boxes... and way back when Eve was $50, I bought the aforementioned game and saved the box.

While I was out of town my wife redecorated my room and took a bunch of these boxes down to Kinkos or what ever and had them copied onto black matte.

Long story short, I have a copy of the original Eve Online box directly to the right of my computer.

And it is driving me crazy.

What is that fish shaped ship in the picture, and what type of station is it that the fish is shooting at?

A link to the picture for to help.

its a templar, an amarr fighter used by carriers.

That ringing in your ears you're experiencing right now is the last gasping breathe of a dying inner ear as it got thoroughly PULVERISED by the point roaring over your head at supersonic speeds. - Tippia

Looks like some of the caldari stations and possibly a navy comet or brutish. I think the lia dia stations are that design.

The ship is obviously a Navy Comet.

That did not exsist at release.

That is what it looks like, but those were not pilot-able at release either... It seems really odd that they would have an NPC ship on the cover...

I thought it looked Caldari but for some reason I remember it being Minmatar when I saw it in game so many years ago. That model has been replaced right?

Definitely Caldari.
It's still there in game, I think the model might have been slightly improved upon. But it still maintains the figure.
Here it is, see?

Looks more like a Federation Navy Comet to me. And that's definitely what it is -- you can tell based on the positioning of the engines, the wings, and the ridge running down the ship's spine. Very clear.

Lots of games do that, though. They dump a bunch of visuals -- screenshots, design art, rough models, etc. -- into the hands of the art department, and those are the guys who put together the box art. It's far less important that it be 100% reflective of the gameplay experienced by the player than something eye-catching.

And for the record, I still buy boxed copies of my games whenever possible.

Someone should read up on epic forum posts of the past.

It's a Templar, an Amarr fighter used by carriers.

Flight of two Federation Navy Comets (flying with an Intaki logo?)

And what I think is two Imicus hulls.
Although, it's way too blurry to tell properly.

However, there's no mistaking the Comets in the foreground.

Now I feel old for trying to resurrect a classic ...

Wow, I couldn't even see them in the OP's blurry image. Those, I believe, are Bantams, rushing to defend the station. The give-away is the positioning of the engines relative to the profile.

Nuh uh.
I had thought the same thing with a few various Frigate hulls, but it's not the Bantam.

These ships have quite distinct upper and lower thrusters.
The ships in the picture have a more let's say 'complete' hull than what the Bantam does. And there seems to be no frontal bridge on these ships either.

While it's very hard to tell, it's easy to rule out some.
Unless, of course, the 2003 model Bantam looks quite different in profile to what it does now. Then I'd be wrong.
I'm not sure it's the Imicus, but yeah, personally I can't see it being the Bantam even from a extreme perspective view.

Any idea where one still exists in game? I looked at a few logistics stations near Jita but couldn't find one shaped like that.

This is my biggest issue with the whole hunt. So many ships and models have changed how is it even possible to be sure?

I will say that if you look up a navy comet in game you can move the camera around so it looks exactly like that image.

Once I have this all figured out the next step, of course, is to recreate the image. Is the currently agreed upon Comet using Lasers?

Ok, ok. Just hang on. I'll replicate the entire scene in 3D space for you.

It'll take about 30 minutes, or longer. Please be patient.

Looks like blasters to me, but as they added proper gun turret you might as well go with rails. Shrug.

I still think they're Bantams. They're turned enough towards the camera that the protruding cockpit may be indistinguishable against the background of the remainder of the ship.

It's also entirely possible that -- as I pointed out earlier -- the image is a result of alpha or beta-level artwork and that those vessels never even existed in the game. But I think the Bantam is still the most likely culprit for three reasons: A) the placement of the main bank of engines, B) the presence of the wing structure on the starboard (image left) side of the hull (which would be wrong for the Imicus, but perfectly fits the Bantam, particularly if the other wing is masked from view by the hull), and C) the bulky lower portion of the ship protruding prominently.

I'll render this one first, and then go back and add Bantams to the scene.

Ok, edit, I'll add Bantams first and see how that looks.

Gah. What a bore.

"Just 30 minutes" she said.
"It won't be long" she said.

All for an extremely basic rendition..
