Certs were introduced with a new player content pack some time back. There are used to flag you when you have met skill requirements for spcific aspects of EVE.

Most Vets disregarded them due to a number of useless 5 skills that weren't related to the job descriptions of the cert that made them less than practical. Newer players enjoy getting them just to say they have them. Make of it what you will. They are as valuable as you make them really.

WB and no, they have no mechanical aspects. It's simply a template system if you are unsure of what skills to train.

Not really. The most conspicuous thing about them with regard to vets is the paranoid fear fear that targets will some how figure out their fittings in combat if they display their certs.

If i remember right to get the elite combat certs theirs really only 2 skills you need to raise beyond useful levels and even those dont need to reach 5.

Go in game, check your character sheet, certificates are under your skills displayed. If you open up the certificates planner you can claim any new certificates you have with the button bottom left. Probably after that evemon will shut up.

It's a case of first impression then. I saw mining drones 5 for Ice specialist and closed the cert screen.

mostly good for noobs as a guide to the core skills, beyond that, its a little gimpy

and if you claim them (the claim certificates button on the certificate planner on your character sheet) you won't have to look at the notice anymore

Actually everyone is wrong about claimable certificates.

What they are are special awards only given to special players in Eve-Online that gone above & beyond the call of duty.

You get them by going to Iceland & there they are awarded to you in a ceremony by CCP Hilmar himself.

You should feel very privileged that you got them.

I myself have never received any. :(

Get all the certificates you can.

Change their permissions from private to public.

Tell everyone about them in local.

You know what they say....'It's not paranoia if they're really after you".

Certs are useful in the beginning of your EVE career, because they list the skills you need to follow an 'optimal' training path (ie, they'll tell you how to load up your queue for a particular skillset).

The danger, which I don't consider paranoia, is that you can reveal too much information with your certs. As my flight commander was saying the other night, 'No free intel for the enemy'. For people that know what to look for, certs will tell them what you're likely to be fitting at any given moment.

In short, it's best to set most of them to 'Private' so you don't tip an enemy off about your weak points.

I can't get rid of my darn signature!  Oh, wait....

Pretty much this ... though if you're "good" with what you reveal, you can sometimes lead the other guy on (e.g. something like improved shield skills, improved missile skills "public", and elite gunnery/armour tanking skills "private")

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia
