Seeing EVE like other games is the same as saying the basketball floor should somehow reassure the basketball players they're coming along with their game. The gym floor should say, "Hey. Nice shot!" Or, something. Maybe, give the player a new pair of über shoes.

You measure success in EVE by whether you achieve your objective. If you can't set objectives for yourself, we have groups with leaders who can do that for you. Even then, you'll have to set your objective to "join a corp." Then, they can think for you. Barring that, if you find yourself at home IRL unable to think of anything to do with your life, you aren't going to find EVE is any easier.

The thing about "those" games is, they're for people who can't think and need someone to do it for them. EVE is for those who can, and do think, or those who are smart enough to latch onto people who show that ability.

TL;DR You measure your EVE success by how big a ship you have. Just get one that matches the size of your...
...ego.

More seriously (yea, right), what you describe is why I like EVE and dislike some other MMOs (i briefly played WoW). It's also why some people will never 'mesh' with EVE.

EVE demands you be a self starter, self motivator, self congratulator. It provides the backdrop, the 'STAGE', the 'story' is the one you make. Some people cannot STAND that, they aren't creative or patient people, they want to participate in someone else's fantasy (ie what you do when you play games like WoW or Star Trek Online which has 'episodes').

And there is nothing at all wrong with that....until you chose to play a SANDBOX ("make your own story") game then complain about having to make your own story. The problem is the 'misfit mentality' players playing the wrong game, not how EVE 'presents rewards'.

I can't come up with a reason, or justification, for instant gratification in games outside of getting you hooked and pay money to the developer.

It's not good for the game, only good for the developer, but then again, sole aim of all consumer products is to create profit to the developer and publisher instead of let players feel like champions.
