Hacking, what do the numbers mean?

From what Ive read, maybe this is a somewhat recent addition..??

TO start, Im familiar with hacking, and how everything works, exploration is my primary source of income.

One thing I don't understand is the numbers in some of the nodes. you will click a node (that is ends up being empty) and sometimes it has a number, 1-5 in it.

What does that mean? is that the number of nodes adjacent that contain something, or nothing?

Ive read a few guides and none of them mention these numbers, and when there are pictures none of them show any nodes with numbers in them, which is why I suspect maybe this is a recent addition..

Any ideas?

Correct. Usually it's something "good" like the end node you need or a buff item. But it can also be a white dot node which(for me anyway) typically spawns a restoration node. X

It's the range to the nearest 'good' node. If you have a 2 showing, that means somewhere two away is a buff, mystery node, or central core.

Actually it can be a "bad" node as well. I ignore them.

Yea if it were just good or bad nodes that could be important, but if it's either.. That's pretty worthless.

It is good nodes only. Bad nodes show up anywhere.

It could be the mystery boxes which are usually bad, but the defense nodes show up anywhere.

The numbers indicate the distance (max value 5) to the next good stuff (tools, core) or a cache (which you should not open unless you are desperate, you know). Imo these hints are very helpful and have increased my success rate (at 120/30) significantly at the cost of some more time spent hacking/thinking (but I'm getting faster on this ...) For example if you see 5s in one direction with about 5 nodes diameter you know that nothing good is there and you can focus on the other direction. As a rule of thumb, follow a route of decreasing numbers.
