How long do you intend Dust 514 to last, CCP?

How many people continued playing ps1 games on the ps2? And the ps2's on the ps3?

A lot. Sony releases PS1 and PS2 games on the PlayStation Network and many people buy and play them. Furthermore, HD conversions of PS2 titles have sold very well.

Count me in as one of them. Originally I purchased the PS3 that had backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games, but it was emulated. I wanted the real deal, so I traded my brand new PS3 for an older model that was purchased when they were still putting the Emotion Engine chips from the PS2 into them...no PS2 emulation for me! So yeah, some of us DO play the older games on our PS3's still.

Dust will be getting graphic and gameplay updates in it's free expansions, exactly the same way EVE has for the last several years. When the PS4 comes out, if Dust is still going, then it's gonna get it's own Trinity.

After all for the last few years CCP have been making new graphic content/assets way more intensive than what the average PC can handle today and scaling them down for the EVE client, it's not hard to imagine them doing the same for Dust.

Dust is a new type of title for both CCP and Sony; with some exciting future potential. I'd be very concerned if Sony was not working with CCP to ensure that the game would be able to take advantage of a new platform allegedly said to be ready before Dust 514's release date.

But that is entirely speculation.

i'm worried about their involvement with planetside 2 and where their loyalties lie.

It's hard to say, after all SOE president John Smedley is an EVE online player and EVE was one of the major influences for PS2.

And according to Matt Higby...

Quote:
...but it goes to the core of PlanetSide 2’s remit, and spells out its vital difference from other claimants to the MMOFPS title, such as Dust 514. As creative director Matt Higby puts it, “We’re not just building a shooter, we’re building a world.”

See Warhawk on the PS3...still going strong after all these years.

No they don't. Planetside players stuck with that game for a LONG time. The same will happen with Dust if it's a well made game. Just because players buy a new FPS when it comes out doesn't mean they have an "attention span of 3 months", or that the game they used to play dies....

At the risk of drawing the ire of the consoletards, planetside was a PC game.

The tradition of small holdouts keeping games alive well past their due date is a strong one on PC. I played tribes vengeance for two years after most people would have said it was well dead. There were a grand total of ~30 people playing in Australia at the time.

I've never yet seen that happen on console, mostly because servers for consoles are hosted by the game manufacturer, and when players drop below a critical threshold they shut them down, see halo 1 and 2.

I said it elsewhere but people were still playing Halo 2 online multiplayer from 2004 until 2010 when MS shut down the online services for original xbox games. It's a lot harder to find other instances of that because consoles have only had online gaming for in the last decade, and it wasn't until the 360 and PS3 that these online services for consoles really kicked off.

It's the same as Halo Reach, in my opinion a much better game than Halo 3, yet people are still playing Halo 3 multiplayer extensively and that's been out for a good few years now. Same with CoD, 4 is still being played online.

Give people a good multiplayer experience and it will be played to death, doesn't matter if it's on the console or PC, but eventually even these games run out of juice out of lack of support, a problem Dust won't have. I just hope they nail the multiplayer.

Not all console FPS's have games that only have servers hosted by the game maker.

Also, if a game like Planetside was made for the ps3, I guarantee the same effect would take place, the time played on the game would be just as long.

There is nothing PC about the original Planet Side.

Why you ask?

If it says yes this would feel at home on a console then it failed the PC shooter test.

There is plenty of PC in the original Ghost Recon. Battlefields before bad companies and many others

Dust 514's CPM 1 Iron Wolf Saber Eve mail me about Dust 514 issues.
