Hatred towards Roleplayers

Hard for me to respond to this one.

I can tell you that I met quite a few roleplayers who are doing it for a while already ...
... and I catch incongruencies (isthataword?) between their character and their real persona.

I caught myself being angry at a liar, until I realised that he simply failed at roleplaying.

Bad rolplayers? Not necessarily.
On a level of Erica Dusette? Not by a mile.

I can not really answer any better. Complicated.
One doesn't necessary need to know a person to spot lies.

I think a big issue for me to responding to this is
your completely inadequate use of the word "strange".

This comes from the fact that you don't really know how to spot liars...
... yeah I dare saying that without meaning it offensive.

The reason why I say it's superficial btw, is because it is.
That's not individualism.

Analogy:
People say sugar is bad for teeth.
That's wrong. It's a superficial view on the matter.

Sugar doesn't do **** to teeth,
but the bacteria who process the sugar create an acid that destroys it.

Imagine I'm the dentist here, who successfuy holds up a language barrier
that allows him to roleplay a person that doesn't know how to properly express himself.

And that grammar ... oh god that grammar .....

Stop confusing people ... -.-'

What he is saying is that you lack understanding of the matter,
which is the reason why you have issues with what you are having issues with.

People... characters ... roleplayers ... people prerending to be roleplayers.

In the end it's always a human and they all make the same mistakes.

A whole industry builds up on that.

Thanks for the reply Erica, I am sorry I missed it on the first page yesterday, along with a lot of other really great and warm responses That is exactly the kind of perspective I was hoping to hear about. I think you have a lot of awesome roleplayers in your community after watching it. Im looking forward to playing around in the sandbox.

Knowing that people are living with the problem and not being discouraged by it is all I really needed to hear I think. I am willing to work with the situation as long as I know what the situation is.

I can see there is more tension between roleplayers and non roleplayers in this game than in any game I have ever seen.

That's EVE and it's not unique to RP vs Non-RP. There is conflict between every play style.

It's a very harsh place in the context of an MMO. Which is why a lot of us love it, and why some other people don't like it.

The Golden Serpent wrote:
The trolling folks in militian chat certainly had time to post expletives and walls of nasty spam at me for about 15 minutes so I think it's more about being hateful bigots than "not having enough time". While I didn't intend for it to be about trolling, I can really have a fun time where I am a religious nut who consternates other hateful and bigoted players who insist on going out of their way to be earthlings, so I am not going to stop roleplaying in militia chat or any other chat, considering the opinions presented here.

Haters are always gonna hate. I dunno about you though but I'm not having much fun when I'm being showered in a ton of hate, and at the end of the day when you log into EVE you should be here to have fun. So do your thing, have fun how you like to have fun. But also realise others are going to do the same and a lot of them enjoy trolling. Big smile

So in the end I think we find a medium point. For me I'm confident enough to start RPing in any local chat, and did as recently as tonight in fact (got a great response too which is unusual. Nice system I guess). But I'm not interested in spending hours reading troll posts or deflecting hate while I'm trying to have fun, so if the audience is hostile I'll eventually move onto somewhere that is more receptive. In other words, don't persist too much in places like Militia chat because at the end of the day you'll be the one struggling to enjoy yourself while the trolls are having all the fun in the world.

Okay so one thing that confuses me about the intergalactic summit is a lot of people treat it like a text video chat...some of them treat it like a text chat, while others treat it like a sort of intergalactic emergency radio.

Yep. The Intergalactic Summit can be a lot of things, but the one thing it is not is a location.

I'll assume you're talking about the forum section, not the ingame channel. Some people treat their posts as a video interface of sorts, others treat it as a text interface. Just roll with it. Personally when I post in the IGS I consider it a forum; my characters are using a datapad or something and actually making forum posts themselves while sitting in their quarters.

When it comes to the Intergalactic Summit (or The Summit) ingame channels most people consider it a holo/video interface where everyone is using camera drones. Often people will post in a text format though, and when they do they will often prefix their messages something like this:

Erica Dusette > Text > So here I was, surrounded by Hostiles with no one but The Banana for backup when Suddenly...

The Golden Serpent wrote:
Like alot of you mentioned , I roleplay within game limitations, which means if my character is a fighter and soldier, I am going to be PvPing.

Fighters and soldier types here can often include PVE'ers as well. Afterall they're always off fighting the Guristas or Blood Raiders or something, and many take that whole storyline thing quite seriously.

The Golden Serpent wrote:
Similarily, if im getting text on my screen Im going to have my character assume it is text. (Im not playing a MUD here, after all)

Wow, don't do that. You'll be missing out. Chat here in EVE is the same as many MUDs in that it's IRC based, with actions and such. Our avatars can't meet in person in EVE, so you still need to RP such things narratively or action-based.

When Erica is talking to someone in convo I consider it a holo/video comm. We can see each other, so I add in narrative of how things appear and what she is doing as she's talking.

Many people simply RP in-person meetings in the same way, over convo or in a channel. Even though these people aren't actually together ingame at the time they use what people call "the interbus shuttle service" to imaginarily bring their character's together. Personally I hate that and refuse to do any ingame RP in that way - if someone is meeting my character in person then they actually have to be at the same location before I start to RP the scenario. Most people aren't that strict though because it's not often practical.

Lastly, like every single part of EVE, the RP scene here is what you make it. CCP give us the basic framework and tools for everything and the players do the rest. If you're looking for strict guidelines and areas for RP, or firm moderation, well just like every other part of this game you will not find it here because that's not what EVE is about.

Have fun, do things your way, but watch and take guidance from others already doing it so you can still have a smooth time. RP is a little different in every MMO along with the community engaged in it and EVE is no different.

Not my intention, really. I simply meant to answer your title question from the OOC player's perspective. I don't have an issue with RP in general. I rather enjoy some of it. I do have an issue with some specific RPers, but that is unrelated.

I do hope you find your niche. I agree with Erica, militia chat is not the place. If consternation is your goal, you can hardly be surprised when people rage.

With regards open hostility,
there's the notion about eve that it's a much more grown-up game than the rest of the genre.
I know that's one of my initial thoughts about it and was certainly a part in my initial fascination,
it helped validate the game to my sensibilities as a grow man with children of his own, iv never felt at any point that it wasn't an adult game with adult content and themes,
it's complexity , infamously harsh and largely unregulated player interaction would support this in my eyes

I can certainly say that this is one of the games strongest virtues (imo, obviously),
now while I don't feel this way personally I know a lot of people both in and outside eve who would see the serious role-playing element of the community as detractors of this virtue, they would see it as anathema to what they feel is part of the core of eve as it's childish and frivolous and how they feel kids and preteens would treat the game.

In sort, the rp crowd threaten their perception of a very good, long living and unique hobby of theirs.

I have not read this entire thread so if someone said this already then I'm sorry but if this guy is Amarr and looking to RP you should look into CVA

I know they are not has hard core as they used to be but I think that they are still pretty serious into their RP. You may want to look into this and see if it is up your ally.

Most players in FW are there for one of two reasons:

  1. That sweet delicious high ISK/hr income with a zero-SP character.
  2. PvP in a slightly more structured manner than vanilla nullsec or lowsec provides.

Don't get me wrong, RP is great, but trying to do it in militia chat is like walking into a modern fencing club dressed like this and exclaiming "I bite my thumb at thee, scallywags!" There's a time and place for that, and the current FW is not it.

I recommend finding a corp of RPers aligned with your in-character interests to find a more RP-friendly atmosphere.

The weekend has been nice, I love the game and the RPers. I think I can totally live with where things are at. I like all of the characters I have met. Im having a lot of fun developing this character. The explanation was great Ms. Dusette on the chat and forums, but I am still getting used to it I guess. I still have sooo many questions about the game, most of them surrounding food.

Like, cinnamon donuts. I said something about that, then winced mentally because I wasn't sure there was cinnamon in the game. I knew there were donuts because of the silly donut holder in the market but....

Some people are very casual, making earth references in their bio and talking about stuff that i am not even certain exists in the world. Meh...I guess I'll learn.

I fall back on other weird things from sci fi novels I've read over the years to fill in the blanks.

Another thing is the skin coloration variance is quite extreme in the character maker. As Im trying to learn what is the norm, I examined all of the NPC's in the game through the NPC corps. All Khanid are light skinned. My character's whole family is BLACK AS BLACK can get. I thought that's what they meant by Dark Amarr, and I liked how it looked, alot. But I have yet to see a Khanid or Amarr, even player character, with skin on the darkest end of the spectrum. But it's a choice available.

I thought maybe I could explain it by saying her family had their genes manipulated a long time ago to melanize the skin to make their survivailty in space pre-capsule/clone tech more likely. UV rays and such....but I'd like to hear some perspective on this.

I don't know. First world problems.

I do the same thing personally.

To be honest I know almost nothing about Achuran cultural history, or even lore in general. I just want to play a character I enjoy, not one who fits strictly into someone else's framework.

So I have a character who's from an "obscure and remote" part of Achuran territory, allowing me to makeup whatever damn lore or family history I please lol She also lives in wormhole space and has a great disinterest in goings-on, news or history in known space. Convenient for me. Blink

She loves caramel lattes, and I'm sure your character's love of cinnamon is perfectly fine. Gotta remember the first settlers in New Eden would have brought with them most terran commodities, so almost everything could still be found here. If someone was anal enough to pull you up over cinnamon they're not really even worth RPing with imho. I'd prolly just troll them instead

Roleplayers make non-roleplayers (by far the majority of on line gamers) uncomfortable. Especially the more die-hard kind, who insist on staying in character in the most absurd situations and (more importantly) try to impose their role playing on the play style of non-roleplayers.

This may be an MMORPG, but most players do not want to act out the RPG part, even if they like the story.

My advice: find a group of like-minded people, and keep the role playing in corp chat.

Can confirm.

The amount of non-roleplayers who LOVE my roleplaying ...

... is literally uncountable.

Also I do find a mindset that advocates that people "stick within their own group" rather questionable.
If you have an issue with something, sometimes the issue is with you and not the other side.

Pushing people away, because you don't feel like accepting them,
although they do you no harm at all, makes you a bad person.
