Before I purchased a subscription I knew that Eve has a bit of a reputation as a male game but im hoping that doesn't mean it's also a neckbeard game.

Ive also noticed a lot of homophobia in the game, like a corp owner REALLY needed to know if I was really a woman. He just kept badgering me about it so I finally said "Yeah I am a female irl but my character might be a tranny I havnt decided yet"

Im a very attractive straight woman in real life and successful and happily married.

What woman wants another player crawling up her ass about what sex she is? I get that enough irl. This is why the game has such a shameful genitalia ratio imo...

EVE actually has quite a sizeable female gamer group.

Hell, they even have their own private club (read: chat channel) to gossip about us men...

As for neckbeards, Yes...we do have them. No not everybody is like that. If you encounter someone who harasses you, walk away / block and ignore him. If it is borderline rule breaking, just report it.

No, it has the ratio because it doesn't appeal to the majority of women. It's not like initially it was 50/50 and then the "bad behavior" drove women away; it's always been 95% - 5%. There used to be some women-only corps., including PVP ones, but I'm not sure whether they're still active.

I know a good bunch of female players. Doing anything from low-end miner up to alliance leading and FCing fleets.

I know 3 that I would more then happily throw a ship in their fleet, not cause they are female...becuase they are among the most competent FCs I've flown with.

With good EVE players, all that matters in EVE are your in game actions and your in game reputation...No matter sex, religion, nationality, etc etc.

This is also very very true. Just like in most other MMO's, a lot of vocal role players tend to be god gaming and not sticking to the mechanics and what their character can actually do and the status their character actually has. This tends to annoy a lot of people, including other role players. In serious RPG's people get banned for that ****, but in MMO's it is the norm for some reason.

God gaming makes me feel as warm as frozen helium. I try to avoid it as much as possible.

Anyone that asks your RL gender isn't worth responding to. They are probably a creepy single guy. Even if you were single you'd want to stay away from those ones.

As for the roleplay hostility - I think you might have my alliance to blame for that. We make the occasional enemy, and because our founder is extremely verbose and sometimes makes blog posts in character, we get called roleplayers. (We aren't generally, although members are free to RP if they wish).

This seems to have led to a section of EVE's playerbase saying things like 'CODE. are evil horrible gankers, CODE. are roleplayers'. Say this often enough, and people start linking roleplaying and ganking.

It's the public image which sticks, not line members. You're a dirty RP'ing ganker, I'm a dirty blobbing F1 monkey carebear, everyone in hisec is risk averse "elite pvp'er" or a mission running bot and everyone in lowsec is a bloodthirsty pirate which will plunder your captain's quarter for the TV as he smashed his own one.

I think what the girl two posts above, to whom I deny any connection whatsoever,
is trying to say is that it depends on what you do and how you transport the message.

I RPd an outlaw n 2012 and I had absolutely no issues with my public image.
People loved me.

When you are an ******* people simply will call you an *******.

RP in general is still on it's way of getting pushed,
even though the failures of CODE are doing their counterproductive crap.

I was "accused" of being an RPer the other day because my blog contains some IC writeups. Really I'm not RPing while I play. It would actually be very hard to do the things I do while staying "in character". Combat in EVE is all about efficiency and timing, and you can't have "the story" mucking that up or you will lose your ship. If you see a target, the next discussion is whether or not your are equipped to kill it - not whether or not it is a believer in whatever fake religion floats your ship. However, I occasionally find it fun to try and fit a "story" to the events after they happen.

Most players just don't have the time to waste interacting with RPers. Especially in militia chat, which is not designed as a place to RP. FW players have goals and work together to accomplish them, giving the chat a purpose beyond whatever "the story" is. They don't care about your fake opinions, they want to find a fleet to join - so you're going to get a lot of backlash in that chat if you spam it with "nonsense".

While there are a few larger RP groups, for the most part RP in EVE is done on a personal level or with a few friends. This is because you really can't participate in a lot of what the game has to offer without breaking character. So people RP a bit with a friend or write up IC blogs after their fights, but they break character to talk with fleet mates and actually get the job done. If you are just spamming RP in random channels to people that don't care about it, not only are you just scratching the surface of what EVE has to offer, you are also pissing off everyone that is trying to actually play the game.

One other consideration is the importance of trust in EVE. Since RPing is a lot like lying, in that you can change your mind about how your character feels on the fly, a lot of people don't want to have anything to do with you. By breaking character, people can get to know the real you, which allows them to assess the likelyhood that you will screw them over in the future. If you are just a zealot typing in chat, everyone will assume you are either dangerous or annoying, which is enough to get rejected from most corps.

I find it weird that you talk about RP ...
... thinking it's like lying ...
... while not being an RPer.

You don't really sound like you know what you are talking about.

Totally disagree.

Just ask anyone in the corporations I've been in the past year or so. While I may be talking on comms during a fight, meanwhile my characters are shitting up fleet chat, local and corp with their own comments, commentary and antics. In fact out of the past three corps (and alliances) I've been in I was the only roleplayer out of several hundred people. Surprisingly everyone loved the way my characters would carry on ingame and, despite not being RP'ers themselves, corpmates would even begin to play along and join in.

People often enjoy having an RP'er in their midst to spice things up. Especially when that RP'er is also competent at ingame actions.

What?

In reference to my last comments above; In fact I was invited to corps, and not even asked for an API, because people appreciated how I use RP in my daily gaming and interactions with others. They enjoy it, and had come to both know and trust me and my characters. They wanted my presence in fleets, and not just because of my Tengu's DPS. When those corps eventually split, or closed, several non-RPing pilots would tell me my RP would actually be one of the things they would miss most.

Go figure. Smile

Really it comes down to individuals. Some RP'ers are jerks that nobody wants around, some non-RP'ers are also jerks who nobody wants around. The RP itself is beside the point imo.

I've pretty much only been in RP corps for over a year now, or longer. There is quite a bit of good RP in the game but it is not terribly easy to find. Then again, being one of the bad guys in EVE a lot of the RP I get in to is pretty unpleasant at times. Not easy to have nearly everyone hating you. :)

It's like I said the other day when someone asked me why I was being IC in an OOC channel. The Banana cannot be controlled or defined by these people's mortal terms and illusory boundaries.

I find it extremely amusing that the same people that dislike or are freaked out by Roleplayers can go on for hours about the pros and cons of a 'Magnetic Field Stabilizer' versus an 'Energized Adpative Nano Membrane'.

Go figure what's going on in their brains. Shocked

I dropped the damage control from my cloaky proty fit last night after I got murdered again.

The Boss always sends me in first and I'm sick of dying in bubbles, plus Lotor prolly getting sick of my 1b loss mails. Fitted me up a nice interdiction nullifier subsystem now, but lost a low slot in the process. Figured the DCU should go because Jack said "Don't really need one, handy in fleets though".

Least now I still get to keep both my Mag Stabs because cloaky proty DPS is kinda lame already as it is without making it any worse.

^^See, bananas know their PVP sh*t, too!

On top of that, they're also, well... bananas!
