I just don't get it, so I'm "playing it safe" in high sec and trying to find relic and data sites.

After an hour of jumping around in my exploration fitted algos I finally find a guresta (SP) site that ACTUALLY HAS SOMETHING TO HACK.

I hack the first object, loot it successfully, and within literally 5 seconds a bunch of hostile NPCs appear right on top of me, and immediately attack, the first salvo of missiles strips my entire shield and almost all of my armor, the second salvo kills me.

Ok so what the hell?

this is in 0.9 space.. yet here I am obliterated in a destroyer in a matter of seconds by NPCs .
Is this supposed to be some kind of joke?

Sec status of the system isn't relevant to the site itself when it comes to NPC enemies, other than in high sec those enemies will be relatively easy.

So what type of site did you scan down? Initially, it sounds like a combat site, yet you mention you're able to do some relic hacking?

In null, low, and high sec regular relic (and data) sites won't spawn NPCs. There are some new, difficult Sleeper Caches you can find, but they are very difficult to scan down and very difficult to hack.

Also, what was your fit like? If you had no tank, etc., you can be taken down quite easily.

THIS WAS In HISEC SPACE

0.9 security status!!!!

it was a "research site" I believe I didn't eve have to scan it down, it was a green.

and when I arrived there were no NPCs at all

I approached the first hackable site, hacked it, and within a few seconds of completing the hack and getting access to the can the 5 hostile NPCs appeared all within 10K and within a matter of seconds I was dead.

This cost me 1/3 of all I have, and I have nothing to show for it, now I'm jumping all over the goddamn place putting together another exploration rig.

I mean, this makes no sense.. in -1 it makes sense, but this is absurd. I never had a chance, or even the beginning of one.

Sounds like it could have been a ghost site, as those have crazy damage even for vertran players.

WHAT THE **** IS IT DOING IN HIGH SEC SPACE!?

I specifically went there to be SAFE, "getting started" not to get ****** and lose all of my ****.

SORRY, but I am extremely pissed off, this makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE WHATSOEVER..

Generally data and relic sites can only be scanned down with probes. If it didn't require probes it was likely a ghost site, which can spawn anywhere and are much more difficult. Highsec sites are hard to find to begin with due to competition, but your best bet to find them is to go to non-crowded areas of highsec. I understand your are upset, my friend just loss a ship with a 10/10 escalation site loot in it, cost him 400 mil. So we all have losses that make us mad. The big key is to learn what happened and avoid them the best you can in the future.

Once you are willing to risk it a bit c1-c3 wormholes now spawn nullsec data and relic sites, which means you may find it a bit easier to get good loots than trying to venture into lowsec or nullsec proper.

Okay so you warped to a Cosmic Anomaly. Cosmic Anomalies are normally combat sites, ore sites, and ice sites.

Again, it being in high sec has nothing to do with whether NPCs can show up and attack you.

It sounds like you found a Lesser Guristas Covert Research Facility.

I notice that on your killboard you have lost a lot more to PvP situations.

You may want to get into a scanning frigate (for it's scanning and hacking bonuses) and concentrate on find straight data and relic sites (they start out as Cosmic Signatures) so you'd have to scan them down, then you go in and hack them. Avoid the Sleeper Cache sites, they will be very difficult until you have some very good ships and scanning/hacking skills.

The regular data and relic sites will not spawn NPCs (in high, low, or null sec) and you won't have to worry about them. It will take a fair bit of patience to find them.

Here's a good guide on exploration.

You seem to be under the impression hisec is supposed to be safer. This is not really true.

The main difference between the different sec. systems is the concord response time. In terms of PVE the difference between the NPCs is negligible.

It's good that you have learnt that hisec is not safer now whilst loses are relatively small, than later when you could lose a blinged out battleship.

It makes perfect sense in EVE. Space, and everything in it, is dangerous, and out to get you. Take it in stride and learn from this. If it helps, think of your ships as a consumable. Your ships are tools for dangerous jobs.

Well bitching back at those trying to help you isn't the most productive, either.

You've already lost a lot more tools, far more than this incident.

Look at all your PvP losses.

I've provided you some answers and resources. Use them, or not. Have fun, or not.

Based on what he's answered it was a Lesser Guristas Covert Research Facility.

Should we tell him how trivial a matter it would be to find him or wait till hes short with the wrong person?

Twitch, once you've calmed down realize something. You already lost quite a few ships, some in lowsec, and KEPT GOING. That shows that you can handle some risk. Take the next logical step and figure out how to mitigate it. If you can handle being blown up by players, you can handle dying from PVE. There are resources all over the internet, and people on this forum willing to explain them all.

The next thing to realize is that anger in frustration you're feeling, is part of the appeal of the game to everyone. Loss, isn't just a bit of text on the screen telling you "lol you lost" "here try again! free of charge!".

EVE is a harsh universe, the game and the players in it ARE out to get you. Find some like minded players and watch each other's backs. Part of the thrill of this game is doing your damndest not to die, and picking yourself back up when you do. It's a meat grinder, and we're all masochists for going through it while clutching our hopes and dreams really tightly for comfort, hoping for the best.

Remember how I said EVE is harsh? This is the other aspect. People can hunt you in the game for any reason they can think up. CCP's rules regarding player interaction are famously loose. Ralph, bring out that Falcon quote. He put it better than I can.

If you do decide to stay Twitch, buckle up. EVE is one hell of a ride Blink.

I avoid PVE because it's hard and I'm too lazy to do research ahead of time and dying to npcs is embarrassing. It's much less embarrassing to die to real players. Go shoot some other players instead. Big smile

Then stop poking pebbles? A scanning frigate runs 1-2 mill. just grab another and scan some stuff down. plug the site name into google before you warp in.
