My Little Pony male fans?

I never liked My Little Pony.
When I was five, my little sister would always hog up the TV watching that show. I mean, OK, it's normal right? A show with magical, sentient, talking and coloured ponies for little girls. When I could, I'd watch a little National Geographic or Discovery Channel and watch Bear Grylls eat his own poo.
Now of course, when you think of MLP, you would assume that the audience is mainly composed out of premature girls with squeaky voices. However, I recently discovered something very, very disturbing...
MLP has male fans, AKA "bronies".
I presume that most of you know this and consider it normal. I'm not going to condemn bronies for, well, watching a little girl show, but don't you find it a wee bit odd that there are fully grown men watching a friggin' kiddie show that stars magical ponies??
But what I find even more gut-wrenching is the fact that some people make pony p*rn, and that some bronies get turned on by ponies. Seriously, what the f*ck?
So what caused MEN to watch a show intended for the extremely young female audience?

The biggest hurdle you face is the presumption that it's a girls' show. Take this away, and it is no different to adults still very much into pokemon.
Personally I dont see the facination in either of them, but that's a persoanl taste thing.
It would seem your sister has scarred you.
Look up fetishes on the internet; there are more to worry about than bronies.

The MLP thing started as a troll. Originally there were about five different people, pushing the ideology hard everywhere, until it caught on. Now you have an entire movement, with all the problems that stem due to graduating from a largely counter-culture movement to a mainstream fenomenon.

There's actually a really good documentary on this phenomenon on Netflix.

Most fascinating topic on the whole forums right now. I thought it was ONLY guys that liked the ponies. I sure didn't watch it much at all. None of my friends even spoke about the show. There were so many better things on.

I think it was even 4chan that was mostly involved in making this show so popular.
An image board full of trolls trolling trolls, infamous for gross and obnoxious content. Posting those innocent little ponies provoked some very strong reactions by users who'd rather look at gore or p0rn...and thus the meme was born.

But OP just said he was 5 years old when the show started.. the "new" show, "Friendship is Magic", right?
Not that 80's trash?

I am a little confused now, since the show started 2010...so you are really 9 years old, Rob??? Shocked

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

This explains much about why I had not heard about it when I was little. Color me illuminated lol! Because it seems like a show I would have loved when I was a kid.

I have watched 2, maybe 3 episodes.
Pretty cute, slightly funny and I guess very fit for children.
The funniest thing isn't the show itself- it's how people react when adult men start discussing magical ponies in public. Big smile

That being said, this physics lecture was an internet classic and -in case you haven't watched it yet- an absolute must-see.

I definitely remember seeing some sort of pony business when I was little. Like really early 90's. Must have been reruns of the old show.

Yeah it all boils down to not being much different from anime fandoms are people that still watch spongebob.

From what I understand part of the good reception from all age groups and genders is an actual underlying plot and decent enough character development that people can get invested in their favorite pony.

I do in the event someone asks me, but I only ever saw the first episode and a handful of random clips from various internet sources such as imgur or other EVE players. And besides that my IRL bestie is a full-blown brony.

Flufflepuff is amazing btw hah

This. My 2-year old watches it and now and then I find myself watching it too after getting drawn in by the plot of that episode.

I chewed my little ponies legs when I was teething, can still remember the taste/smell. Then progressed to worm/mud eating competitions in the garden with the neighbours kids. Tbh I preferred the mud (crunchy) but at the time the worms were the prize. Still look at them with a mixture of lust/shame/disgust.

Actually the first season and at least some episodes of the second one were quite good.... the episodes certainly had enough pop culture references (I even recall a 2001 Space Odyssey reference, for example) that it was clear the target audience was NOT just little girls on whom this would get completely lost.
I believe this "switch and bait" if you want - a little girl show that was in its own way surpisingly mature - made the hype actually possible in the first place.

Of course Hasbro quickly but quietly pulled the plug on that: never publicy denouncing their more mature fandom but simultaneously removing anything that went beyond the most basic, expected "girly" stuff. Most fans eventually realized this; afaik only the most fanatical/delusional fanbase - and furries - didn“t eventually move one after the second season.

That said, MLP DID have at least some impact on Eve Online: I still remember that ponypic links were posted on the (old) Forum, there are Corporations like Ponywaffe (not to mention my own Corp Cool) and even Cannibal Kane jumped onto the Ponybandwagon for a short time.

We like quality productions. Honestly, MLP has better scripts than most adult shows (looking at you walking dead).
